Not by itself. In the United States, renewing a federal registration is a routine way to keep an existing trademark active, and the owner generally has to show continued use. The filing is about preserving trademark rights—not announcing a game project.
What a U.S. trademark renewal actually means
A federal trademark registration does not stay active indefinitely without maintenance. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) requires owners to submit filings on a schedule and generally demonstrate that they are still using the mark in commerce for the goods or services covered by the registration. The USPTO puts the requirement plainly: “You must use your trademark in commerce.” (USPTO guidance on keeping a registration alive.)

These are the USPTO’s stated maintenance intervals as accessed in 2026; special circumstances or registration types can affect a particular record. A Section 9 application renews the existing registration. The associated use declaration concerns the mark and the listed goods or services, or provides information about claimed excusable nonuse (USPTO maintenance schedule; Post-Registration FAQs).

Why the filing does not confirm a remake or sequel
A maintenance renewal is not a development announcement. Its stated purpose is to preserve an existing registration, and its required evidence concerns use of the mark—not whether a publisher has approved a new game, begun production, set a release window, or selected a remake over a sequel.
USPTO guidance describes specimens such as tags or labels affixed to goods and advertisements for services as examples of evidence of use. Such materials help support the registration; they do not establish that a new installment is in development (USPTO definitions for maintaining a registration).

A renewal could happen while a publisher is planning a future game, but the filing alone cannot show that. There is no reliable industry-wide statistic establishing how often renewals are followed by remake or sequel announcements, so a predictive percentage—or a conclusion drawn from a handful of examples—would be misleading.
How to check a specific game trademark
If a renewal for a named franchise is circulating online, treat it as one piece of rights-record information, not confirmation of a project. Check the official registration record and the underlying filing for the details that establish what happened:

- Owner: Confirm which person or company owns the registration. A familiar game title does not automatically mean the current publisher filed it.
- Goods and services: Read the actual listed categories. They describe the scope of the registration, not a promised product roadmap.
- Filing and status: Check the filing date, filing basis, and whether the USPTO accepted the submission. A submitted filing and an accepted filing are not the same status.
- Separate project evidence: Look for a direct announcement from the rights holder or a concrete product listing attributable to it. Distinguish an announced project from one available for preorder or release.
Only separate corroboration can support a claim that a new game is coming. If that evidence exists, identify precisely what it establishes: a remake, remaster, re-release, sequel, or licensing arrangement are different possibilities, and a trademark renewal does not distinguish among them.

A renewal can indicate that someone sought to maintain an existing U.S. registration, subject to the record’s status and acceptance. It cannot, standing alone, establish that a remake or sequel has been approved or is on the way. These procedures describe U.S. federal registrations; other countries have their own trademark systems and maintenance rules, so check the relevant jurisdiction’s official register for marks filed outside the United States.
