GameStop told GameSpot the incident was limited to that store and that affected customers were swiftly given replacements. The report does not establish a wider packaging defect or an ongoing risk at other retailers—but it is sensible to inspect a new console before you leave the store or discard its packaging.
What happened at the Staten Island GameStop?
In a June 6, 2025 report, GameSpot described customers finding puncture holes in newly purchased Switch 2 screens after receipts were stapled to the boxes at a GameStop in Staten Island. In an update, GameSpot quoted GameStop as saying the incident was confined to one store, affected a “very small fraction” of customers, and those customers were “swiftly given replacements.”
“Very small fraction” is a qualitative description, not a published count. The report does not say how many consoles were affected, establish that the same thing happened elsewhere, or show that Switch 2 packaging has a general defect. The incident concerned the handling of boxes at that particular store. Nintendo’s general warning that sharp objects or pressure can damage the screen is consistent with the reported mechanism, but does not establish a packaging problem across retail stock. How should you inspect a new Switch 2?
Check the console’s display for a puncture, crack, scratch, or other visible damage as soon as you can after opening it. If you notice damage, keep the receipt and packaging, take clear photos, and contact the retailer promptly about the purchase. If the console is physically damaged, Nintendo’s US support page directs owners to request service through its online process; retailer replacement handling and Nintendo service are separate routes, so check with the seller as well as Nintendo when appropriate. What does Nintendo say about protecting the screen?
Nintendo’s Switch 2 health and safety guidance states: “The screen may be damaged by sharp objects or pressure. Take care to protect the display from scratches or stains.” It also says: “Do not peel off the antiscattering adhesive film from the screen of the console.” Leave that factory film in place. Is a screen protector worth considering?
A Nintendo Switch 2-compatible screen protector is an optional way to add everyday surface protection. Nintendo’s official carrying-case and screen-protector manual includes instructions for aligning the protector to the touch screen. Neither that manual nor the available incident report establishes that an added protector would stop a staple driven through the box from reaching the display. What if the screen is already damaged?
For a physically damaged console in the United States, use Nintendo’s physical-damage support page to start a service request. Nintendo UK’s guidance says screen spots or scratches resulting from an accident require repair-centre service; where the fault is not a manufacturing defect, the repair is not covered by warranty and the customer is told the cost before being charged.
