melonDS is the best DS emulator for most desktop users. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and offers the strongest general combination of open-source development, cross-platform support, and current project activity. Android users should look first at DraStic for mobile controls and tuning, while iPhone and iPad users will usually have the easiest setup with Delta.

For most desktop users, melonDS is the best DS emulator. It is open source, runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and has the clearest current cross-platform development direction. On Android, DraStic is the better convenience-focused choice, while Delta is the simplest option for iPhone and iPad. iOS users who want a broader multi-system emulator or a choice of DS cores should also consider Provenance.

There is no emulator that is universally best for every Nintendo DS game, computer, or control scheme. Compatibility can vary with the title, operating system, emulator build, graphics backend, and settings. The recommendations below are therefore platform-based defaults—not a guarantee that every game will run perfectly.

1. melonDS: best overall DS emulator for desktop

melonDS is the best default recommendation for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The project describes itself as an open-source Nintendo DS emulator, and its official download page provides builds for those desktop platforms as well as Android. Its GPL-3.0 licensing and publicly visible development make it a good fit for users who value transparency and cross-platform consistency.

melonDS is also a sensible choice if you may move between desktop and mobile devices. Its development direction includes work on DSi emulation, networking, rendering, and separate-window display. Those features should not be confused with a promise that every DSi function or online mode is complete: the project lists some of this work as ongoing, and ordinary DS compatibility remains the more relevant consideration for most users.

Firmware requirements in melonDS

The most important setup distinction is between booting a game directly and booting through the original DS firmware. According to the project’s documentation, firmware boot requires BIOS and firmware dumps from an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite. Firmware from a DSi or 3DS is not interchangeable for this purpose.

If you only want to start a compatible game directly, the requirements can differ from a full firmware boot. Follow the setup instructions for the specific melonDS build rather than downloading a random BIOS package from the web. Use game images and firmware dumps obtained through lawful personal dumping or another legally authorized source; the emulator project does not make third-party ROM or BIOS downloads legal.

Who should choose melonDS?

  • Desktop users who want one open-source recommendation across operating systems.
  • Players who prefer a current, actively visible project rather than relying only on an older stable release.
  • Users who want to investigate DSi, rendering, networking, or multi-window development as those areas evolve.

Choose another emulator if your priority is specifically Android-focused controls, a simpler iPhone setup, or DeSmuME’s established desktop tools.

2. DraStic: best Android-first DS emulator

DraStic is the practical Android recommendation for users who care more about a polished mobile experience and device-specific tuning than open-source availability. The creator’s settings documentation describes a broad set of Android-oriented features, including configurable frame skipping, fast-forward, external-display modes, audio and microphone controls, customizable virtual controls, real-time-clock settings, save-state behavior, compressed-game handling, and performance options.

That range matters on a phone. DS games use two screens and sometimes expect a microphone, touch input, or precise button placement. DraStic gives Android users more ways to arrange the screens and virtual gamepad for a particular device. Frame skipping and other performance controls can also be useful on older hardware, although it would be inaccurate to promise that DraStic is always faster than every alternative without testing the specific phone, game, and settings combination.

The creator-maintained changelog records Android storage improvements, Chromebook fixes, game-database updates, and game-specific fixes. However, the version information available there is not as transparent or visibly current as melonDS’s ongoing project activity. Treat DraStic as the Android convenience choice, and verify its current availability and compatibility for your particular Android release before committing to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose DraStic if you want:

  • A control layout designed around touchscreens rather than a desktop mouse and keyboard.
  • Fast-forward, save states, frame-skipping, and other quick-play features.
  • Options for external displays, audio, microphone behavior, real-time-clock settings, and compressed game files.
  • Per-device tuning on an older phone, Chromebook, or unusual Android form factor.

Choose melonDS on Android instead if open-source software and consistency with the desktop project matter more than the breadth of Android-specific controls. The official melonDS download page lists Android, but the Android listing identified in the research is an unofficial port. Do not assume that every Android build has exactly the same features, interface, or performance as the desktop version; check the exact build or store listing.

3. Delta: easiest DS emulator experience on iPhone and iPad

Delta is the simplest recommendation for most iPhone and iPad owners. Its official project documentation says it runs on non-jailbroken iOS devices, supports Nintendo DS, and uses melonDS as its DS emulation core. Delta also supports PS4, PS5, Xbox, and MFi controllers, with customizable button mappings.

