Yes—most people can install the Epic Games Launcher on a supported 64-bit Windows PC or a Mac running a supported version of macOS. Epic currently lists Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11, and macOS 13.5 or later. The launcher is free, but each game downloaded through it has separate hardware and operating-system requirements.

These platform details come from Epic’s launcher requirements page and its Store download page. The mobile app and desktop launcher are related products, but a phone or tablet is not simply running the Windows or Mac launcher.
Epic Games Launcher minimum requirements
Epic’s dedicated support page currently lists these minimum requirements:

Epic’s download page currently shows older, lower figures—including macOS 10.13 or later, 2 GB RAM, and 1.5 GB of storage. Because the pages conflict, use the stricter requirements on the dedicated launcher-support page when checking a computer. Epic also states that macOS beta versions are unsupported.
The 3 GB figure is for the launcher itself. Games, patches, caches, and temporary installation files can require substantially more free space. A computer may therefore have enough room for the launcher but not for a particular game.
How to install it on Windows
- Open Epic’s official download page.
- Select the Windows desktop installation option.
- Open the downloaded installer.
- Follow the Windows installation prompts.
- Approve administrator access if Windows requests it.
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Sign in to an existing Epic account or create one.
Keep extra storage available beyond the listed 3 GB, especially if you plan to install large games. You can install the launcher before buying or downloading any game; the launcher itself is free.

- Open Epic’s official download page.
- Select the Mac desktop installer.
- Open the downloaded installer package.
- Complete the on-screen installation instructions.
- Open the launcher from Applications.
- Sign in or create an Epic Games account.
- Download games that support your Mac and macOS version.
For compatibility, use macOS 13.5 or later—the requirement on Epic’s dedicated launcher page—not the older macOS version still displayed on the download page. If you are running a beta macOS release, a failed installation may reflect Epic’s unsupported-beta policy rather than incompatible Mac hardware.
Do I need an Epic Games account?
You can download the installer without owning a game, but you need an Epic Games account to use the Store and download titles. After signing in, you can claim eligible free games, purchase paid games, access your library, and use the Store across devices.
Enable two-factor authentication on your account. Linking a console account does not automatically guarantee that every purchase, save, or item transfers between platforms. Cross-progression, cloud saves, and entitlement portability depend on the individual game and platform.
Is the Epic Games Launcher free?
Yes. Epic describes the desktop Store as free to install. Individual games may be free or paid, and some games include optional in-game purchases. Installing the launcher does not make paid games free.

What to do if installation fails
Work through these checks in order rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
1. Check Epic’s service status
First check Epic’s public status page. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance recommends this when the launcher is unavailable. On August 18, 2026, the status page showed an unresolved “Error When Installing or Updating on Epic Games Store” incident affecting some Windows 10 users. That incident concerns installing or updating games through the Store and does not prove that the launcher installer itself is incompatible, but it can make a local problem look worse.
2. Confirm the operating system and architecture
Check that you have 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, or macOS 13.5 or later. Windows versions below Windows 10, 32-bit Windows 10, unsupported Linux or ChromeOS setups, and macOS beta releases do not meet Epic’s current dedicated launcher requirements. Compatibility-mode settings do not turn an unsupported operating system into an officially supported one.

3. Check storage, permissions, and the installer file
- Make sure the system has more than the listed 3 GB available.
- Redownload the installer from Epic if the download was interrupted or corrupted.
- On Windows, run the installer with administrator approval.
- On a work, school, family-managed, or corporate computer, ask the administrator whether software installation is restricted.
4. Check security and network restrictions
Antivirus software, endpoint security, Windows Controlled Folder Access, firewalls, proxies, VPNs, DNS problems, and captive portals can block downloads or installation. Temporarily test whether a trusted security or network control is responsible only within the rules of the device owner or organization; do not permanently weaken security protections just to install a game launcher.
5. Clear the launcher cache for update or existing-installation problems
Epic lists clearing the launcher cache as a troubleshooting step. Use Epic’s current cache instructions, because folder names and menu labels can change between versions.
Epic’s older documented instructions identify these version-sensitive locations:

Those paths and the associated procedure are not guaranteed fixes. Follow the current Epic instructions before deleting files.
6. Update drivers and close background applications
Epic’s troubleshooting guidance also includes updating graphics drivers and disabling background applications. These steps are more relevant to launcher crashes, freezes, or abnormal behavior after installation than to a failed first download, so try them after checking support, permissions, storage, network access, and service status.

7. Reinstall only as a later step
Reinstalling is one of Epic’s listed options, but it is not harmless: Epic’s support material warns that reinstalling the launcher can remove installed titles. Check where your games are installed and review Epic’s current recovery instructions before uninstalling an existing launcher. If the computer meets the requirements and the problem continues, use Epic’s troubleshooting guidance and contact Epic Support rather than repeating the same reinstall.

Epic’s current desktop requirements list Windows and macOS, not Linux. Community tools such as compatibility layers and alternative launchers may behave differently from one distribution or game to another, but they should not be presented as official Epic support or guaranteed installation methods.
ChromeOS likewise has no native Epic desktop launcher identified in Epic’s current requirements. Android and selected Apple devices may use the Epic Games Store mobile app where Epic makes it available, but that is distinct from installing the desktop launcher. Availability and minimum mobile operating-system versions are region-specific.
Launcher compatibility is not game compatibility
Meeting the launcher minimums only means the Store application may install. Fortnite, Unreal Engine, and every other title can require more powerful graphics hardware, additional RAM and storage, a different operating-system version, specific drivers, anti-cheat support, or a particular processor. Check the requirements for the individual game before downloading it.
