Which ROG Ally model do you have?
Do not treat every ROG Ally as the same device. ASUS’s published Red Dead Redemption 2 results were measured on the Ryzen Z1 Extreme model, not automatically on the less powerful base Z1 version.

How the PC requirements compare with the Ally
Steam lists these official PC requirements:

The Ally does not contain a discrete graphics card with its own dedicated VRAM. Its integrated Radeon GPU shares system memory with Windows and the game. That makes the desktop GPU comparison imperfect: resolution, power limit, memory allocation, drivers, and upscaling have a major effect on actual performance.
The game also needs a large amount of storage. Keep at least the stated 150GB free, with additional space preferable for Windows updates, shader data, launcher files, and other games.
How to install Red Dead Redemption 2 on ROG Ally
You can install the Windows PC version through Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher, or the Epic Games Store. The Steam version still involves Rockstar account integration, so allow time for the launcher and account-linking process to finish.

- Update Windows.
- Open Armoury Crate SE.
- Go to Settings → Update Center.
- Install available BIOS, firmware, Armoury Crate, chipset, and graphics-driver updates.
- Install RDR2 through your chosen storefront.
- Sign in to or create a Rockstar Games account when prompted.
- Allow the Rockstar Games Launcher to complete its setup before launching the game again.
Updating first is important because ASUS uses Armoury Crate’s Update Center for Ally system software and driver updates. Avoid naming a particular driver or BIOS version as “the latest”; those labels change over time.
Best ROG Ally settings for Red Dead Redemption 2
The following is ASUS’s published starting profile for the Z1 Extreme Ally. It is a practical baseline, not a guarantee for every Ally model, driver, BIOS, game build, or game mode.
Armoury Crate settings
- Press the Command Center button.
- Select Operating Mode.
- Choose Turbo.
- Connect the Ally to wall power when maximum performance matters.
- Open Command Center and enable Real-Time Monitor to watch FPS, frame-time behavior, CPU/GPU usage, temperature, battery level, and power draw.
Turbo mode increases available power, but it also increases heat, fan noise, and battery drain. A high average FPS is not enough by itself; watch for inconsistent frame times and stutter.

This profile deliberately keeps texture quality high while reducing expensive lighting, volumetric, reflection, water, shadow, and grass settings.

FSR, image quality, and lower-resolution fallbacks
Start with FSR Quality. It renders at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs the image at the display resolution, improving the performance-versus-image-quality trade-off.
- If the image looks soft, adjust FSR sharpening to taste.
- If you need more performance, test FSR Balanced.
- Do not automatically combine aggressive resolution scaling with FSR; it can make the image unnecessarily soft and may not improve frame times.
If 1080p remains too demanding, use Radeon Super Resolution instead:
- Open the game’s Display or Graphics menu.
- Set the game to fullscreen.
- Select 1280×720 or 1600×900.
- Exit the game.
- Open Command Center.
- Enable AMD RSR.
- Relaunch the game.
RSR scales a lower in-game resolution up to the Ally’s native display resolution and applies only when the game is running below native resolution. ASUS’s general Ally performance guide documents this process.
Should you change the Ally’s VRAM allocation?
The Ally’s GPU uses shared system memory, and Armoury Crate lets you reserve some of that memory for graphics. Start with the default allocation rather than changing it automatically.

- Open Armoury Crate.
- Go to Settings → Operating Mode → GPU Settings.
- Find Memory Assigned to GPU.
- If RDR2 stutters, reports insufficient VRAM, or behaves inconsistently, test a higher allocation.
- Reboot the Ally after changing the value.
ASUS identifies 6GB as a possible starting point for some games on 16GB Ally models, not as a universal RDR2 requirement. More reserved VRAM means less memory for Windows and other applications.

