Can You Use an External Hard Drive with a Nintendo Switch? How to Expand Storage

External USB hard drives and SSDs cannot expand Nintendo Switch game storage. Here is what works instead for every Switch model, including microSD limits, save-data rules, migration steps, and media backup options.

No. Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED Model, and Nintendo Switch 2 do not support external USB hard drives or USB SSDs for installing or playing games. The correct storage upgrade depends on your console: the original Switch family uses compatible microSD cards, while Switch 2 requires microSD Express.

A USB drive can still help you store screenshots and videos—but only indirectly through a computer. It cannot act as attached game storage, and Switch save data is not stored on any removable card.

Quick answer: which storage works with your Switch?

Console Supported expansion Maximum capacity Save-data location
Nintendo Switch microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC Up to 2TB Console system memory
Nintendo Switch Lite microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC Up to 2TB Console system memory
Nintendo Switch OLED Model microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC Up to 2TB Console system memory
Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express only Up to 2TB Console system memory

Nintendo’s official data-management guidance says external USB hard drives are not currently supported on either generation. That also rules out using an external SSD, USB flash drive, powered enclosure, USB hub, or USB-to-SATA adapter as a game-storage workaround. See Nintendo’s original Switch data-management FAQ and Switch 2 data-management FAQ.

Why connecting a hard drive to the dock does not work

The Switch dock’s USB ports do not turn the console into a USB storage system. Connecting a drive may provide power or allow compatible accessories to function, but Nintendo does not support using that drive to install, move, or launch games.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

Changing the drive’s format will not solve this. Neither FAT32 nor exFAT formatting makes an unsupported USB drive a supported storage device. A faster SSD does not change the compatibility position either. Nintendo does not identify USB power, filesystem, dock hardware, or USB speed as a user-fixable reason; the practical fact is simply that USB external game storage is not supported.

Modified-console or homebrew arrangements are outside Nintendo’s supported software environment and should not be treated as normal solutions for a standard console.

What storage should you buy instead?

Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model: microSD

These three consoles support:

  • microSD cards up to 2GB
  • microSDHC cards from 4GB to 32GB
  • microSDXC cards from 64GB to 2TB

For most game libraries, a reputable microSDXC card is the practical choice. Nintendo recommends a high-speed UHS-I card with an approximate transfer speed of 60–95MB/s or higher. A card does not need Nintendo branding to work, but buy from a reputable seller and verify the capacity and return policy. Nintendo’s microSD card guidance is the definitive compatibility reference.

As general capacity guidance, 128GB suits light digital users, 256GB is a balanced option, and 512GB or more is useful for larger digital libraries. These are practical recommendations, not Nintendo requirements; the official maximum is 2TB. A more expensive card also does not guarantee proportionally faster game loading because the console and individual games can be limiting factors.

Nintendo Switch 2: microSD Express only

Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for storing and loading digital game data. A conventional microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card that works in an original Switch is not a Switch 2 game-storage solution.

Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB and has 256GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use. The first time you use a microSD Express card, Switch 2 requires an internet system update. Check Nintendo’s card compatibility guidance before buying. Look specifically for the words “microSD Express” and explicit Switch 2 compatibility; “high speed” or “Nintendo Switch” alone is not enough.

Nintendo-licensed cards may be available through the Nintendo Store, but licensing should not be confused with a general requirement that every compatible card carry Nintendo branding. Compatibility, authenticity, capacity, and retailer reliability matter most.

What can be stored on the supported card?

Data Original Switch microSD Switch 2 microSD Express
Downloaded games Yes Yes
Updates Generally, with some exceptions Generally, with some exceptions
DLC Yes Yes
Screenshots and videos Yes Yes
Game-save data No No

The crucial distinction is between software data and save data. Downloaded games, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos can use supported removable storage. Game saves remain in the console’s system memory, whether the game is physical or digital. Copying the contents of a microSD card to a computer therefore does not create a complete save-data backup.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

How to move games to a card

Original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Select Move Data Between System / microSD Card.
  4. Choose the software data to move.
  5. Select OK.

This can move eligible downloaded software, add-on content, and update data. It does not move save data, and some update data cannot be migrated. It is also not a permanent setting that lets you choose a custom installation location for every future update. Nintendo documents the limitations in its software-migration instructions.

