Return and warranty repair are different remedies
A return is handled by the seller and may result in a refund under that seller’s policy or applicable law. Warranty service is a claim to the manufacturer for a covered defect; under Sony’s US PS5 limited hardware warranty, Sony’s stated remedy is repair or replacement at its option, not a general right to a refund. A policy for purchases made directly from PlayStation does not automatically apply to a used console bought from a different retailer, marketplace seller, or private individual.

What Sony’s guidance says in the US and UK
United States
Sony’s US PS5 limited hardware warranty provides a one-year period from the original purchase date, applies to the original purchaser, and requires valid proof of that original purchase to obtain service. For a covered material defect, Sony may repair the console or replace it with a factory-recertified product under the warranty terms. The document lists exclusions, including misuse, unauthorized opening or service, and items clearly sold “as is” or with faults. United Kingdom
Sony’s UK buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty and notes that this does not affect statutory rights under applicable law. Sony’s UK certified refurbished console page states a 12-month manufacturer warranty for its certified refurbished consoles and warns that they may have minor cosmetic imperfections. The US and UK terms are examples, not a worldwide rule. Warranty coverage and consumer rights vary by region. Check the warranty for the country where the console was originally sold and the law that applies to your purchase.

How to check whether you can return this particular console
- Identify the seller. Check the receipt and listing to establish whether you bought from PlayStation Direct, another retailer, a marketplace seller, or a private seller.
- Read that seller’s return terms. Confirm the deadline, eligible condition, required packaging, and any shipping costs. PlayStation Direct’s US return policy applies to purchases made from PlayStation Direct; Sony’s UK hardware refund page describes its own eligible hardware purchases, including a goodwill return period of 30 days from delivery. - Check local consumer rights. A seller’s policy may not be the only factor. Rights can depend on your country, the seller’s status, and the transaction; the cited Sony guidance does not determine your specific legal case.
- Contact the seller promptly if it is faulty. Keep the listing, receipt, messages, and any evidence of the fault, and follow the seller’s stated process before the applicable deadline.
How to check whether Sony will repair it under warranty
- Find the original dated receipt or invoice. Sony’s US warranty requires valid proof showing the original purchase date for warranty service. Without it, you may not be able to establish that the warranty period applies.
- Confirm the original country of sale. Warranty terms are regional, so provide PlayStation Support with the console’s region and serial number rather than assuming the policy in your current country governs.
- Ask PlayStation Support to verify eligibility before shipping. Explain that you bought the console secondhand and ask whether its warranty can be used for this unit. Sony’s third-party used-product guidance means eligibility should be confirmed, not presumed.
- Back up your data before service. Sony warns that service can change settings or result in data loss. Follow Support’s instructions for preparing the console.
What to check before buying a used PS5 Pro
Ask the seller for the information and checks that will matter if the console fails or cannot connect after purchase:
- The original dated retail receipt or invoice, plus the country where it was bought.
- The used seller’s return window and written terms for a fault or service/connectivity problem discovered after purchase.
- A video showing the console powers on, along with checks of its ports, buttons, internet and PlayStation service connectivity, and disc drive if applicable.
- Clear photos or an in-person inspection for damage, and confirmation that the serial number is present.
- Confirmation that the previous owner has deactivated the console.
- Seller feedback and a clear written record of the console’s condition and any faults.
