Yes. GTA V Legacy runs very well on the original ASUS ROG Ally, while GTA V Enhanced is playable with more careful settings—especially on the Ryzen Z1 Extreme model. ASUS reported approximately 70–90 FPS in Legacy Story Mode at 1080p on Turbo, although demanding city scenes can fall toward 60 FPS. Those figures are for ASUS’s 2023 Legacy-era testing, not a guarantee for Enhanced.
Does GTA V run on the ROG Ally?

Enhanced’s minimum is much higher: Rockstar specifies a Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590, 8GB of RAM, and a GTX 1630 or Radeon RX 6400-class GPU with 4GB of VRAM. It requires 105GB on an SSD. Rockstar’s recommended specification rises to an RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 6600 XT with 8GB of VRAM.
The Ally uses integrated graphics and shared system memory rather than a discrete graphics card with dedicated VRAM. Therefore, its 16GB of RAM should not be compared directly with Rockstar’s 4GB VRAM minimum. The specifications suggest that the Z1 Extreme is the more appropriate Ally for Enhanced, but they do not prove a particular frame rate.

In its ROG Ally GTA V performance guide, ASUS reported approximately:
- Turbo mode, 1080p, Normal settings: about 70–90 FPS in Story Mode, with drops toward 60 FPS in busy areas.
- Performance mode, 1080p, Normal settings: about 50–60 FPS.
ASUS used the built-in benchmark and Story Mode without mods. Online sessions, drivers, background software, power state, and scene complexity can change the result. The guide was published on June 9, 2023, so its measurements should be understood as Legacy-era results.

Enhanced
Enhanced should run best on the Z1 Extreme, but there is no first-party ASUS Enhanced benchmark in the supplied evidence. A smooth 30–60 FPS target is more defensible than promising a locked 60 FPS, particularly at 1080p or with ray tracing enabled. The regular Z1 has considerably less graphics hardware and should not be expected to match the Z1 Extreme.

Both original Ally models have a 1920×1080, 120Hz display and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD. ASUS’s specifications confirm the major difference: the Z1 Extreme has 12 GPU compute units, compared with four in the regular Z1.
Best GTA V settings for the ROG Ally
Legacy: balanced 60-FPS starting point
For Legacy, start with ASUS’s published profile:

- FXAA on; MSAA and Reflection MSAA off
- Population Density 5/10; Population Variety 10/10
- Distance Scaling 7/10; Extended Distance Scaling 4/10

Use Turbo when plugged in if you want the highest frame rate. Performance mode is a sensible choice when you want lower power consumption and are satisfied with roughly 50–60 FPS in ASUS’s Legacy testing.

- Begin at 1280×720 or 1600×900.
- Target 30 FPS first, then try 40 or 45 FPS if frame times remain stable.
- Use a Low or Medium preset.
- Keep textures at Medium or High depending on memory behavior.
- Disable ray tracing.
- Reduce population density, extended distance scaling, shadows, reflections, grass, and volumetric effects.
- Use the game’s upscaler if available and the resulting image remains acceptable.
- Try 1080p only after confirming stable performance.
Battery-focused play
On battery, cap the frame rate at 30 or 40 FPS, lower resolution before reducing every individual setting, and use Performance mode. A consistent frame rate generally feels better than allowing the Ally to swing between high and low FPS while consuming more power.
How to install GTA V
- Update Windows and the Ally’s ASUS and AMD drivers.
- Install GTA V from the PC storefront where you own it.
- Install or allow Rockstar Games Launcher when prompted.
- Sign in to the Rockstar account associated with your purchase.
- Complete activation and entitlement verification.
- Launch Story Mode first and establish a performance baseline.
- Apply the relevant settings above, then test GTA Online separately.
Rockstar requires internet access for activation and online play, plus periodic entitlement verification. Supporting software can include the Rockstar Games Launcher, DirectX, Chromium, and Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable. A single-use serial code is tied to one Rockstar account, and Rockstar states that only one login is allowed per account at a time.
Storage requirements
Rockstar lists 125GB for Legacy and 105GB on an SSD for Enhanced. The Ally’s 512GB SSD is enough for the game, but Windows, launchers, updates, and other games reduce the available space. Check which edition your purchase includes before installing, and do not assume a large game library will fit comfortably without expansion.

Yes, provided you have internet access and the required account and entitlement checks complete. However, do not assume Online will perform exactly like Story Mode. ASUS’s Ally testing used Story Mode and notes that online performance can vary with session population, player activity, and play style.

Mods should be treated separately. A modification used in Story Mode should not automatically be taken into GTA Online; never assume that mods are safe or permitted online.
What to do if GTA V stutters or will not launch
Low FPS or stuttering
- Restart the Ally.
- Connect the 65W charger and switch to Turbo mode.
- Cap the frame rate at 30, 40, 45, or 60 FPS.
- Reduce resolution before lowering every quality setting.
- In Enhanced, disable ray tracing and reduce shadows, grass, reflections, and distance scaling.
- Update Windows, ASUS drivers, AMD graphics drivers, and the game.
- Close unnecessary background applications.
- Verify the game files in Steam, Epic, or the relevant storefront.
- Test Story Mode before diagnosing an Online-specific issue.
If problems continue, consult Rockstar’s PC troubleshooting guidance for driver, DirectX, Visual C++, launcher, crash, and installation steps. Reinstall or repair Rockstar Games Launcher if activation or launch errors persist.
The game will not launch
- Confirm Rockstar Games Launcher is installed and updated.
- Check that you are using the correct Rockstar account.
- Put the Ally online for the first launch and activation.
- Verify the game files.
- Confirm required DirectX and Visual C++ components are present.
- Remove conflicting launch options and temporarily disable mods.
- Check that an aggressive power-saving profile is not preventing normal startup.
Is the ROG Ally worth buying for GTA V?
Choose the Z1 Extreme if GTA V is a major reason for buying the handheld, particularly if you want Enhanced. It offers the strongest chance of maintaining smooth performance after reducing demanding settings.
The regular Z1 is reasonable for Legacy and may suit buyers willing to use lower settings or resolution. It is not the model to choose if your expectation is Enhanced at high settings or a stable 60 FPS.
The Ally is a good fit if you want a Windows handheld with native access to PC storefronts, already own GTA V on PC, and are comfortable managing Windows updates, launchers, drivers, settings, and storage. It is a poor fit if you want console-like simplicity, maximum Enhanced graphics, ray tracing, or long high-FPS sessions away from a charger. ASUS’s original Z1 Extreme product page may also have limited availability, so check current stock and pricing rather than assuming an older unit is good value: ASUS ROG Ally product page.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: GTA V Legacy is a strong yes on the original ASUS ROG Ally. GTA V Enhanced is also a reasonable choice on the Ryzen Z1 Extreme with reduced settings, no ray tracing, and realistic 30–60 FPS expectations. The regular Z1 can handle Legacy, but the Z1 Extreme is the model to buy when GTA V performance matters most.
