Yes. You can use a flash drive to back up or transfer your The Sims 4 mods and custom content. However, the game does not normally search a USB drive for mods. To play with them, copy the files into the computer’s usual Sims 4 user folder—or, for advanced Windows setups, redirect that folder to external storage.
Where The Sims 4 actually stores mods
The Mods folder is normally part of your Sims 4 user-data folder, not the folder containing the installed game program.

These locations are documented in CurseForge’s manual installation guide. Do not put mods in a folder such as Program FilesEA GamesThe Sims 4; moving the EA app or Steam installation does not automatically move your user files.

What you can store on the flash drive
A USB drive can hold any of the ordinary files associated with your Sims 4 profile, including:
| Folder or file | What it contains |
|---|---|
Mods |
Gameplay mods and custom content |
Saves |
Your saved games |
Tray |
Downloaded or created Sims, households, rooms, and lots |
Screenshots |
In-game screenshots |
| ZIP/RAR archives | Original mod downloads, which are not active until extracted |
Files for Sims, households, rooms, and lots are separate from Mods. CurseForge identifies common Tray file types such as .trayitem, .bpi, .hhi, .rmi, and .sgi. Copying only Mods will not transfer your saves or library content.
For a useful backup, include a text file or spreadsheet listing creators, download dates, version numbers, dependencies, and expansion-pack requirements. Keep a dated, known-working backup separate from newer downloads.
How to copy Sims 4 mods to a flash drive
Windows
- Close The Sims 4 and the EA app.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:Users[username]DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4. - Right-click
Modsand choose Copy. Copy rather than cut until you have verified the backup. - Open the flash drive and create a dated folder, for example
Sims 4 Backup - 2026-09-05. - Paste the
Modsfolder there. - For a broader profile backup, also copy
Saves,Tray, and optionallyScreenshots. - Use Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware option before disconnecting the drive.
macOS
- Quit The Sims 4.
- In Finder, open
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/. - Copy
Modsinto a dated folder on the flash drive. - Copy
SavesandTrayas well if you are moving your complete profile. - Eject the drive in Finder before unplugging it.
A flash drive should not be your only copy. It can be lost, corrupted, overwritten, or disconnected unexpectedly. Keep another backup on the computer or a separate storage device.
How to restore mods on another computer
- Install The Sims 4 on the destination computer and launch it once.
- Quit the game. The first launch should create the destination computer’s Sims 4 user folder.
- Open the backup on the flash drive.
- Copy the backed-up
Modsfolder intoDocuments/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/on the destination computer. - If a new
Modsfolder already exists, rename it toMods-oldbefore restoring, or merge the contents carefully. - Restore
SavesandTrayseparately if you are transferring those files. - Start the game and open Game Options → Other.
- Enable Enable Custom Content and Mods. Enable Script Mods Allowed when your mods require scripts.
- Apply the changes and restart the game.
EA’s mod-installation instructions confirm that mods must be placed in the Mods folder, enabled in Game Options, and followed by a restart.

Can you play directly from a flash drive?
Not through the normal supported setup. The Sims 4 does not provide an in-game option to select an arbitrary USB folder as the Mods location. If the expected user folder is missing, the game may create a new empty folder instead of searching another drive.
The practical recommendation is to use the flash drive as transport: copy the current Mods folder to the computer, play from the normal local folder, and eject the drive afterward. This avoids drive-letter changes, missing-drive errors, slow or inconsistent USB performance, accidental removal, and file corruption.

Windows can make the folder at the normal Sims 4 path point to a folder stored on another drive. This is an advanced workaround, not a normal Sims 4 setting. Skip it if you are uncomfortable with Command Prompt or path-sensitive file operations.
Before you begin
- Close the game and EA app.
- Make a separate backup of the Mods folder, preferably the entire
The Sims 4user folder. - Move the active folder to an external drive only after confirming the copy works.
- Keep the external drive connected before starting the game.
- Do not unplug it while the game is running.
- Be aware that Windows may assign a different drive letter to removable storage.
For example, if the real folder is on drive E:, a directory junction can be created with:
mklink /J "C:UsersYourNameDocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4Mods" "E:Sims 4 ExternalMods"
Replace YourName and E: with your actual Windows username and drive letter. The first path is the location the game expects; the second is the real folder on the external drive. Microsoft documents the mklink command, including /J for a directory junction and /D for a symbolic link.

