Yes, but only unofficially and with limits. PS5SX2, a community-made PCSX2 port for jailbroken PS5 consoles, is reported to play original PS2 game discs released on DVD and render at up to 6× native resolution. It does not support PS2 CD releases, and this is not a standard PS5 feature or Sony-supported backward compatibility.
What PS5SX2 does—and what “6× resolution” means
PS5SX2 is a native port of the PCSX2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 consoles. Its developer says it uses PS5 CPU recompilers and a modified Vulkan rendering layer called ps5vk. The project describes upscaling as high as 6× native resolution, with 4K output. Those are developer-stated capabilities, not a promise that every game will run at 6× or at full speed. The multiplier refers to rendering resolution—not frame rate. It does not mean games run six times faster, nor that every title produces a particular output resolution. Performance and compatibility vary by game; the project documentation distinguishes resolution settings from full-speed performance.

Reporting by Tom’s Hardware on October 10, 2026 says PS5SX2 can read PS2 games released on DVD but not those released on CD. The report describes support for the PS5’s internal optical drive and external USB optical drives. This is a reported limitation, not evidence that every DVD game or every console-and-drive setup works.

DVD playback and PS2 game playback are separate capabilities. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists supported optical formats but states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That applies to standard PS5 functionality; PS5SX2 relies on unofficial homebrew software on a jailbroken system. What setup requires
This is not a plug-and-play option for an ordinary PS5. The project’s requirements include a jailbroken console and additional software components, along with files the user must supply. The developer says PS5SX2 does not include BIOS files, games, or keys. Consult the project’s current documentation for changing firmware requirements and instructions; reported past testing is not a guarantee that a particular console can be jailbroken or will work today.

The project says development took place on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40 and that testers had used other PS5 models, including a Slim, on firmware versions from 6.02 to 12.70. These are project-reported development and tester details, not a current jailbreak compatibility list. PS5SX2 project documentation
Discs, game images, and other reported features
Alongside physical discs, the project lists support for ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO game image formats. Its documentation also lists save states, memory cards, widescreen and 60 FPS patches, texture packs, online play, and phone-based settings. These are developer-described features; the available reporting does not independently verify performance or compatibility for every feature or game.

The PS5 Homebrew Store listed version vk-285-162 as updated October 11, 2026, with notes about disc-copy progress and disc auto-play behavior. That is a third-party catalog entry; the project repository is the primary source for its requirements and declared capabilities. PS5 Homebrew Store

The developer describes PS5SX2 as a passion project without a company or release schedule and says work toward broader PS2-library compatibility is ongoing. Do not assume the full PS2 catalog works, or that a particular disc will boot smoothly at a chosen resolution. There are no independent performance benchmarks in the cited coverage that establish universal results.

Tom’s Hardware also quoted developer Sword saying “Yes, it’s coming with it :).” in response to a question about PS3 disc support arriving with a planned RPCS3 port. That comment describes future work, not a released PS3-disc feature. Tom’s Hardware
