H.265

Can I Use H.265 HEVC for a YouTube Live Playlist Stream?

YouTube Live accepts H.265 HEVC over HLS as well as RTMP/RTMPS. The encoder still has to meet YouTube’s protocol, playlist, bitrate, and—if applicable—HDR requirements.

Yes. YouTube Live accepts H.265 (HEVC) video over HLS, as well as over RTMP/RTMPS. For an HLS playlist stream, the codec is only one part of compatibility: your encoder must also produce the playlist and segments in YouTube’s required format. YouTube’s HLS setup guide lists HEVC support and the playlist requirements.

Choose HLS or RTMP/RTMPS

HLS is a segmented workflow: the encoder uploads a playlist and media segments. RTMP/RTMPS sends a continuous stream and does not use the HLS playlist contract. YouTube lists H.265 (HEVC) for both. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended RTMP option; use the protocol your encoder supports and configure the matching stream key in Live Control Room.

Decision HLS RTMP/RTMPS
HEVC support YouTube’s HLS guide explicitly supports HEVC alongside H.264. YouTube’s encoder settings list H.265 (HEVC) among supported video codecs.
What to configure HLS server URL and a compliant rolling playlist with TS segments. RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings and the matching stream key; no HLS playlist contract.
Latency Higher than continuous RTMP delivery; YouTube says ultra-low latency is unavailable for HLS. Use the latency options available for the selected stream.
HDR Supported with HEVC and correct HDR signaling; follow YouTube’s HLS output rules. Supported with HEVC when the encoder can provide the required HDR capabilities.
Best next check Confirm that the particular encoder and software can create YouTube-compliant HEVC HLS. Confirm that the encoder supports HEVC over RTMPS and apply YouTube’s current settings.

This comparison describes YouTube’s published protocol guidance, not independent testing of specific encoders. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, HLS setup, and HDR streaming guidance.

Set up an HEVC HLS stream

  1. Select the HLS protocol. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream key configured for HLS. If you use RTMP/RTMPS instead, select that protocol and use its corresponding encoder settings.
  2. Copy the HLS server URL. Use the URL shown in Live Control Room; YouTube’s HLS guidance says it begins with https. If configuring backup ingestion, use the backup URL YouTube provides. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish or share it.
  3. Configure video and audio. Set the encoder to HEVC video and use an audio codec supported by YouTube’s HLS guidance: AAC, AC3, or EAC3. Confirm the encoder is sending to the HLS endpoint rather than an RTMP endpoint.
  4. Check the HLS output. Use Transport Stream (TS) segments lasting 1–4 seconds in a rolling playlist, with no more than five outstanding segments. Do not use byte-range addressing. Send requests with HTTPS POST or PUT; YouTube does not support encryption beyond HTTPS for this workflow. These are YouTube’s published HLS requirements, not performance guarantees.
  5. Run a test before the event. Send representative motion and sound, inspect the preview in Live Control Room, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips recommend 20% headroom.

Because HLS delivers segments, it has more latency than continuous RTMP. YouTube says its ultra-low-latency option is turned off for HLS; segment duration within the supported range can affect latency.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose bitrate and keyframe settings for RTMP/RTMPS

If you use RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate entry for your codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current encoder table instead of carrying a figure over from another profile.

Configure HDR only if the source and encoder match

YouTube’s current HDR guidance says HEVC is the only supported video codec for HDR streaming. The encoder and source must also agree on HDR signal details: 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, and either ST 2084 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, as appropriate for the source. YouTube documents HDR over RTMP(S) and HLS.

For HDR over HLS, YouTube says to use an HLS stream key and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. Hardware and software encoder paths can differ, so follow the instructions for your particular encoder. YouTube names Cobalt encoders and Telestream Lightspeed Live Stream as compatible examples; that does not establish support for every model in either product line. Check the exact model’s manual and test the configured stream. See YouTube’s HDR guidance.

Validate the actual encoder and stream

  • Verify that the stream key uses the intended protocol—HLS or RTMP/RTMPS—and that the encoder is sending HEVC through that protocol.
  • Check the exact encoder model and software version for HEVC output support. A manufacturer’s support for one device or configuration does not prove that another model supports it.
  • For HLS, inspect a test playlist for TS segments, 1–4 second duration, rolling behavior, five or fewer outstanding segments, and no byte ranges.
  • For HDR, confirm the source and encoder agree on 10-bit, BT.2020, and PQ or HLG signaling.
  • Use representative audio and motion, confirm the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health before relying on the setup.

Troubleshoot common HEVC playlist problems

Symptom What to check Fix
YouTube does not accept the incoming stream. The stream key protocol may not match the encoder output, or the encoder may not support HEVC for that protocol. Select the matching HLS or RTMP/RTMPS key and verify HEVC support for the specific encoder model and software version.
HLS playlist is rejected or playback is unstable. Segment type or duration, playlist behavior, outstanding-segment count, or byte-range addressing. Use TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte ranges.
HLS delivery has more delay than expected. HLS uses segmented delivery, and YouTube does not offer ultra-low latency for HLS. Choose segment duration within YouTube’s 1–4 second range. If lower latency matters more than using HLS, consider RTMP/RTMPS if your encoder and workflow support it.
HDR appears incorrect or fails to qualify as HDR. Bit depth, color primaries or matrix, transfer characteristics, or the selected stream key may not match the source. Match 10-bit, BT.2020, and PQ or HLG to the source; for HDR HLS, use an HLS key and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked.
The preview or stream health shows a problem during testing. Audio, motion, encoder configuration, or insufficient upload headroom. Test representative content, review the preview and stream-health indicators, and leave the recommended 20% upload headroom.
