Visual Boy Advance is not automatically unsafe, but where you download it matters more than the name. The original VisualBoyAdvance project is obsolete; the maintained continuation most people mean today is VisualBoyAdvance-M (VBA-M). VBA-M downloaded from its official GitHub releases page is generally a reasonable, low-risk choice.
The main danger is downloading a fake or modified copy from a ROM site, software aggregator, advertisement, file-hosting page, or unofficial “VBA” website. Even an authentic open-source project is not a guarantee that every binary on the internet is genuine or malware-free, so source verification, scanning, and sensible installation practices still matter.

What “Visual Boy Advance” means
The name is confusing because it can refer to several different things:

- VisualBoyAdvance-M (VBA-M): a continuing fork and the modern project most users are looking for.
- Unofficial repacks: unrelated downloads that use the VBA or VBA-M name but may add advertising software, installers, ROMs, or malicious files.
- Microsoft VBA: “VBA” can also mean Visual Basic for Applications, the macro system used by Microsoft Office. That is unrelated to a Game Boy emulator.
Consequently, an executable named VisualBoyAdvance.exe or visualboyadvance-m.exe is not authentic merely because its filename looks right. The download source and the files included with it are more important than the label.

Is VBA-M malware?
There is no basis in the supplied project information for calling the official VBA-M project malware. VBA-M is an open-source Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulator hosted in a public GitHub repository. The repository provides source code, release history, current builds, and nightly builds. Its releases page also shows signed release information and verified signatures for relevant release data.
Those are useful trust signals:
- The source is publicly inspectable.
- The project has a visible development and release history.
- The official repository identifies the project and its maintainers.
- Official Windows and macOS builds are distributed through the project’s releases area.
They are not the same as an independent security audit of every compiled binary. Most users install a precompiled release rather than compiling the source code and auditing it themselves. Open source improves transparency, but it does not prove that every copy circulating online is authentic, nor does it guarantee that a particular release contains no vulnerabilities.
The most accurate conclusion is therefore: official VBA-M is generally considered a reasonable, low-risk emulator choice when downloaded from the project’s own source, but “100% virus-free” is not a claim that can responsibly be made.

Where to download VBA-M safely
Use the official VBA-M GitHub releases page as the primary download location. The project’s official website warns that unauthorized websites have hosted VBA-M builds and says users should trust only the project’s official website and GitHub repository. It also states that the project does not host ROMs.
As of August 18, 2026, the official releases page listed VBA-M 2.2.3 as the latest release. Release status can change, so use the page’s current stable release rather than relying on an old version number copied from another article.

Sources to trust, in order
- The official VBA-M GitHub repository and releases page.
- The project’s own website, provided that its links lead to the official repository.
- A package supplied by your Linux distribution, where available. Package freshness and build provenance depend on the distribution.
- A source build compiled by you, for technically advanced users who can verify the source and build environment.
Downloads to avoid
- “VBA ROM download” websites
- Emulator aggregators and unofficial mirrors
- Large advertising buttons that obscure the real download link
- Modified “portable” packs or “all games included” bundles
- Downloads that require a separate downloader application
- Installers offering browser extensions, search changes, advertising software, or unrelated programs
- Files described as “VBA cracked,” “VBA premium,” “VBA speed hack,” or “VBA all games included”
A download page that bundles the emulator with ROMs, a BIOS pack, cheat tools, a “codec pack,” or unrelated utilities is not an official VBA-M release simply because it contains a working emulator.
How to install VBA-M safely
Windows
- Open the official GitHub releases page directly rather than following an advertisement.
- Select the current stable release and the archive matching your computer’s architecture.
- Save the archive locally and scan it before extracting it.
- Extract it to a user-controlled folder, such as
DocumentsEmulatorsVBA-M, rather than leaving it permanently in your Downloads folder. - Check that the extracted directory contains the expected emulator files and no unrelated installer, browser extension, crack, or executable.
- Launch the emulator from the extracted folder.
Windows SmartScreen may warn that an application is from an unknown publisher. Do not bypass that warning automatically. First confirm that the archive came from the official GitHub release, that its filename matches an official release asset, and that it contains only expected files. A SmartScreen warning can reflect limited publisher reputation or signing information; it is not, by itself, proof of malware. It is also not a reason to ignore the source of the file.

macOS
- Download the macOS build from the official release page.
- Confirm that the archive came from GitHub or the project’s official website.
- Scan the download where your security software supports it.
- Open the application through Finder so macOS can display its normal security information.
- If macOS blocks it, inspect the application’s source and quarantine status before deciding what to do.
Do not disable Gatekeeper globally to run a download you have not verified. If an application launches unexpected websites, asks for unrelated permissions, installs additional software, or behaves differently from an emulator, remove it and redownload from the official source.
Linux
On Linux, prefer a trusted distribution package when one is available and its age is acceptable. The official repository says packages may be named visualboyadvance-m or vbam; exact versions and build provenance depend on the distribution.