The original Mods folder must not still exist at the link location when you run the command. Verify your backup before renaming or removing it. If you later undo the setup, remove the junction itself with Command Prompt:
rmdir "C:UsersYourNameDocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4Mods"
Do not delete the target folder on the external drive by mistake. After removing the junction, create or restore an ordinary local Mods folder if you want to return to the standard setup.
This technique can also be applied to a broader Sims 4 user folder, but moving the entire folder increases the consequences of a wrong path or disconnected drive. For most players, manually copying files is safer.
Flash drive or portable SSD?
| USB flash drive | Portable SSD | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Occasional backups and transfers | Large collections and frequent use |
| Advantages | Small, simple, and usually sufficient for a modest Mods folder | Typically offers more capacity and more consistent performance |
| Drawbacks | Easy to lose; some models are slow or unreliable under sustained use | Costs more and still must remain connected during active use |
| Active external storage | Usually not ideal | Generally the better choice |
A portable SSD is a better fit for a very large CC library, repeated transfers, or an externally stored Sims 4 user folder. For example, Samsung advertises up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write for its T7 line, but actual speeds depend on the computer, cable, port, filesystem, and workload. The T7 and ruggedized T7 Shield are examples, not requirements.
External storage does not guarantee higher frame rates. Mod-related lag and performance issues are more closely connected to the computer, game settings, mod complexity, CPU, and available memory. EA notes that mods can consume additional memory and CPU resources.

How much storage do you need?
There is no universal size recommendation because collections vary. Measure the actual The Sims 4 folder and include room for:
.packageand.ts4scriptfiles;- large high-resolution custom content;
- duplicate or older downloads;
- saves, Tray files, and screenshots;
- original ZIP/RAR archives;
- additional dated backups.
EA’s FAQ lists at least 25 GB of free space for the game and at least 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games. That is a minimum requirement, not a practical ceiling for a large mod library. Choose a device with more capacity than your current backup and leave meaningful free space for future patches and backup copies.
Why mods may not appear in the game
- Wrong folder: You copied files to the game-installation directory instead of the Documents-based user folder.
- Wrong Documents location: OneDrive may redirect Documents to a path such as
C:Users[username]OneDriveDocuments. Use the path containing the activeElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4folder. - ZIP or RAR not extracted: Extract the archive and place the actual supported files in Mods.
- Mods disabled: Check Game Options → Other.
- Script permission missing: Turn on Script Mods Allowed for script-based mods.
- Restart skipped: Apply the settings and relaunch the game.
- Patch incompatibility: A game update may disable mods or break outdated files.
- Wrong Windows account: Confirm that you are using the same user profile that contains the restored files.
- Only shortcuts or archives copied: Confirm that the folder contains real
.packageor.ts4scriptfiles.
If the problem continues, launch the game once and quit, verify the newly used user-folder path, temporarily remove all mods, and add them back in small batches. This helps isolate a broken file.
If saves or households are missing, restore Saves and Tray separately. The Mods folder cannot supply either type of content.

Copying a mod collection correctly does not guarantee that it remains compatible. After a Sims 4 patch, mods may be disabled or may cause errors. Back up your saves before testing, avoid saving over an important save while the game is unstable, and keep a dated “known working” collection separate from new downloads.

EA recommends checking mod compatibility and adding files back in batches when an update causes problems. Update script mods where possible, then test groups of mods rather than replacing everything at once. See EA’s guidance on mods, updates, and error codes.
Mods are third-party content. EA and Maxis do not pre-screen, endorse, or support individual mods. Download from trusted creators or established sources, scan downloads before opening them, and be especially cautious with executable “mod installers” that bundle unrelated software. A .package or .ts4script extension is not proof that a download is safe.
Best method for each goal
| Your goal | Recommended method |
|---|---|
| Back up a modest collection | Copy Mods to a dated folder on a reputable flash drive |
| Move to a new computer | Copy Mods, Saves, and Tray; launch once on the new computer; then restore them |
| Play on two computers occasionally | Keep a backup on USB and copy the current collection to the active computer before playing |
| Free internal storage for a large collection | Consider a portable SSD and a Windows junction if you are technically confident |
| Avoid technical setup | Keep active files in the normal local Documents folder |
| Keep download archives safe | Use a separate USB, SSD, or cloud backup, but do not assume synchronization makes files active in-game |
Tools such as the CurseForge App can help organize supported content, and CurseForge says manually installed mods can still be detected. It does not replace a backup or guarantee that every mod is included in its catalog.
Bottom line
Use a flash drive for backup and transfer, not as a plug-and-play Mods location. Copy the files into the active computer’s normal Sims 4 user folder before launching the game. Choose a portable SSD for a large collection or frequent external use, and use a Windows junction only if you understand the risks, drive letters, backups, and rollback steps.
