In Bedrock Edition, some strongholds do not have an End portal. In Java Edition, Minecraft says every stronghold has one. So if you cannot find a portal room, check your edition and explore the structure fully before deciding it is missing.
How the answer differs by edition
| Edition | Can a stronghold lack an End portal? |
|---|---|
| Java Edition | No, according to Minecraft’s official 2021 statement: every stronghold has an End portal. |
| Bedrock Edition | Yes. Minecraft says only some strongholds have an End portal; it does not give a percentage. |
The distinction is about the portal room within the stronghold, not whether the structure exists. Minecraft Help describes a stronghold as an underground system of Overworld tunnels and rooms where players can find a portal to the End. Minecraft Help’s stronghold definition.
The edition comparison comes from Duncan Geere’s official Minecraft article, published December 2, 2021: Block of the Week: End Portal Frame. It does not establish a current probability for a portal-less Bedrock stronghold, so claims that it happens at a particular rate are not supported by that source.
What to do if you cannot find the portal room
Check your edition first
Confirm whether the world is Java or Bedrock. In Bedrock, a portal-less stronghold is possible. In Java, the official statement is that every stronghold has a portal, so a room you have not located is more likely than a structure generated without one—though the cited article does not discuss unusual legacy or upgraded-world cases.

Search the structure before moving on
Follow the stronghold’s branches and inspect its rooms rather than treating the first corridor or dead end as the whole structure. A community-maintained stronghold tutorial also advises searching the stronghold for the portal room: Minecraft Wiki: Stronghold.
If you are in Bedrock and find no portal
After searching the rooms and branches, you can use Eyes of Ender to locate another stronghold. Minecraft’s 2021 article states that every world contains 128 strongholds. Treat that as a dated statement from the article, not as a freshly verified guarantee for every current version or world-generation context.

Do not confuse portal generation with portal activation
Minecraft’s 2021 article says each End portal frame block has a 10% chance to generate with an Eye of Ender already in it. That figure describes an individual frame block and is not the chance that a stronghold contains a portal room. The same article says End portal frames cannot be destroyed or created in Survival mode; it does not present crafting or placing frames as a Survival workaround for a missing room.