Other options are an official release asset or compiling from the project source. A source build is not automatically safer for everyone: it requires a trustworthy source checkout, a correctly configured build environment, and the ability to verify what was built. For most users, a current package from a reputable distribution or an official release is the more practical choice.
What to do if antivirus flags VBA-M
Do not immediately whitelist the file, and do not assume every warning is harmless. Assess both the warning and the file’s provenance.
A lower-risk pattern
A false positive is more plausible when all or most of the following are true:
- The file came directly from the official GitHub release.
- The archive contains only expected emulator files.
- Multiple reputable scanners do not agree on a threat.
- The detection is generic or heuristic rather than identifying a specific malware family.
- The project’s source, release history, and asset information correspond to the downloaded build.
Emulators can trigger heuristic detections because they interact with game data, emulate hardware, use compression or packing, and may include debugging or low-level functions. That possibility does not establish that a particular warning is false.
A higher-risk pattern
Treat the download as unsafe when:
- It came from an unofficial website, redirect, or file-hosting page.
- The archive includes ROMs, cracks, key generators, unrelated executables, or an opaque installer.
- The installer requests administrator privileges without a clear reason.
- The program opens a browser, changes search settings, creates unexplained startup entries, or installs other software.
- Several independent security tools identify the same specific malware family.
- The file’s hash fails to match an official checksum, where a trusted checksum is available.
Safe response steps
- Leave the file quarantined or delete it; do not whitelist it as a first reaction.
- Record the exact filename, download page, and antivirus detection name.
- Redownload from the official VBA-M releases page.
- Scan the new download before extracting or running it.
- If the official file is repeatedly detected, submit it to the antivirus vendor as a suspected false positive rather than disabling security software globally.
- If you executed the suspicious file, run a full system scan and review startup items, installed applications, browser extensions, and recent downloads.
- If there is evidence of credential theft, change important passwords from a separate trusted device.
Can ROMs or BIOS files infect your computer?
The emulator application, a game ROM, and an optional BIOS image are separate things. A normal ROM image is data intended to be read by an emulator, not a conventional installer. However, complex software can have vulnerabilities, and files obtained from untrusted sites create additional risks. A supposedly “ROM” download may be mislabeled, bundled with an executable, wrapped in a malicious installer, or compressed alongside unrelated malware.

Use particular caution with:
- ROM packs and “all games” bundles
- BIOS packs
- Scripts, patches, trainers, and cheat utilities
- Preconfigured emulator bundles
- Files that ask you to run a setup program before a game will open
Keep ROMs in a separate directory from the emulator and from personal documents. Do not run a file merely because its extension appears related to emulation. A suspicious executable inside a ZIP archive remains suspicious after extraction.
There is also a separate legal question. Malware safety and copyright status are not the same issue. Owning a cartridge does not automatically answer every legal question about downloading a copy from the internet, and rules vary by jurisdiction. Nintendo’s support page treats ROM sites, emulators, and piracy-related activities as infringement-reporting categories, but that page is not a complete statement of copyright law in every country. Obtain and use game images and BIOS files only in ways permitted where you live.
Is VBA-M private?
VBA-M is primarily local software, but the available project information does not establish a complete, current privacy policy or a definitive list of every network connection it may make. The official repository describes an online-update option in release builds, so it would be inaccurate to promise that the emulator never communicates over the network or collects no data.
Privacy-conscious users can:
- Review firewall prompts instead of allowing unexplained connections automatically.
- Monitor outbound connections with the operating system’s firewall or a network-monitoring tool.
- Block network access for the emulator after installation if they do not need update checks or optional online features.
- Keep the emulator’s permissions limited to what it actually needs.
Blocking network access may prevent update checks or optional features, and it is not a substitute for downloading authentic software in the first place.
Does VBA-M require a BIOS file?
Whether a BIOS image is needed depends on the game, feature, and emulator configuration. Do not download a BIOS from an unknown “BIOS pack” website. Such a file may be illegal to distribute, mislabeled, bundled with malware, or simply unnecessary.

Consult the emulator’s official documentation for the particular feature you want to use and configure a legally obtained dump where applicable. Do not confuse a BIOS image with the emulator itself or with a game ROM.
Is VBA-M still a good emulator?
VBA-M remains a credible maintained fork and can be a sensible choice for users who want a familiar, lightweight Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance emulator. The project provides current Windows and Mac builds, source code, nightly builds, and a documented reset option at Help -> Factory Reset.
Its trade-off is that some users may find the interface or documentation dated, and it may not be the strongest choice for every compatibility, timing, audio, or development requirement. If a setting causes crashes or rendering problems, the factory-reset path is a safer recovery step than downloading a random “fixed” repack.

Choose it if accuracy, active development, debugging, or a modern cross-platform workflow matters more to you, or if VBA-M produces problems with a particular game.
Final safety checklist
- Am I downloading VBA-M, rather than an old original VBA build or an unrelated program called VBA?
- Did the file come from the official VBA-M GitHub organization and releases page?
- Does the archive contain only expected emulator files?
- Did antivirus identify a specific malware family, or only produce a generic heuristic warning?
- Did the program request unusual permissions, open unexpected pages, or install unrelated software?
- Are my ROMs, BIOS files, saves, and utilities from lawful and trusted sources?
- Have I backed up my ordinary save files and important save states?
- Have I kept my operating system and antivirus software updated?
Bottom line: Official VBA-M is generally a reasonable emulator to use. The safest approach is to verify the exact project, download only from its official repository, scan before execution, investigate antivirus warnings according to provenance and behavior, keep untrusted ROM bundles away, and switch to mGBA if VBA-M’s age or compatibility does not suit your needs.