Nintendo Switch 2

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Select Move System / microSD Express Card Data.
  4. Choose the data to move.
  5. Select OK.

As on the original models, save data stays in system memory, some update data may not move, and the process does not create a permanent “install everything here” preference. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 migration instructions.

What to do when your console is full

1. Install the correct card

Check the model before buying. An ordinary microSDXC card is appropriate for the original Switch family but not for Switch 2 game storage. Switch 2 needs microSD Express.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Archive or delete downloaded software

Archiving removes downloaded software while retaining its HOME Menu icon and save data, allowing the software to be downloaded again later. Deleting installed software data also normally leaves save data intact. Deleting save data is a separate action and can be irreversible, so choose the software-data option when you are only trying to free space.

  • [Environment] Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof and X-Ray proof
  • [Support] Gigastone 5-year limited warranty

Nintendo provides these storage-management options in its data-management FAQ.

3. Use physical releases when appropriate

Physical game cards can reduce the amount of game software downloaded, but they do not eliminate storage needs. Updates and DLC may still require internal or removable storage, and some physical releases require additional downloads. Switch 2 game-key cards are an especially important exception: the inserted card can authorize play while the full game data is downloaded.

4. Move to a larger card

For the original Switch family, Nintendo supports transferring the contents of one microSD card to another using a computer. Copy the entire card contents without changing the folder structure, and do not erase the old card until the new one has been tested.

  • Use one card with one console.
  • Do not merge folders from multiple cards.
  • Keep the old card intact until you verify the replacement.
  • Nintendo recommends Windows for this procedure and warns that copying may not work correctly in other environments.
  • Card software is associated with the console environment; copying it does not make it independently playable on another system.

Follow Nintendo’s microSD transfer instructions rather than treating the card as an ordinary collection of files.

5. Transfer data when changing consoles

If you are replacing the console, use Nintendo’s system-transfer tools—not a USB hard drive—to move user accounts and eligible save data. Nintendo documents both Switch-to-Switch transfers and Switch-to-Switch 2 transfers. Some games, including certain shared-save titles such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, have special requirements or exceptions.

Can a USB drive back up screenshots and videos?

Indirectly, yes. The Switch can transfer screenshots and captured videos to a computer, and that computer can then save them to an external hard drive or SSD. This is a media-archiving workflow, not direct USB storage expansion.

On the original Switch:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Select Manage Screenshots and Videos.
  4. Select Copy to a Computer via USB Connection.
  5. Connect the console directly to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.

Nintendo specifies a direct console-to-computer connection for this feature; the dock’s USB ports do not support this particular transfer. The documented workflow is intended for Windows/MTP-compatible systems, with possible limitations on other operating systems. See Nintendo’s USB media-transfer instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch 2 also provides storage-management tools for screenshots and videos, including copying media to a computer. Consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 media-management guidance for the current procedure.

Common mistakes to avoid

“My Switch has USB ports, so a hard drive should work.”
USB ports do not establish USB game-storage support. Nintendo does not support external USB drives for this purpose.
“I can use an external SSD instead of an HDD.”
Not as supported Switch game storage. The drive type does not change Nintendo’s compatibility policy.
“I’ll format the drive differently.”
Formatting cannot make an unsupported USB device compatible.
“My old Switch card should work in Switch 2.”
Not for loading or saving digital game data. An old card may be used for importing screenshots and videos, but Switch 2 game storage requires microSD Express.
“Save files are on the card with the game.”
No. Save data remains in system memory. Cloud backup through Nintendo Switch Online is available only for compatible games.
“I can combine several cards later.”
Do not rely on that. Nintendo recommends one card with one original Switch, and card contents cannot simply be merged into one card.

The practical buying decision

  • Original Switch family: buy a reputable UHS-I microSDXC card. Choose capacity based on your digital library, with 256GB or 512GB serving as reasonable practical starting points for many users.
  • Switch 2: buy a reputable microSD Express card explicitly marked for Switch 2. Do not substitute a standard microSDXC card.
  • Screenshot and video backup: use a direct USB data cable, card reader, computer storage, or an external computer drive. None of these expands game storage on the console.

Avoid suspiciously cheap cards, verify authenticity where possible, and keep receipts and return options. Nintendo’s official capacity limits and compatibility requirements matter more than a product’s headline speed or gaming-themed branding.