If Windows reports low memory or other games become less stable, reduce the allocation and return to the previous setting. The 24GB Ally X has more general memory headroom, but that does not make every VRAM allocation automatically optimal.
What performance should you expect?
ASUS’s published Z1 Extreme testing provides the most relevant documented baseline:

These figures are ASUS results from a published guide dated June 9, 2023. Newer drivers, BIOS releases, Windows updates, game updates, power settings, temperatures, and background software can change performance. Story Mode and Red Dead Online can also behave differently.

Do not use a peak FPS counter as proof of smoothness. Check frame-time consistency with Armoury Crate’s Real-Time Monitor, especially while riding through busy areas, entering towns, or streaming new scenery.

Only getting 20–30 FPS
- Confirm that the Ally is in Turbo mode.
- Connect it to wall power.
- Confirm the game is using the intended resolution and FSR setting.
- Check that MSAA, volumetrics, reflections, and water quality have not been raised accidentally.
- Update the Ally through Armoury Crate’s Update Center.
- Check whether the problem is an unstable frame time rather than a low average FPS.
Stuttering despite a reasonable average FPS
Check frame-time behavior, shader compilation, background launchers, driver status, and VRAM allocation. More reserved VRAM is not always better: if Windows is short on memory, reduce the allocation and reboot.
ERR_GFX_STATE at launch
Rockstar’s documented recovery sequence is:
- Update the AMD graphics driver.
- Launch RDR2 and open Settings → Graphics.
- Set Advanced Settings to Unlocked.
- Change Graphics API to DirectX 12.
- Save, but do not restart when prompted.
- Return to the main menu.
- Exit the game.
- Relaunch it.
If the error remains, locate RDR2.exe in the installation folder, right-click it, choose Properties → Compatibility, enable Run this program as administrator and Disable fullscreen optimizations, then apply the changes.

Error code FFFFFFFF
Rockstar lists external audio devices, outdated graphics drivers, and advanced graphics settings among the possible causes.
- Try starting the game before connecting headphones or speakers.
- Update the AMD graphics driver.
- Open
DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings. - Back up
system.xml. - Open
system.xmlin Notepad. - Change
kSettingAPI_VulkantokSettingAPI_DX12. - Save the file.
- Delete only files beginning with
sga_in that same folder. - Relaunch the game.
The game may recreate shader-cache files. Do not delete unrelated files. Rockstar’s full instructions are available in its guide to error FFFFFFFF.
DirectX 12 versus Vulkan
Use DirectX 12 as the first troubleshooting choice because ASUS used it in its Ally profile and Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE instructions recommend switching to it. It is not universally superior. If DirectX 12 is unstable on your particular driver or game installation, Vulkan remains a valid fallback. Rockstar documents changing graphics APIs depending on the error.
What not to expect
- Not a locked 60 FPS: 40–50 FPS is the realistic documented target for the Z1 Extreme profile.
- Not native 1080p Ultra: the profile preserves Ultra textures but reduces several expensive settings.
- Not identical results on every Ally: the base Z1 and Z1 Extreme have very different graphics hardware.
- Not maximum battery life: Turbo mode and wall power improve performance while increasing consumption, heat, and fan noise.
- Not identical Story Mode and Online performance: online play can affect performance.
- Not the same experience on a 1440p or 4K television: an optimized 1080p handheld target does not guarantee equivalent external-display performance.
- Not an automatic reason to buy a microSD card: the 150GB installation makes internal storage and free space important, but storage media should be chosen based on separately verified sustained performance and reliability.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 worth playing on the ROG Ally?
Yes, particularly on the Z1 Extreme Ally and Ally X, if you are comfortable tuning the game and targeting roughly 40–50 FPS. It is a strong portable Story Mode experience when played in Turbo mode, especially while plugged in.
The base Z1 is a more qualified recommendation because its four graphics compute units are substantially fewer than the Z1 Extreme’s 12. Prospective buyers who demand locked 60 FPS, Ultra settings, or long unplugged sessions should choose a different performance target—or a more powerful gaming system.
The Ally X offers more memory and storage headroom, which can make large PC games easier to manage, but its extra memory should not be presented as a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade over the Z1 Extreme.
