Call of Duty: WWII is back on PC Game Pass, but it cannot be called definitively safe on Windows based on the public evidence. The game was taken offline in July 2025 after reports of a serious online-play vulnerability that appeared to allow remote interference with players’ PCs. It returned to the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass on August 27–28, 2025, but Activision has not publicly provided enough technical detail to independently verify the fix. [C002] [C003] [C004] [C005]

For the most conservative choice, play on Xbox or PlayStation. If you use Windows, updated offline campaign play has lower exposure than online multiplayer or Zombies.

Short answer: Call of Duty: WWII is available again on the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass, but its return is not the same thing as a public security certification. The Windows version was removed in July 2025 after reports of a serious online-play vulnerability that appeared capable of letting another player interfere with a victim’s PC. Activision later returned the game on August 27–28, 2025, which is reassuring evidence that the build was changed or remediated. However, as of the latest documented evidence reviewed here—August 12, 2026—Activision has not published a detailed advisory identifying the vulnerability, explaining the fix, or confirming that every online attack path has been closed. If security is your deciding factor, choose the Xbox or PlayStation version. On Windows, campaign play is the lower-exposure option. Treat online multiplayer and online Zombies more cautiously: the game’s return is a positive operational signal, but not independent proof that PC online play is definitively safe.

What happened to Call of Duty: WWII on PC Game Pass?

Xbox announced Call of Duty: WWII for Console and PC Game Pass on June 17, 2025, with availability scheduled for June 30. The game did launch on that date. Within days, reports began circulating about unusual and potentially malicious behavior during online PC play. [C001] [C002]

On July 5, 2025, the Call of Duty team said that the PC version had been taken offline while it investigated reports of an issue. Malwarebytes described the problem as appearing to be a remote-code-execution, or RCE, vulnerability and advised players to avoid the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass versions until Activision released a fix. [C002] [C003]

Player reports described command prompts appearing, computers being shut down, Notepad opening, wallpaper changes, and other forms of remote interference. Those reports are evidence of what players experienced or claimed to have experienced; they do not, by themselves, establish that every report had the same cause or that malware was installed in every case. Independent reporting nevertheless characterized the incident as a serious flaw in the affected Windows build. [C002] [C005]

Activision announced the game’s return on August 27, 2025, and reporting on August 28 confirmed that it was again available through the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass. The Windows version had therefore been unavailable for approximately 41 days. [C004]

Is the PC Game Pass version safe now?

There is not enough public documentation to answer “yes” with confidence. The return strongly suggests that Activision and Microsoft believed the build was ready to distribute again. A game normally would not be restored to the store and subscription service without some form of investigation, remediation, or build replacement. That is meaningful evidence in favor of improvement.

But the public record available for this assessment does not include a detailed Activision security bulletin stating:

  • which game build numbers were affected;
  • whether the issue affected every online mode or only particular matchmaking paths;
  • what technical change fixed it; or
  • that the relevant remote-code-execution path was independently verified as closed.

Activision’s support hub lists a known-issues page updated February 23, 2026, and a ports page updated February 3, 2026. Those dates show that the title still receives support maintenance, but an updated support page is not automatically a public security-remediation statement. [C006] [C007]

This distinction matters. Saying that the game is still hacked would go beyond the evidence. Saying that it is definitely safe would also go beyond the evidence. The most accurate conclusion is that Call of Duty: WWII returned after a serious PC security incident, but Activision’s public documentation does not provide enough technical detail for an outside reader to independently verify the fix.

Which versions and modes carry the most exposure?

Version or mode Practical assessment
Xbox or PlayStation The conservative choice for readers who want to minimize this specific Windows-PC risk. Contemporary reporting identified Windows PC players as the affected group, not console players. Console security models are also materially different from those of general-purpose Windows PCs. That does not mean every console risk is impossible; it means the reported PC client issue should not automatically be applied to consoles. [C002] [C003]
Windows PC campaign, played offline Lower exposure because it avoids the principal reported multiplayer attack surface. It is not a formal guarantee that every executable or installation state is safe, so describe it as lower risk rather than certified safe.
Windows PC online multiplayer Higher exposure because the game exchanges data with other players and servers. Do not treat the game’s return to Game Pass alone as proof that online play is risk-free.
Windows PC online Zombies Also higher exposure because it is an online, networked mode involving other players. The available public reports do not provide enough detail to establish whether Zombies was affected differently from competitive multiplayer.
Steam PC edition Do not assume that Steam is definitely safe or definitely affected. Reporting at the time distinguished the Microsoft Store/Game Pass build from Steam, while later SteamDB records showed subsequent depot changes. Neither fact is a complete, independently verified security assessment of every Steam build or every PC distribution. [C004] [C005] [C010]

What should you do before installing or launching it on Windows?

