Sometimes—but only when the specific Ubisoft game supports crossplay between the players’ platforms and the mode they want to play. Steam and Ubisoft Connect are storefronts, not a universal multiplayer bridge. Ubisoft says crossplay availability varies by game and platform, and a Ubisoft account is required for crossplay features. Check Ubisoft’s general guidance and the game’s own support page before buying or inviting a friend.
What does “Steam and Ubisoft players” mean?
This usually means two people playing the PC version of the same game: one launches it through Steam and the other through Ubisoft Connect. The storefronts alone do not determine whether they can join each other. The game must support the relevant crossplay arrangement, and its own friend or invite system may be needed.
If one player is on a console, check that exact PC-to-console combination rather than assuming that PC crossplay covers every platform. Support can also differ by game mode.
How to check whether you can play together
- Identify the exact game, edition, platforms, and mode. “Ubisoft game” is not specific enough to establish compatibility; check whether both players are on PC or whether one is on a console, and name the mode you plan to play.
- Open that game’s current official crossplay or platform-support page. Confirm that it lists both players’ platforms and the intended mode. Ubisoft’s general support guidance says availability varies between games and platforms.
- Check account requirements. Ubisoft says a Ubisoft account is needed for crossplay and cross-progression features. Its account-linking guidance says linking a platform account to a Ubisoft account enables available features where supported: Ubisoft account-linking guidance.
- Use the game’s stated friend and invite workflow. Do not assume a Steam invite by itself will reach someone playing through Ubisoft Connect; follow the title’s instructions, which may use Ubisoft accounts or in-game friends.
- Check ownership and progress separately. Crossplay means playing together; cross-progression means carrying progress between supported platforms. They are different features. Ubisoft notes that access to progress may require owning the game on each platform, so check the title’s rules before switching platforms.
Why one Ubisoft game does not prove another supports crossplay
Ubisoft’s For Honor FAQ described cross-platform matchmaking in an initial phase and a later phase for grouping with cross-platform friends. The FAQ, dated September 13, 2022, said Phase 2 was scheduled for October 20, 2022. Those details describe that game’s rollout, not a standard that applies to other Ubisoft titles. See the For Honor Crossplay Phase 2 FAQ; consult its current in-game or support information for present setup details.

Account and purchase behavior can also be title-specific. For example, Ubisoft’s help page for The Division Resurgence explains using Steam or Ubisoft Connect to play that game and says purchases are associated with the Ubisoft Connect account used at purchase. That is not evidence of a general crossplay rule. See The Division Resurgence PC help page.

What to do if you still cannot join a friend
- Recheck that the game supports the exact platform pairing and mode; a general crossplay option may not cover every mode.
- Confirm each player is signed in to the required Ubisoft account and that any necessary platform-account linking is complete.
- Send the invite using the game’s specified cross-platform friend system, not an assumed storefront-only method.
- Look for title-specific restrictions or setup instructions in the game’s current support page or crossplay settings. Without the game title, the exact compatibility verdict and troubleshooting steps cannot be established.
