The subscription is shared through that console’s device license; adding someone to a Microsoft family group does not, by itself, give them your Game Pass.
How Home Xbox sharing works
Microsoft’s rules allow anyone using your Home Xbox to play games and other content licensed to that console, including content enabled as part of a subscription such as Xbox Game Pass. The subscriber does not need to remain signed in for other people to use the Home console’s device-licensed content. Set the shared console as Home
- On the Xbox One or Xbox Series console your family will use, sign in with the account that has Game Pass.
- Open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Choose the option to make that console your Home Xbox.
- Have each family member sign in with their own Xbox profile to play available content.
Microsoft allows a Home Xbox to be changed up to five times during a rolling one-year period, so choose the shared console with that limit in mind.
What if a family member uses another Xbox?
A different console does not get the Home Xbox device license. On a non-Home Xbox, the subscriber must be signed in and connected to Xbox services for other users to access the subscriber’s roaming content. If the subscriber signs out, those other users’ roaming access to that content becomes unavailable.

Microsoft’s Digital Goods rules also limit Game Pass games to play on one console at a time. Home-console play may be available to another user while the subscriber plays on a roaming console, but this is not the same as sharing the subscription across multiple consoles without conditions.
Does a Microsoft family group share Game Pass?
No automatic subscription entitlement is established by family-group membership. Microsoft’s cited rules describe sharing through a designated Xbox console, not through adding people to a Microsoft family group. Family-group features and subscription licensing are separate; use Home Xbox sharing for console access rather than treating family membership as a Game Pass plan.

Can family members share Game Pass on PC?
Home Xbox sharing is a console-specific feature, not a general PC family-sharing entitlement. Microsoft associates PC Game Pass with the Microsoft account and describes Windows licensing separately from Xbox console sharing. The cited rules do not establish a matching arrangement that lets a subscriber share PC Game Pass with family members under their separate accounts.
Is there a current Xbox Game Pass family plan?
The Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family offer was a regional preview, not a current default family plan. Xbox’s page says the preview ended in Ireland; Xbox Wire’s February 21, 2023 announcement described the preview’s expansion to six additional countries and access for up to five people, including the account holder. Those historical preview terms should not be taken as present availability.

Which Game Pass benefits are shared?
The official licensing rules establish sharing of games and other subscription-enabled content on the Home Xbox. They do not provide a complete, current, tier-by-tier list of whether every benefit—such as cloud gaming, perks, online multiplayer, or add-ons—is shared in every plan and region. Do not assume that sharing eligible console game content also shares every subscription feature.