  1. Use the current official distribution. If you proceed, install the current Xbox/Microsoft Store version rather than relying on an old installer, backup, or unofficial download. Check that the listing identifies Activision Publishing as the publisher. The Xbox listing describes the Windows edition as playable on PC and handheld devices and includes Campaign, Multiplayer, and Co-Operative modes. [C006]
  2. Update Windows first. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install pending updates, and restart if Windows requests it.
  3. Update the game and Store components. In Microsoft Store, open Library and select Get updates. If you use the Xbox app, check its Library for a pending game update as well. Exact labels can change between app versions, so the important requirement is that the game has no pending update before you launch it.
  4. Update security definitions. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates. Keep trusted anti-malware for Windows gaming PCs active if you use a third-party product, but do not treat security software as a substitute for an Activision fix or as a guarantee against a game-client RCE.
  5. Start with campaign or another low-exposure test. If you are risk-sensitive, play campaign offline first and do not immediately join public multiplayer or Zombies sessions.
  6. Use a separate Windows account if practical. A standard, non-administrator Windows account limits what some malicious processes can do. It cannot make an unsafe game client safe, and it may not prevent all damage, but it reduces unnecessary privilege.
  7. Do not disable security controls to make the game launch. Avoid turning off antivirus, Windows Firewall, SmartScreen, or User Account Control merely to resolve a crash or compatibility problem. If the game requires an exception, understand exactly what it permits and remove the exception if you stop using the game.

Does Activision account security protect you from this problem?

Use a unique password for your Activision account and enable two-factor authentication where available. Activision documents account security and two-factor authentication separately from game-client troubleshooting. These measures can help prevent someone from taking over the account, but they do not patch a vulnerability in the Windows game client or stop a malicious player from exploiting networked software. [C008]

In other words, account protection is still worthwhile, but it addresses a different threat:

  • Two-factor authentication: helps protect account sign-in and account changes.
  • Windows and game updates: address software defects and security vulnerabilities.
  • Antivirus and endpoint protection: can detect or block some malicious activity, but cannot guarantee protection from an unknown or game-specific exploit.
  • Offline play: reduces exposure to other players and networked attack paths, but is not a security certification.

What to do if your PC behaved strangely after playing

The reported symptoms—such as an unexpected command prompt, forced shutdown, Notepad opening, or wallpaper changing—should be treated as suspicious, even though a symptom alone does not prove that the game caused an intrusion.

  1. Disconnect the PC from the network. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet. Do not continue playing online while investigating.
  2. Stop launching the game. Do not repeatedly reproduce the behavior to “test” whether it happens again.
  3. Run a current security scan. From Windows Security or another trusted, up-to-date security product, run a full scan. If the machine shows continuing suspicious behavior, use the security product’s recommended offline or recovery scan from a clean process.
  4. Change important passwords from a separate device. Prioritize email, banking, password-manager, Microsoft, Activision, and social accounts. Use unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
  5. Review account activity. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins, password-reset messages, purchases, linked accounts, or changes to recovery information.
  6. Preserve useful evidence. Note the date and time, take photographs or screenshots, record the game version if visible, and keep relevant security alerts. This can help a security professional or platform support team investigate.
  7. Escalate if the behavior persists. A local technician or incident-response professional may need to inspect the system. If you use the PC for sensitive work, do not assume that one quick scan proves it is clean.

This is general incident-response guidance. It does not mean that every player who saw an unusual pop-up had malware installed, nor does it identify the precise cause of any individual incident.

What is actually available through PC Game Pass?

