Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream using AMD AMF in OBS, start with H.264, CBR rate control, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate matched to your output resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Treat those as platform recommendations—not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream or that a particular AMF preset will look best.
Recommended AMD AMF settings for YouTube Live
These are the platform-oriented starting settings for a conventional SDR broadcast. The exact encoder labels available in OBS depend on your OBS build, AMD GPU, driver, and operating system.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder | AMD hardware H.264 encoder (AMF) | Use H.264 for a conventional SDR workflow unless you have confirmed that your intended YouTube ingest workflow, OBS build, and hardware support another codec. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s general live-encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube says keyframes should be two seconds apart and must not exceed four seconds. |
| Bitrate | Choose the YouTube recommendation for your output resolution and frame rate | A 1080p60 stream and a 1080p30 stream have different recommended bitrates. |
| Output resolution and frame rate | Match the broadcast you intend to deliver | Both affect the bitrate budget; do not choose a bitrate independently of them. |
| Protocol | RTMPS when available in the YouTube/OBS setup | YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure live-ingest protocol. |
YouTube’s current H.264 table lists these recommended ingest bitrates. The values below are YouTube recommendations, not measured guarantees of visual quality or connection stability.
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps |
For resolutions or frame rates not listed here, use YouTube’s full current H.264 table rather than extrapolating. YouTube also lists lower minimums; its recommendations are not minimum requirements. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, and test the real output before relying on it.

Set up OBS and connect your YouTube stream
- Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or select your stream, and copy its stream key and server URL. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Enter the ingest details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the YouTube service if it is available, then connect your account or enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. OBS labels and connection choices can vary by version. Do not share or show the key on stream.
- Select the AMD encoder. Open Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if necessary, then choose the AMD hardware H.264 encoder in the streaming encoder field. The displayed name and available options vary with the installed OBS build, GPU, driver, and operating system. If the AMD option is absent, check OBS’s compatible-GPU information and whether your installed system exposes a supported encoder.
- Set live rate control and keyframes. In the streaming encoder options, select CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and enter the YouTube-recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you selected. The location and wording of these controls can differ between OBS versions.
- Set the broadcast resolution and frame rate. In OBS Settings → Video, set the output resolution and frames per second to the values you intend to send. If you use a separate scaled output resolution, verify it too; the bitrate recommendation must correspond to the actual stream output.
- Run a representative test. Make the test private or unlisted if appropriate, and include audio and movement similar to your actual broadcast. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and its messages during the event. In OBS, check View → Stats for dropped frames or encoder overload. Menu names can vary by version.
Choose bitrate and frame rate for your connection
Use YouTube’s recommended value as a target only if your upload connection can sustain it. A speed test gives a useful indication of available upload capacity, but it does not replace a live test: other devices, network congestion, and changes in connection quality can affect delivery. Leave practical headroom rather than planning to consume all available upload bandwidth with the stream.
When choosing between 1080p30 and 1080p60, weigh motion smoothness against the additional bitrate demand. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264. Higher output resolutions and frame rates also have higher recommended bitrates in the table above. If the connection cannot sustain the recommendation consistently, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and use the matching recommendation instead of keeping a high output setting with an unsuitable bitrate.

CBR for live streaming is not OBS’s AMD CQP recording recipe
OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide documents an AMD recording baseline of CQP rate control, CQ 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, Quality preset, High profile, and Max B-frames 0. That guide is about recording. Its CQP/CQ values are not a YouTube Live bitrate recipe: for YouTube live ingest, use CBR and a bitrate matched to the stream’s resolution and frame rate.
Do not assume that one AMF preset is universally best. OBS’s documented values provide a recording reference, but they do not establish a single optimal live preset across GPU generations, drivers, operating systems, and OBS releases. Use the options your encoder exposes, then validate the actual stream for stability and acceptable picture quality.

When the standard SDR settings do not apply: HDR
HDR uses a separate YouTube workflow, not the SDR H.264 baseline above. YouTube’s OBS HDR instructions describe using a hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions. Follow the HDR-specific setup and the stream-key protocol requirements shown for that workflow, and confirm that your GPU, driver, and OBS build expose the required encoder and color options.
YouTube supports live input using RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among its video codecs. That does not mean every combination is available on every AMD system or that the H.264 bitrate table applies unchanged to another codec. Confirm the relevant YouTube ingest workflow and local encoder support before switching codecs.

Troubleshoot common AMD AMF streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| AMD encoder is missing from OBS | GPU, driver, OBS build, operating system, or encoder compatibility | Check OBS’s compatible-GPU information, update or repair the relevant graphics driver and OBS installation, and confirm that the system supports an AMD hardware encoder. Options are hardware- and version-dependent. |
| YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health | Upload capacity, bitrate, or network consistency | Check OBS Stats for dropped frames, compare the bitrate with the connection’s reliable upload capacity, and test at a lower matching resolution or frame rate if needed. |
| OBS reports encoder overload | Encoder workload or system configuration | Check OBS Stats during representative gameplay or capture. Reduce demanding output settings and test again; available AMF controls and their impact vary by GPU and OBS version. |
| Video looks soft, blocky, or uneven | Bitrate relative to output, motion, and connection stability | Verify that the configured bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for the actual output resolution and frame rate. Test with movement similar to the broadcast; if the connection cannot sustain the target, lower output settings and use their corresponding bitrate. |
| Stream cannot connect or the wrong broadcast receives it | Server URL, stream key, or selected YouTube event | Recheck that OBS is using the server URL and key for the intended Live Control Room stream. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS. |
| HDR image has incorrect colors or does not appear as HDR | SDR settings applied to HDR, or missing HEVC/color-format support | Use YouTube’s separate HDR instructions and verify HEVC, Main 10, P010, and the selected Rec. 2100 color space are supported and configured consistently. |
