In current vanilla Minecraft, a lit redstone torch usually stops most hostile Overworld mobs from spawning on the blocks it lights: the torch emits light level 7, while most hostile mobs need light level 0. But it will not protect an entire room or cave—the light fades with distance, and dark spawnable blocks may remain. In pre-1.18 versions, redstone torches were not enough.
Why a redstone torch can prevent spawns in current versions
Minecraft checks the light at the place where a mob would spawn. The official first-night guide says most hostile mobs appear only when the light level reaches 0 in an area close to the player. Microsoft’s Bedrock block light-emission reference lists a redstone torch at light level 7. On blocks that receive that light, the ordinary light-level-0 condition is therefore not met.
This describes most hostile Overworld mobs, not every mob or every spawning mechanism. Other requirements—such as whether a block is a valid spawn surface—still apply.
Why one torch may not spawn-proof a room
Light decreases by one level for each block of distance from its source, as described in the Minecraft Wiki light guide. The torch’s level 7 is not spread across every block in a space. Check the darkest blocks where mobs could actually spawn, rather than judging safety from how bright the torch’s own block looks.

- Place lights so their coverage reaches the floor and other valid spawn surfaces.
- Inspect corners, ledges, alcoves, and blocks farther from the torch; those may still reach light level 0.
- Remember that blocking a spawn location with a non-spawnable surface is a separate way to prevent spawning; illumination is not the only condition.
What changed in versions before 1.18
In pre-1.18 versions, hostile mobs could spawn at light level 7 or lower, according to the Minecraft Wiki spawn guide. Since a redstone torch emits level 7, it did not reliably prevent those spawns. The current light-level-0 rule should not be applied to an older world or server version without checking its rules.
For Bedrock, Mojang’s 1.17.30 release notes announced that monsters now spawn only in complete darkness. For Java’s historical threshold, the version distinction cited here is documented by the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki.

Vanilla rules and custom Bedrock content
Custom Bedrock entity spawn rules can define brightness filters, as described in Microsoft’s spawn-filter reference. Add-ons and other custom content may therefore use different brightness thresholds from vanilla behavior.
