When a PS4 says “Cannot use the content. To use the content, purchase it from PlayStation Store”, it does not necessarily mean you need to buy the game again. Usually, the console cannot verify that the signed-in user has the right license.
Start by signing in with the account that purchased or claimed the content, then restore licenses and activate the console as that account’s primary PS4. These steps solve many license and sharing problems without deleting your games or saves.

Check the full error code first
“Cannot use the content” is a symptom shared by several PS4 problems. Record the code shown on screen before troubleshooting:

| CE-33937-5 | The current user cannot validate the content license. Sony’s guidance is to use the licensed account or purchase the content from PlayStation Store. |
| NP-34958-9 | A game is padlocked, commonly indicating a license or primary-console activation problem. |
| CE-33950-0 | The console cannot connect to PlayStation servers to verify the license. |
| E-80558337 | The PS4 is not properly recognizing the content or its registration information. |
| CE-33678-7 | You may not be entitled to additional content, or the installed content may not match saved or previously installed data. |
| CE-34305-5, CE-38612-0, or CE-30005-8 | Possible hard-drive, application-data, or disc-reading trouble rather than a straightforward license issue. |
For the exact CE-33937-5 explanation, see Sony’s PlayStation support page. Other codes are listed in Sony’s PS4 error-code guide.

Try these fixes first
1. Use the account that owns the content
Check which PSN profile is launching the game. A digital game belongs to the account that purchased it, not automatically to every user on the console.
On the purchasing account, check Transaction History and confirm that the item is listed. Also identify what type of content it is:
- A purchased digital game should appear in the buyer’s account.
- A shared game requires the buyer’s account to configure the console correctly.
- A PlayStation Plus game depends on the applicable subscription and entitlement remaining valid.
- A trial, demo, add-on, or regional edition may not provide access to the full game.
If the purchase does not appear in the account’s transaction history, verify that you are using the correct PSN account before attempting repairs.

Restoring licenses resynchronizes licenses already associated with the signed-in account. It cannot transfer ownership or create a license that the account never had.
- Sign in to the account that purchased or claimed the content.
- Open Settings from the PS4 home screen.
- Select Account Management.
- Select Restore Licenses.
- Choose Restore.
Restart the PS4 after the process finishes and try the game again. Sony recommends this procedure for missing or padlocked games and add-ons; its license-restoration guide also notes that it does not affect console data.
3. Activate the correct primary PS4
If another account bought the game, that account generally needs to activate this console as its primary PS4 before other local users can access eligible purchased applications and certain PlayStation Plus sharing benefits.

- Sign in to the purchasing account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Select Activate.
Each PSN account can have one primary PS4. If the account is already linked to another console, deactivate the old console through the account’s official controls before activating this one. If you no longer have the old PS4, Sony offers remote deactivation of all consoles, but that option is limited to once every six months. Do not use it casually.
See Sony’s primary PS4 activation guide for the current account and sharing rules. Never use unofficial account-selling or “license activation” services, and do not give your PSN credentials to strangers.
4. Restart the console completely
Close the game and turn off the PS4 completely rather than placing it in Rest Mode. After it has shut down, disconnect the power cable, wait briefly, reconnect it, and start the console again. Sign in to the licensed account and retry the content.
5. Check PlayStation Network
If the code is CE-33950-0, the problem may be that the PS4 cannot reach PlayStation’s servers to verify the license.
- Check the official PlayStation Network status page.
- Confirm the PS4 is connected to the internet.
- Sign out of PSN and sign in again.
- Restart the PS4.
- Restart the router. If activation fails, turn the router off, wait at least five minutes, restart it, and try again.
Retry after any service outage has cleared. Do not assume that changing DNS, opening router ports, or using a VPN will fix a license-specific CE-33937-5 error.

- Open Settings.
- Select System Software Update.
- Install any available update.
- Restart the PS4 and test the game.
If a normal update fails, Sony provides a USB update procedure. The USB drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and contain a folder named PS4, an UPDATE subfolder, and Sony’s official PS4UPDATE.PUP file. Follow the instructions in Sony’s PS4 system-software guide.

