1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYes—the ROG Xbox Ally X can run demanding Windows PC games. The important qualification is that “run” may mean 30–60 frames per second with a reduced preset, lower render resolution, or upscaling rather than native 1080p at high or ultra settings. Recent tests show the range clearly: Cyberpunk 2077 reached 28 frames per second at 1080p Ultra with FSR disabled in Notebookcheck’s test, while the same game reached 49.5 frames per second at 1080p Low in 35W Turbo. Alan Wake 2 was playable only after a particularly aggressive resolution reduction and FSR2 reconstruction in Tom’s Hardware’s review.
What “run demanding games” means on this handheld
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) is a Windows 11 gaming handheld built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. It can install and launch the same broad categories of PC games available on a Windows computer, but its integrated graphics share power and thermal headroom with the handheld’s processor. A demanding game therefore needs a realistic target: stable play at a sensible image quality, not automatically 1080p Ultra at 60 or 120 frames per second.

There are three useful standards:
- Launches: the game starts and accepts input. This says little about frame rate or image quality.
- Playable: performance is consistent enough for the genre, even if the target is 30 or 40 frames per second and settings are reduced.
- High-quality 60 fps: the game holds approximately 60 frames per second at attractive settings and resolution. This is not guaranteed for recent AAA releases.
Open-world games with advanced lighting and dense crowds are the most likely to require compromises. Less graphically extreme or strongly art-directed games generally leave more performance headroom.

ASUS lists a 7-inch 1920×1080 touchscreen, a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium, and an 80Wh battery. The screen can refresh at 120Hz, but that is a panel capability rather than a promise that a demanding game will render 120 frames per second. The integrated GPU may deliver far fewer frames at native 1080p in a modern title.

The Xbox-oriented full-screen interface is a Windows shell: ASUS describes powering directly into the Xbox full-screen experience and opening Game Bar with the Xbox button. The underlying operating system remains Windows, so game files, launchers, drivers, anti-cheat systems, and background updates can affect behavior just as they do on a small Windows PC.
ASUS performance comparisons
ASUS compares the Xbox Ally X with the earlier ROG Ally X using 1080p output, default in-game graphics, Turbo mode, and plugged-in power. Those are manufacturer measurements under a stated test setup, not a universal result for every owner.
| Game | ROG Xbox Ally X | Previous ROG Ally X | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | 46 fps average | 37 fps average | 1080p, default settings, Turbo, plugged in |
| Doom: The Dark Ages | 35 fps average | 25 fps average | 1080p, default settings, Turbo, plugged in |
| Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | 42 fps average | 34 fps average | 1080p, default settings, Turbo, plugged in |
These figures indicate a meaningful uplift over the previous model in ASUS’s selected tests, but they also show why a 30–45 fps expectation is more realistic than assuming 60 fps in every new release.
Independent benchmark results and what they show
Notebookcheck reported a 14% advantage over the previous Ally X across its standard gaming benchmark suite. An aggregate percentage hides large title-by-title differences, so the individual results are more useful for setting expectations.
| Game and setting | Observed result | Test details |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 28 fps | 1920×1080 Ultra, FSR off |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | 32.5 fps | 1920×1080 Ultra |
| Strange Brigade | 58.8 fps | 1920×1080 Ultra |
Notebookcheck also measured Cyberpunk 2077 at several presets in a 35W Turbo test with FSR disabled:

