The Epilogue GB Operator can play original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges through the Playback app on a computer, and it can back up game and save data. It does not send video directly to a TV over HDMI. To see a game on a television, connect the computer running Playback to the TV; for a dedicated TV console, consider a separate option such as RetroN Sq.

What the GB Operator does

The GB Operator is a cartridge-reading device that connects to a computer by USB-A-to-USB-C cable and works with Epilogue’s Playback desktop app. Playback runs games from original cartridges on the computer and provides tools for preserving and managing cartridge data. Epilogue lists support for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Micro, and the Game Boy Camera. Epilogue’s GB Operator support page describes these features.

  • Play original cartridges through Playback on a computer.
  • Back up game data and cartridge saves to a computer or hard drive.
  • Create automatic save backups, according to Epilogue’s Playback documentation.
  • Restore save data from a computer to a cartridge.
  • Download Game Boy Camera photos as PNG files.
  • Check cartridge authenticity; Playback also supports writing homebrew games to rewritable cartridges.

These are capabilities documented by Epilogue, not independently tested results.

Can you play cartridges on a TV with it?

Not directly. Epilogue’s GB Operator FAQ says, “No, the GB Operator does not output video via HDMI.” The device is a cartridge interface for a computer, not a TV console or HDMI adapter. See the official GB Operator FAQ.

You can use the TV as a larger display by connecting the computer that is running Playback to the television. Epilogue describes Playback as the app for playing cartridges on a computer in its Playback documentation.

When RetroN Sq may be a better fit

If your main requirement is to insert a cartridge into a dedicated device and play on a TV, RetroN Sq is a separate product to investigate. RetroMagazine reports that it plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on a television at up to 720p, and a retailer listing also names those cartridge families as compatible. Those sources do not establish that every game works, nor do they settle current availability or how its save handling compares with the GB Operator. See RetroMagazine’s RetroN Sq review and the retailer product listing.

What you need GB Operator with Playback RetroN Sq
Play cartridges on a computer Yes; this is the documented setup. Not established by the cited sources.
Direct TV output No HDMI output; a computer connected to a TV can display Playback. TV play is reported by RetroMagazine, up to 720p.
Back up and restore cartridge saves Epilogue documents backup and save restoration. Save backup and restoration behavior is not stated in the cited sources.
Game Boy generations Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance; support documentation also lists Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Micro, and Game Boy Camera. Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance are listed by the cited review and retailer.
Reproduction-cartridge reliability Epilogue says compatibility is unpredictable for unlicensed and reproduction carts. Not established by the cited sources.

Which cartridges are compatible?

Epilogue says the GB Operator supports all officially licensed Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games, including cartridges from all regions. That claim is about officially licensed games; it is not a guarantee for every cartridge that fits the slot. Epilogue’s compatibility guidance says unlicensed and reproduction cartridges can behave unpredictably because they may use different hardware.

Cartridge condition can also matter. Epilogue advises cleaning cartridge pins and contacting support if an officially licensed game does not work. A reproduction cart that fails is not necessarily evidence that the device cannot read licensed games, and the manufacturer does not promise consistent results across reproduction hardware.

Choosing between computer play and backup

Choose the GB Operator if you want to use original cartridges on a computer, make digital copies of game or save data, or move a backed-up save back to a cartridge. Choose a direct-TV console route if using a computer is not acceptable; RetroN Sq is one documented candidate, but check its current support and compatibility information for the particular games and saves you care about.