Fixes for a single digital game
If only one title is affected, the account and the local installation are the most useful places to look.
Verify the edition, region, and add-ons
An add-on may belong to a different edition, region, or account than the installed game. Confirm that the base game and DLC match. A digital trial or demo also does not necessarily grant access to the full version.
Delete and reinstall the game
Do this only after confirming ownership and restoring licenses:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Back up important saved data first.
- Delete the affected application from the PS4.
- Sign in to the purchasing account.
- Download the game again from that account’s Library.
- Install available updates and launch it again.
Deleting an application is not the same as deleting saved data, but check your saves before removing anything. If you have the relevant PlayStation Plus access, confirm that cloud saves have synchronized; otherwise use a USB backup through Settings > System > Back Up and Restore. Sony’s application-error guidance supports updating, restarting, restoring licenses, and reinstalling when local application data is damaged.
If the game was purchased by someone else
Ask the purchaser to sign in on the console and confirm the transaction. That account should then activate this PS4 as its primary console. Once configured, other local users may be able to use eligible purchased applications, but the game is still licensed to the purchaser’s account.
If you cannot access the purchasing account, there is no legitimate repair that transfers the license to your account. Recover the original account, use the owner’s properly configured primary PS4, or purchase the game through your own account.

If the game came from PlayStation Plus
Previously downloading a PlayStation Plus title does not guarantee permanent access. Check that:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The account that claimed the title is signed in.
- The relevant PlayStation Plus subscription is active.
- The title remains available to that account under the applicable PlayStation Plus entitlement.
Then restore licenses and retry. Buying PlayStation Plus will not restore a game purchased by a different account, repair a failing drive, or bypass an account suspension. Sony’s activation guidance includes checks for PlayStation Plus status and title availability.
If several games show the error
Multiple affected games point away from one damaged installation and toward an account, activation, network, system-software, or storage problem. Work through this order:
- Check PlayStation Network status.
- Confirm the PS4 is online.
- Sign in with the account that owns the games.
- Restore licenses.
- Confirm primary PS4 activation.
- Update system software.
- Restart the console.
- Rebuild the database if the console also shows inconsistent icons or installations.
If valid purchases remain inaccessible after these steps, contact PlayStation Support rather than repeatedly reinstalling every game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Safe Mode to rebuild the database
Rebuild Database is appropriate when installations or icons behave inconsistently, several titles are affected, or reinstalling one game did not help. It scans the drive and creates a new content database; it does not restore ownership or transfer licenses.
- Turn off the PS4 by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, roughly seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Choose 5. Rebuild Database.
Back up important data before using Safe Mode. Sony warns that some Safe Mode options can cause data loss. See the official Safe Mode instructions.

If the game is on disc
A disc game is not fixed by restoring digital licenses. Instead:
- Remove and reinsert the disc.
- Clean it with a soft, clean cloth.
- Test another game, Blu-ray, or DVD.
- Use Safe Mode option 5, Rebuild Database, if appropriate.
If multiple discs fail, the optical drive may need service. PS4 consoles also cannot play burned discs or audio CDs. Sony provides separate disc-reading troubleshooting.
Do not confuse settings restoration with initialization
Restore Default Settings
Settings > Initialization > Restore Default Settings restores system settings without deleting games, applications, screenshots, video clips, or saved data, according to Sony. It may help when settings are corrupted, but it does not create a missing game license.
Initialize PS4
Initialize PS4 deletes user and game data and cannot be undone. Use it only after backing up saves and exhausting account, license, network, reinstall, and database checks.
Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)
This is the most destructive option. It deletes all user data and removes the PS4 system software before reinstalling it with Sony’s official file. Do not use it as a routine fix for CE-33937-5. Sony documents the risks in its restore and initialization guide and system-software guide.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Escalate the issue when the purchase is visible in transaction history but remains inaccessible after license restoration and primary activation, when multiple owned games fail, or when the account cannot be activated. Also contact Sony if the console reports repeated HDD or system-software errors, discs are not recognized, or the account may be suspended, compromised, or inaccessible.
Have the full error code, PSN account information, purchase details, console model, and the troubleshooting steps already attempted ready for support. Use Sony’s official PS4 support and repair pages.
