Check service status first, then test your device’s connection and try low-risk fixes such as restarting the router or switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. Change router settings only after those checks.
First, check whether the problem is service-wide
When the game disconnects, check Activision’s Online Services page and the network status for your platform. Activision says a service alert or non-green status can coincide with connectivity problems. Check at the time the problem occurs: service conditions can change, and the page does not by itself establish what caused an earlier disconnect.

Also note where the failure happens—at the main menu, during matchmaking, or after a match begins—and whether other online games or services on the same device work. These clues help narrow the investigation, but they do not prove the cause. If services appear operational, continue with your own connection checks.
Test your device’s connection
PlayStation 4
Activision’s connection guide, dated October 7, 2020, directs PS4 players to Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. Menu names can change, so use the current console wording if it differs.

Xbox One
On Xbox One, the same guide directs players to Settings → Network → Test network connection. It also recommends Test multiplayer connection to investigate lag, disconnections, and other game-related network problems. If a test reports a problem, address that connection issue before changing router settings.
PC
In the game, open Account & Network and then Network Information. The screen can show connection status, NAT type, bandwidth, connection type, geographic region, and IP addresses. Activision’s PC controls and settings guide also describes server-latency and packet-loss telemetry. These readings can reveal connection symptoms, but they cannot identify on their own whether the cause is your device, home network, ISP, platform, or game service.
For PC launcher-specific connection problems, Activision’s 2020 guide points players to Battle.net or Steam troubleshooting, depending on where they play.
Try lower-risk fixes on your home network
- Restart the router. Activision recommends restarting it as an initial troubleshooting step.
- Pause competing network activity. Stop or limit downloads, video or music streaming, and other bandwidth-heavy activity on the same connection. Activision notes these can affect the ability to connect.
- Try wired Ethernet if practical. Activision Support says, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection.” This may improve connection consistency when you are currently using Wi-Fi, but it cannot resolve an Activision or platform outage.
- Test again after each change. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to see whether it affected the disconnects.
Change router settings only as a later diagnostic step
Activision’s guide gives a sequence for testing router configuration. Router interfaces vary, so consult the router documentation or your ISP if you are unsure how to make a change. Test the game after each step rather than applying several changes at once.
- Turn off port forwarding and enable UPnP.
- If the problem continues, turn off UPnP, enable port forwarding, and assign the console a static IP address.
- If it still continues, turn off port forwarding and test a DMZ configuration for a console only. After testing, remove the static IP from the router’s DMZ.

These are Activision’s listed ports, not a guaranteed fix or a reason to open ports without a specific need. The table does not distinguish console generations; check the current official reference and your router documentation before changing settings.
If you play on a school, workplace, or other shared network, contact its administrator rather than trying to change network settings yourself. If the steps do not resolve the issue on a home network, Activision recommends contacting your ISP.

Activision’s Black Ops Cold War known-issues page is marked July 7, 2023, so it is not a live outage feed. Its displayed current-issues section lists a daily-challenge tracking issue and a PC crash issue, not server disconnections. That absence does not establish that no current disconnection problem exists. The page also includes a historical resolved Zombies “Lost connection to host” issue; that note does not explain present multiplayer disconnects.
