AWS Lightsail can host FFmpeg and send a live feed to YouTube, but whether it can sustain your particular 24/7 encode depends on the workload and instance. AWS describes Lightsail as burstable for common plans and recommends EC2 when video encoding needs consistently high CPU performance. Test your exact input, output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate before relying on a Lightsail plan around the clock; no single minimum plan is established for every FFmpeg job.
When Lightsail is—and is not—a good fit
The key distinction is between getting FFmpeg to run and sustaining the workload reliably. Forwarding or remuxing an already encoded feed may demand less CPU than continuously decoding, resizing, compositing or re-encoding video. That is an engineering distinction, not a capacity guarantee: test your actual command and media on the plan you intend to use.
AWS says Lightsail instances are designed for workloads whose CPU demand is not consistently high, such as web servers and developer environments. Its FAQ recommends EC2 for applications needing consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding. AWS also lists compute-optimized Lightsail plans as potentially useful for compute-intensive tasks such as encoding. That does not establish that a particular Lightsail plan will sustain a particular encode.
On burstable plans, CPU baseline and accrued burst capacity matter. AWS says sustained operation in the burstable zone eventually consumes available capacity. Its guidance says burst capacity accrues at 4.17% per hour for Lightsail plans except Linux/Unix plans at $380 and above and Windows plans at $570 and above. Those exceptions and the percentage describe burst-capacity accrual, not a promise of continuous CPU throughput. See the AWS Lightsail FAQ and Lightsail bundles documentation.

Choose the workload before the instance
Do not size a server by the phrase “FFmpeg stream” alone. First decide what FFmpeg will do and what YouTube will receive.
- Processing: Identify whether the job merely forwards/remuxes an existing encode or decodes and encodes video, and whether it resizes, composites or applies filters.
- Output: Specify codec, resolution, frame rate and target bitrate. Higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate re-encoding can increase sustained CPU demand.
- Audio and input: Record the audio codec and bitrate, source format, and whether the source is a local file, playlist or network feed.
- Resources: Match vCPU, memory and storage to the actual process, media and logs. Lightsail bundles have fixed vCPU, RAM, storage and transfer allowances; price alone is not a sizing method.
There is no evidence-based universal “smallest Lightsail plan” for an unspecified command. Run a representative test using the real media and output settings, then observe CPU use, memory, FFmpeg errors and YouTube stream health over time. If encoding keeps CPU demand consistently high, compare the workload with EC2 rather than assuming a burstable plan will sustain it.

Set FFmpeg output to YouTube’s ingest requirements
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Use the codec and settings supported by your chosen encoder and YouTube workflow; a bitrate recommendation is specific to codec, resolution and frame rate, not a universal target. These are YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendations, not measurements of what a given Lightsail instance can encode. Select an output that your server can sustain and your network can deliver. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate; for a server-hosted stream, check that the server’s outbound route can reliably carry the selected ingest rate. Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live safely
- Create or select the live stream: In YouTube Live Control Room, set up or select the broadcast and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Configure the encoder: Enter the URL and key in FFmpeg’s output configuration, choosing RTMPS when available and matching the video, audio, bitrate and keyframe settings to YouTube’s guidance.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Start privately or unlisted for a test: Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, the audio and motion are representative, and the stream-health indicators remain acceptable before using the setup for a public broadcast.
This is the connection workflow, not a universal FFmpeg command: input formats, filters, codecs and stream URLs vary. Avoid copying a command that assumes a different source or exposes a real key.
Estimate transfer and check regional plan terms
A continuous stream transfers substantial data. A useful estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 = approximate gigabytes per hour, using decimal gigabytes and assuming the stream runs continuously. Multiply by the planned hours to estimate outbound data before protocol overhead and other traffic. For example, a 10 Mbps feed is approximately 4.5 GB per hour by this calculation, or about 3,240 GB over 30 days at 24 hours per day.

That estimate is not a Lightsail bill. Included transfer allowances and excess-transfer terms depend on the selected plan and region, and AWS may charge for data transfer out beyond an instance’s allowance. Check current regional bundle terms before choosing a plan or forecasting cost; do not assume one region’s allowance or price applies everywhere. A VPS running continuously does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. Test with representative video, motion and audio, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and verify what happens when the process or connection fails. YouTube advises testing encoder failover; a recovery plan should include a way to detect a stopped FFmpeg process, restart it, and confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream again. Do not treat an automatic process restart as proof the broadcast recovered successfully.

- CPU steadily saturated or output stutters: Reduce processing demand or output requirements, validate the command, and retest. If the workload needs consistent high CPU, evaluate EC2 as AWS recommends for video encoding.
- Stream health reports bitrate or connection trouble: Check the server’s outbound capacity and stability, lower the output bitrate if appropriate, and retain YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom.
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube receives no feed: Recheck the stream URL, key, protocol and encoder settings in Live Control Room; reset a key that may have been exposed.
- Stream stops after running for a while: Inspect FFmpeg and system logs, CPU behavior and network interruptions; test the restart procedure and verify stream health after recovery.
- Unexpected transfer charges or limits: Compare actual runtime and bitrate with your estimate, then confirm the current allowance and overage terms for the instance’s region.
