callbuttons.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a game DLL or Visual C++ Redistributable file. When it is missing or will not load, repair Windows’ component store and protected system files instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
CallButtons.dll is associated with the Windows Runtime CallButtonsServer.dll, described in public file metadata as the Windows Runtime CallButtonsServer DLL. It belongs to Windows’ Microsoft-Windows-Audio-CallControl component, including the 32-bit WOW64 package on 64-bit installations. Microsoft Q&A repair logs show SFC identifying this component when copies of the file are missing.

On a typical 64-bit Windows installation:
- The native 64-bit copy is commonly
C:WindowsSystem32CallButtons.dll. - The 32-bit copy is commonly
C:WindowsSysWOW64CallButtons.dll.
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries, while System32 contains native 64-bit binaries. Microsoft explains this redirection behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

There is no reliable evidence that this DLL belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a game, or a device-driver package. An installer such as OneDrive may reveal the problem during startup, but that does not mean OneDrive owns the file. The underlying fault can be damaged Windows servicing data.
Causes matched to the symptom
| Symptom | Most likely meaning | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because callbuttons.dll is missing” | Windows cannot find the required protected component | Run Windows Update, then DISM and SFC |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because callbuttons.dll was not found” | The expected copy is absent or the application requested the wrong architecture | Check both Windows folders and repair Windows |
| “Error loading callbuttons.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The DLL itself or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Repair the component store and inspect the application event |
| “callbuttons.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | The file may be corrupted, mismatched, or damaged during servicing | Do not replace it manually; run DISM followed by SFC |
| The error appears while installing OneDrive or another unrelated program | That program touched a damaged Windows component | Repair Windows rather than repeatedly reinstalling the application |
| Antivirus reports or removes the file | A quarantine event or false positive may have removed a legitimate system file | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
The exact wording can differ between Windows versions and applications.
Fix callbuttons.dll with Windows Update
Windows servicing can restore the missing component automatically, particularly when the problem followed an interrupted or pending update.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Try the affected program again.
Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ covers the update process.
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, Windows may have been left in an incomplete servicing state. Restart first, then run the repair commands below. If the issue remains tied to that update, uninstalling the latest quality update or using System Restore may be appropriate.
Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store as the source for replacing damaged protected files. Running SFC first can leave it without a trustworthy copy of CallButtons.dll, so use this order.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. A successful completion indicates that the Windows image was repaired or did not require repair.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the program that displayed the error.
A useful result is Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the result says no integrity violations were found, the problem may involve a dependency, an application-specific failure, or a file that was quarantined separately.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, do not copy a random DLL into System32. Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. Relevant details are recorded in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the supported repair sequence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store changed is a poor way to troubleshoot this fault. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the Microsoft repair path.
Use a matching repair source if Windows Update is broken
If DISM cannot obtain source files, Microsoft documents specifying a genuine Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a matching Windows installation source. The source must correspond to the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not use a random folder from another computer.
See Microsoft’s DISM repair documentation before using this advanced method.

Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
CallButtons.dll, Windows system files, or the application that reported the error. - Expand an entry to view its location and detection details.
Restore a quarantined item only when its location and Microsoft signature clearly identify it as the genuine Windows component. If the entry points to a suspicious user-writable folder, leave it quarantined and run a full or offline scan instead.
Microsoft describes these entries in its Protection History documentation. After restoring a legitimate file, run DISM and SFC so Windows can verify the component.
Check the Windows architecture and expected path
To identify whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit:
- Open Start.
- Go to Settings > System > About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
On 64-bit Windows, check these locations in File Explorer:
C:WindowsSystem32CallButtons.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64CallButtons.dll
Do not assume that seeing one copy proves the other is unnecessary. A 64-bit process normally loads the native copy, while a 32-bit application uses the WOW64 copy.
If only a 32-bit application fails, note the exact executable that displays the message. If only a 64-bit application fails, the native component may be damaged. In either case, Windows servicing repair is safer than manually moving files between the folders.

Check drivers, but do not treat them as the owner of this DLL
CallButtons.dll is not verified as a driver file, so driver replacement is not the main fix. Still, a damaged audio stack or a recent device change can produce related application failures and is worth checking after DISM and SFC.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also check Audio inputs and outputs and System devices for warning icons. Do not uninstall a working device merely because CallButtons.dll is missing.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or a proper Windows repair.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It registers libraries that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore a missing Windows component or repair the component store.
Running:
regsvr32 CallButtons.dll
may produce an entry-point error, and a successful registration would not prove that the Windows file is healthy. Microsoft documents the command’s intended scope in its regsvr32 reference.
Do not use regsvr32 for CallButtons.dll unless Microsoft or the software vendor specifically documents registration for the exact build.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy downloading the DLL is unsafe
Avoid isolated copies from random DLL download pages. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, dependencies, or embedded malware, and placing it next to an executable may hide the real component-store problem.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- DISM using Windows’ own repair source
- SFC
- A Windows repair reinstall
- Microsoft installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture
Do not copy the file from another PC unless advanced recovery instructions identify the exact damaged protected file and the source is an exact matching Windows build.
If DISM and SFC still cannot repair it
Use these recovery options in order.
Try System Restore
If the problem started after an update, driver installation, or system change:
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers and applications.
Perform a Windows repair reinstall
A repair reinstall reinstalls Windows while preserving supported personal files and applications, depending on the method and edition. Use official Microsoft installation media that matches the current Windows installation. Back up important data first.
This is appropriate when the component store remains corrupted, Windows Update cannot supply matching files, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective.
Reset Windows only as a last resort
Use Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC only after backing up personal files and confirming that less destructive recovery methods failed. Read the removal choices carefully. A reset can remove applications and settings.
FAQ
Is callbuttons.dll malware?
The file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is the expected system file and carries the appropriate Microsoft identity. A copy in an unusual application folder, a user profile directory, or a temporary folder deserves antivirus investigation.
Is this a Visual C++ error?
No verified evidence connects CallButtons.dll to Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. Do not install those packages merely because a generic DLL message recommends them.
Why does OneDrive sometimes expose the error?
An installer can trigger Windows code paths that reveal an existing damaged component. That does not prove OneDrive owns CallButtons.dll; repair Windows first.
Should I enable a Windows Feature?
There is no verified Windows Feature that needs to be enabled for this DLL. Avoid randomly enabling legacy components. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
What does “specified module could not be found” really mean?
It can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean a dependency required by that DLL is missing. Repair Windows first, then check the affected application and Event Viewer if the message continues.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I use System32 or SysWOW64?
Use neither as a manual download destination. Windows servicing places the correct architecture in the correct location. On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit components normally use System32, while 32-bit components use SysWOW64.
When should I reinstall the affected application?
Only after Windows repairs succeed and the application still fails. If the application itself is damaged, reinstall it from its official installer, but reinstalling it cannot repair a corrupted Windows component store.