That makes Delta an approachable all-in-one frontend rather than a specialist DS-only tool. It is a strong choice when you want a native iOS interface and do not want to compare separate DS emulator cores. It does not, however, guarantee perfect compatibility for every title. As with desktop emulators, behavior can change with the game, iOS version, Delta build, and graphics or control settings.

If touch controls are uncomfortable for longer sessions, an optional controller supported by Delta can provide physical buttons. A controller is not required for DS emulation, and it will not solve game-specific compatibility problems.

4. Provenance: the flexible iOS alternative

Provenance is worth considering when Nintendo DS is only one part of a larger retro library. Its official documentation lists both DeSmuME and melonDS under Nintendo DS support. It also describes App Store installation, ROM importing, and optional BIOS-file setup.

The ability to select between two DS cores is Provenance’s main advantage over a simpler single-core experience. It gives an experienced user another option when a particular game behaves differently between cores. The trade-off is complexity: if you only want to play DS games on an iPhone or iPad, Delta is likely the more straightforward starting point.

As always, use legally obtained game images and any required BIOS files. Core selection is a troubleshooting option, not evidence that either emulator will run every game flawlessly.

5. DeSmuME: best alternative for established desktop tooling

DeSmuME remains a credible desktop alternative and should not be dismissed simply because melonDS is the broader default recommendation. Its official download page identifies version 0.9.13 as the latest stable release and separately provides Windows nightly builds. The project’s release information also documents high-resolution 3D rendering and improvements to the Cocoa frontend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DeSmuME may be the better fit for someone who already knows its interface, prefers its desktop-oriented tools, or specifically wants to experiment with high-resolution 3D rendering. Its GitHub repository shows ongoing commits and issue activity, but that should be stated separately from its stable-release status: an active repository does not mean that a new stable version has recently replaced 0.9.13.

Choose DeSmuME when its tooling or rendering options are more important to you than having the newest-looking cross-platform development line. Start with the stable build unless you specifically need a fix or feature from a Windows nightly, and remember that nightly software can be less predictable.

What you need before installing any DS emulator

  1. A compatible device. Use a current build intended for your operating system or the exact mobile port you plan to install.
  2. Your own game images or another authorized source. Do not use third-party ROM download sites as a default source.
  3. Firmware or BIOS files when the emulator or boot mode requires them. Dump these from hardware you own where lawful, and follow the selected emulator’s documentation.
  4. A control plan. Touch controls work, but a keyboard, gamepad, or compatible Bluetooth controller can be more comfortable for long sessions. Physical controls remain optional.
  5. Realistic expectations. Test the specific game rather than assuming that a general emulator ranking predicts its behavior.

Quick troubleshooting guide

The emulator reports missing BIOS or firmware

Check whether you selected firmware boot or direct game boot. In melonDS, a firmware boot requires dumps from an original DS or DS Lite, and a DSi or 3DS firmware dump is not a substitute for that documented requirement. In Provenance, consult its setup documentation for the optional BIOS-file configuration. Do not “fix” the error by downloading an unverified BIOS archive.

The game runs slowly or audio crackles

First test without enhancements such as high-resolution rendering, then check the emulator’s frame-skip or performance options. DraStic documents frame skipping and several device-oriented performance settings; the right setting depends on the phone, game, and desired visual quality. On desktop, compare the official build for your operating system before assuming the game itself is incompatible.

The two screens or controls are awkward

Use the emulator’s display-layout and input-mapping options. This is a particular reason to favor DraStic on Android: its documentation covers customizable virtual controls and display handling. Delta supports customizable controller mappings and compatible external controllers on iOS. On desktop, a physical gamepad or keyboard layout may be preferable to mouse-only input.

A title behaves differently between emulators

Record the emulator name, exact build, operating system, graphics settings, firmware mode, and game version. Then try the other credible core rather than changing several variables at once. Provenance’s documented choice between DeSmuME and melonDS is useful for this kind of comparison. A different result does not establish that one emulator is universally superior.

Final recommendations

  • Windows, macOS, or Linux: start with melonDS.
  • Android: choose DraStic for mature mobile controls and tuning; choose melonDS if open source and cross-platform consistency are the priority.
  • iPhone or iPad: start with Delta for the simplest native experience.
  • iOS or tvOS power users: try Provenance if you want multiple systems or both DeSmuME and melonDS available.
  • Desktop users seeking established tools or high-resolution 3D: keep DeSmuME in consideration, while distinguishing its older stable release from its newer nightly builds.
