The 60-second answer
profext.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, normally stored in %windir%System32. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, game file, or standalone program. Its exported functions are associated with Windows profiles, AppContainer profiles, profile directories, and related policy operations.
Do not download profext.dll from a DLL website, copy a random version into System32, or run regsvr32 against it. First install pending Windows updates, restart, and run these commands from an administrator Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence for repairing damaged Windows components. If the error names an application, also repair that application from its official installer.
What causes a profext.dll error
The message alone does not prove that the named file is missing. Common possibilities include:

A documented Microsoft Q&A report involved LocalBridge.exe - Bad Image, the path C:WindowsSYSTEM32profext.dll, and status 0xc0000428. That report does not establish that every similar error is caused by Office, antivirus, or the same underlying fault.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing can replace or repair protected system files. Start here before replacing anything manually.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Download and install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not assume the update is the only cause. A damaged component store or interrupted servicing operation can leave Windows files inconsistent. Continue with DISM and SFC below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Run both commands separately, in this order. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC uses that repaired store to check protected system files.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- Then enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application that reported
profext.dll.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC reports that it did not find any integrity violations, the problem may be a dependency, an app-local copy, or a damaged application rather than the Windows copy.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them, restart and run the same DISM and SFC sequence once more. Do not download a replacement DLL to bypass the result.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition behind the failure and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair remains the appropriate first step.

Use another DISM repair source
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft supports specifying a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary folder or a different Windows build.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false detection, although a warning should never be dismissed automatically.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
profext.dll. - Check the recorded path and detection details.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:

- The event is clearly a false detection or quarantine event.
- The file has a credible Microsoft signature.
- You have checked that the device is not infected.
If the file was found in a game folder, a download directory, a temporary folder, or beside an unfamiliar executable, do not restore it merely because the filename matches. Run a full scan instead. Microsoft warns that allowing a malicious file can expose the device.
After restoring a credible Windows copy, run DISM and SFC, then restart.
Fix 4: Confirm the architecture and file location
On 64-bit Windows, %windir%System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory. Windows uses WOW64 redirection so that 32-bit applications can access 32-bit system components through %windir%SysWOW64. The directory names are confusing, but do not swap files between them manually.
To check the locations:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Search for
profext.dll. - Repeat with:
%windir%SysWOW64
A missing file in one folder does not tell you to copy the file from the other folder. The required architecture depends on the Windows installation and the process loading the DLL.

Public records show that profext.dll versions vary by Windows build and architecture. Observed records include 32-bit Windows 8 and Windows 10-era files, along with 64-bit Windows 10- and Windows 11-era files. Do not choose the highest version number from an online listing. A system DLL must match the installed Windows build and servicing state.
To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
If an application-specific error occurs only in a 32-bit or 64-bit program, repair Windows first, then repair that application. Do not solve an architecture problem by downloading a similarly named DLL.
Fix 5: Repair the application named in the error
profext.dll belongs to Windows, but the process reporting the failure may be an application that triggered the load. If the message names LocalBridge.exe, Office, a Store app, or another program, repair that program after repairing Windows.
For a typical Windows app:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected app.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the app.
For Office:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Online Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart when finished.
If a copy of profext.dll exists beside an application executable, that copy may take precedence over the Windows copy. Do not replace it with a downloaded file. Use the application’s official installer, repair option, or uninstall and reinstall process.

A normal profext.dll error is not automatically a graphics, audio, chipset, or storage driver problem. Device Manager and Windows Features are not general repairs for this DLL.
Use Device Manager only if the failure began with a hardware, storage, display, or device-service problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, obtain a matching driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not install a driver package simply because a search result mentions profext.dll.
Manually hunting through driver versions is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the affected devices, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or the application that actually fails.
Fix 7: Use recovery tools if repair fails
If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and application repair do not resolve the error, escalate without copying the DLL manually.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
System Restore
Use System Restore if the failure began after a recent software installation, update, or configuration change.

- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
- Restart and test the affected program.
Remove a problematic update
If Windows will not boot normally or an update is strongly associated with the failure, use Windows Recovery Environment:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Choose Advanced startup and select Restart now.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Uninstall Updates.
- Choose the relevant update type.
If these options fail, Microsoft recovery media or a repair installation may be necessary. Back up important files before using Reset or installation media.
Do not register or manually download profext.dll
regsvr32 is not an appropriate fix for profext.dll. That command calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point, and published export data for profext.dll does not show that export. Registering it will not repair a missing Windows component.
Avoid these actions:
- Downloading the file from a random DLL website.
- Choosing a version because its number is higher.
- Copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit directory, or the reverse.
- Copying the file from another computer without matching the Windows build.
- Replacing a file in an application folder with an online copy.
- Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages merely because a search result associates them with the filename.
Microsoft’s Visual C++ packages, including vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe, are for the Visual C++ runtime and are unrelated to this Windows system DLL.

For most readers, DISM, SFC, a repair reinstall, or official application repair is safer.
FAQ
Is profext.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows system DLL. A file with the same name in an unexpected directory, without a credible Microsoft signature, or associated with suspicious activity may not be genuine.
Is profext.dll part of Office or Visual C++?
No. It is a Windows component. Office or LocalBridge.exe may report an error while Windows is trying to load it, but that does not make Office the owner of the DLL.
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by profext.dll. The message can identify the first module in the loading chain rather than the actual missing dependency.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as a repair for profext.dll. Install a runtime only when a specific application independently requires it and Microsoft documentation identifies that requirement.
Should I use Windows Features or Device Manager?
Not for an ordinary profext.dll error. Use Windows Features only when the error specifically concerns an optional Windows feature, and use Device Manager only when the evidence points to a hardware or driver problem.
What if SFC and DISM cannot repair the file?
Retry after restarting, use a matching DISM repair source, and then consider Windows 11’s repair reinstall, System Restore, update removal, or installation media. Do not substitute an arbitrary downloaded DLL.
