Yes—an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite can generally play American Nintendo DS game cards. A European DSi or DSi XL also plays most older DS cards, but DSi-exclusive cards are region-locked. Check both the handheld model and the card type before buying.

Nintendo’s international compatibility guidance distinguishes older DS/DS Lite software from DSi-exclusive cards. It states: “Older Nintendo DS and DS Lite software is region-free, so you can play most of that software on a Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL from any region.” The same page says DSi-exclusive cards are region-locked. Nintendo does not identify an individual speaker or publication date on the page.

How to check before buying a cartridge
- Identify the handheld. Check the model marking on the console or its packaging. Confirm whether it is an original DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL; “DS” alone does not establish which compatibility rules apply.
- Identify the card. Find out whether it is an older, standard DS game card or a DSi-exclusive title. On a DSi or DSi XL, this distinction matters: most older DS cards are region-free, while DSi-exclusive cards are not.
- Confirm the specific game and system. Do not treat the general rule as a promise about every cartridge. If the listing does not make the card type clear, check with the seller or consult the game’s packaging and official compatibility information before purchase.
DSiWare is a separate case
Physical, older DS game cards being region-free does not make DSiWare cross-region. DSi Shop access and downloads are tied to the region for which the DSi was manufactured. A US-region download should not be assumed to work on a European DSi or to be available through its regional shop.
If you mean a Nintendo 3DS
A 3DS-family system is not the same as a DS or DSi, so check its separate compatibility rules. Nintendo UK says most DS games play on 3DS-family systems, except games that use the Game Boy Advance slot. It also warns that some DSi games bought outside the PAL region may not work on PAL 3DS hardware. See Nintendo UK’s DS-on-3DS compatibility guidance before using a US card on a European 3DS.