As of August 12, 2026, the Xbox product listing identifies Call of Duty: WWII as a Windows PC title included with PC Game Pass-related subscriptions. The listing includes Campaign, Multiplayer, and Co-Operative modes and lists the Season Pass and Call of Duty Points as add-ons. Subscription availability, regional catalogues, and platform requirements can change, so check the current Xbox listing for your account and country before installing. [C006]

The same listing gives the Windows edition a December 16, 2024 release date. That appears to describe the Microsoft Store edition rather than the game’s original launch. Activision’s own game page identifies Call of Duty: WWII as a 2017 title developed by Sledgehammer Games for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The two dates are therefore not necessarily contradictory: one refers to the original game, while the other appears to refer to the Windows storefront release. [C006] [C009]

Should you install it?

Choose console if security is the priority

Xbox or PlayStation is the clearest conservative choice. The incident reports focused on the Windows PC version, and consoles do not expose the same general-purpose Windows environment. This recommendation is about reducing exposure to the reported PC client risk, not claiming that consoles are immune to cheating, account theft, or every possible online-security problem.

Use PC campaign if you want the lowest-risk Windows option

An updated official installation used primarily for offline campaign play avoids the main reported multiplayer interaction. That makes it a reasonable compromise for someone who already has PC Game Pass and wants to play the story. Keep the qualification in mind: “lower exposure” is more defensible than “safe.”

Wait or accept uncertainty for PC online play

If you are deciding whether to play public multiplayer or online Zombies on Windows, the honest answer is that the evidence remains incomplete. The game’s restoration is a good sign, and nothing in the available record proves that the exploit remains active. But without a detailed public remediation statement, a risk-averse player should either use console, stick to lower-exposure play, or wait for clearer vendor documentation.

Bottom line

Call of Duty: WWII is not known from the available evidence to be permanently compromised, and its return to PC Game Pass suggests that Activision and Microsoft addressed the incident. Nevertheless, the public record does not let readers independently confirm exactly what was fixed. For the safest practical choice, play on console. On PC, keep every component updated and favor offline campaign play; do not describe online multiplayer or Zombies as definitively safe solely because the game is back in the store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Call of Duty: WWII still on PC Game Pass?

Yes, Call of Duty: WWII returned to the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass on August 27–28, 2025. The Xbox listing covered by the latest research identifies it as a Windows PC title included with PC Game Pass-related subscriptions, although catalogues and subscription availability can vary by region and change over time. [C004] [C006]

Is the Call of Duty: WWII PC Game Pass version definitely safe now?

Not definitively. Its return suggests that Activision and Microsoft remediated the build or replaced it, but the available public documentation does not identify the vulnerability, affected builds, or technical fix. That is an evidence gap—not proof that the exploit remains active. [C004] [C005]

Are the Xbox and PlayStation versions safer than the PC version?

The reported incident concerned the Windows PC version. Console players were not identified as the affected group in the contemporary reporting, and consoles have a different application-security model. Console is therefore the more conservative choice for security-conscious players, though no platform should be described as immune to every online threat. [C002] [C003]

Is the PC campaign safe to play offline?

Offline campaign play avoids the principal reported multiplayer attack surface and is therefore lower exposure. It is not a formal guarantee that every installation or executable state is safe. Online multiplayer and online Zombies involve networked interaction and should be treated more cautiously. [C002] [C003]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the game opens a command prompt or changes my PC?

Disconnect the PC from the network, stop launching the game, run an up-to-date full security scan, change important credentials from a separate device, and review account activity. If suspicious behavior continues, seek professional technical help. These steps are general incident-response guidance, not proof that every reported symptom was caused by malware.

Does Activision two-factor authentication protect against the reported PC exploit?

Two-factor authentication helps protect your Activision account from unauthorized sign-ins, but it does not patch or block a vulnerability in the game client. Use it alongside Windows, game, and security-software updates. [C008]

The Bottom Line

Verdict: Call of Duty: WWII is back on PC Game Pass, but “returned” is not the same as “publicly verified safe.” Console is the conservative option; updated offline PC campaign play has lower exposure; Windows online multiplayer and Zombies still warrant caution until Activision publishes clearer technical confirmation of the fix.
