EA says those profiles can’t connect to EA Accounts to play online. But “child account” can also mean an EA child account, which has different age and feature restrictions. The answer depends on which account is the child account.
Which account is the child account?
An Xbox child or limited sub-account is a profile governed by Xbox family settings and, in the relevant case, sharing an Xbox subscription. An EA child account is an EA Account for someone below the age threshold in their country. One player can be subject to both sets of rules.
EA’s Link to an EA Account guidance says Xbox child accounts and other limited sub-accounts that share an Xbox subscription can’t connect to EA Accounts to play online. That is an account-eligibility restriction, not simply a setting to change or a linking step to repeat.
What if the child account is an EA Account?
EA says a parent who creates an adult EA Account cannot link their child’s EA Account to it until the child is eligible to upgrade to a teen account. Eligibility depends on the child’s country, so there is no single age threshold that applies everywhere. Don’t use a parent’s adult EA Account as a workaround for the child’s EA Account.

EA child accounts have restrictions that vary by country, game, platform, and parental-control settings. Some features may be unavailable, but restrictions documented for PC or Mac—such as certain online modes, purchases, companion apps, or Steam linking—should not be assumed to apply to every Xbox game.
Do Xbox parental controls affect EA games?
Yes. Xbox family settings apply to EA games on the console. For example, if communication with other players is turned off in Xbox parental controls, communication is also turned off in the EA game. These permissions control which features a player may use; they do not remove EA’s separate restriction on linking a shared-subscription Xbox child or limited sub-account for online play.

How to link an eligible Xbox account
Use these steps only if the Xbox profile is eligible to connect. EA describes the process as follows:
- Open the EA game on the Xbox and sign in with the primary EA Account.
- If prompted, enter the one-time code sent to that EA Account’s email address.
- If the same email address was used for both accounts, EA says they may connect automatically when the game loads.
Check existing links before changing accounts
Review the platform connections on EA’s Connected Accounts page before attempting a new link. EA says links can be switched up to three times in a rolling year and recommends choosing an account the player expects to keep, so progress and purchases stay associated with the intended account.

Do not link accounts casually in the hope of moving progress later. EA says child-account progress, purchases, and linked data cannot be transferred to a parent account; EA Accounts also cannot be merged or shared.

If linking still fails
- Identify whether the child status applies to the Xbox profile, the EA Account, or both.
- Check the existing platform link on EA’s Connected Accounts page.
- Write down the game, the account types involved, and the exact error message.
- Check the applicable Xbox family permissions and contact EA Help if the account does not match the documented shared-subscription case or the error is different.
