If you can change the world’s game rules, use /gamerule doInsomnia false to disable phantom spawning. In ordinary survival, sleep in a bed before three in-game days pass without rest. Shelter and cats can help in specific situations, but they do not turn off the rule.
Turn off phantom spawning with a game rule
Enter /gamerule doInsomnia false in chat or the command interface. The Minecraft Wiki’s gamerule reference lists this setting for stopping phantoms, and Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes DoInsomnia as controlling effects of not sleeping, including phantom spawning. The setting disables the insomnia mechanic rather than merely protecting you from an attack.

You may need permission to use commands, depending on your world or server settings. There is no single permission procedure that applies across all platforms and servers. Use the spelling and capitalization accepted by your edition and version; examples commonly use doInsomnia or doinsomnia.
Prevent phantoms in ordinary survival
Sleep in a bed before going three in-game days without rest. Mojang says phantoms target players who have not slept for at least an hour, or three in-game days, and its phantom overview, published February 16, 2026, describes sleeping as the way to avoid the insomnia trigger. This is a recurring survival routine, not a permanent world-wide setting.

When you cannot sleep: manage the spawning conditions
The Minecraft Wiki’s community-maintained phantom-proofing tutorial describes phantoms spawning at night or during a thunderstorm, at light level 7 or less, above sea level, and 20–34 blocks above a player when skylight access is not blocked. These details may vary by version.
- Block access to the sky: A solid block overhead can prevent the described spawning conditions while you work or remain AFK.
- Stay below sea level: The tutorial identifies this as another way to avoid the listed conditions.
- Use a cat as a deterrent: Mojang says tamed cats hunt phantoms and phantoms keep their distance from cats, including cats inside buildings. This may reduce encounters, but it does not disable spawning.
Microsoft’s Bedrock references give more implementation detail: the insomnia component lists a default of three days until insomnia, while the phantom spawn-rule reference documents surface spawning and a weather-adjusted brightness filter from 0 to 7. Those are Bedrock-specific references; do not assume their exact configuration details apply to Java Edition.

If phantoms are already attacking
For an immediate encounter, hide underground until daylight or defeat the phantoms. These actions can get you through the current attack, but they do not prevent future phantom spawns. For a server-specific answer, check the server’s edition, version, and command permissions.