| High, 1080p | 31.9 fps | 35W Turbo, FSR off |
| Ultra, 1080p | 28 fps | 35W Turbo, FSR off |
The progression is the practical lesson: reducing the preset can move a demanding game from the high-20s into the high-40s, while Ultra settings can remain below 30 fps. These are results from Notebookcheck’s hardware, firmware, drivers, and test scene; they are not guaranteed frame rates for every unit.
Alan Wake 2 illustrates the image-quality trade-off
Tom’s Hardware reported that Alan Wake 2, which its reviewer could not run on handhelds using the older Z1 Extreme platform, did run on the Xbox Ally X. The test used 720p display output, a 640×360 performance render resolution, and FSR2. In the tested open-world scene, frame rate varied between 32 and 53 fps; a subway section reached a 60 fps cap.
Recommended Free Tools
The reviewer considered the image very blurry at those render settings. This is an important distinction: technical compatibility does not mean the game looks good at the settings needed to maintain performance. A player who accepts a 30–40 fps target or a softer image may find the game usable; someone requiring crisp native 1080p should not.
The same review measured Shadow of the Tomb Raider at medium settings in DirectX 12. Plugged in, it reached 64 fps at 720p and 45 fps at 1080p. Unplugged, it reached 79 fps at 720p and 52 fps at 1080p. Because power state changes the result, those numbers should not be compared without preserving the stated plugged-in or battery condition.

- Update Windows, Armoury Crate, chipset and graphics drivers. Driver and game patches can change shader compilation, support, and performance. Restart before benchmarking so pending updates are not running in the background.
- Choose a power mode deliberately. For a plugged-in test, start with Turbo if noise and heat are acceptable. On battery, use a lower mode when runtime matters; do not treat plugged-in benchmark numbers as portable performance.
- Set a sensible output resolution. Try 1920×1080 first, then 1600×900 or 1280×720 if the frame rate is too low. Lowering render resolution often helps more than disabling small visual effects.
- Reduce the expensive settings first. Lower ray tracing, global illumination, volumetric fog, shadows, reflections, crowd density, and view distance before texture quality. Texture settings are often limited by memory capacity rather than raw shader speed.
- Enable the game’s upscaler. FSR2 or a comparable temporal upscaler can raise performance by rendering internally below the display resolution. Select Quality or Balanced before Performance; the Alan Wake 2 example demonstrates that very low internal resolutions can become visibly blurry.
- Set a frame-rate cap. A stable 30, 40, or 45 fps can feel better than an unstable result that repeatedly jumps between 35 and 60. Match the cap to what the game can sustain in its heaviest areas.
- Test a representative difficult scene. A quiet corridor can hide a problem that appears in a city, battle, or open-world traversal section. Record the resolution, preset, power mode, upscaler, and whether the device was plugged in.
Windows Central recommends trying AMD HYPR-RX and its associated game features for demanding titles. Treat those features as optional tuning tools: they may help in a particular game, but they do not guarantee an improvement, and generated frames are not equivalent to the same number of natively rendered frames.

Compatibility: Windows access is broad, not universal
The Xbox Ally X is not running Xbox-console editions of games. It is a Windows handheld with an Xbox-focused interface. ASUS describes access to a Windows game catalog, and TechRadar specifically lists Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG support.
Before buying or installing a particular title, check four items:
- PC system requirements: compare the game’s minimum and recommended GPU, CPU, memory, and storage requirements with the handheld’s configuration.
- Launcher behavior: verify that the required launcher signs in correctly and does not depend on a desktop-only dialog that is difficult to operate with a controller.
- Controller support: confirm that the game recognizes an XInput controller and that menus are usable without a mouse and keyboard. Community layouts may be needed for older releases.
- Anti-cheat and services: multiplayer games can require kernel-level anti-cheat, secure-boot settings, or background services. Support can change after a game update, so check the publisher’s current notes.
No single compatibility label can cover every PC title. A game can launch but still have broken controller prompts, a launcher conflict, shader stutter, or an anti-cheat restriction.

FreeSync Premium can help the display track variable frame rates, reducing tearing when a game is not locked to a fixed refresh interval. It cannot create additional GPU performance. A 120Hz panel is useful for lighter games that can exceed 60 fps, but demanding releases in the cited tests commonly stayed below 60 fps at 1080p high or ultra settings.

The 80Wh battery is large for a handheld, yet capacity alone cannot predict runtime. A demanding game raises CPU and GPU power draw; brightness, wireless radios, frame cap, refresh rate, and selected power mode also matter. ASUS’s comparisons distinguish Turbo and plugged-in operation, but they do not establish one dependable battery-runtime figure for all AAA games. Expect shorter sessions at maximum performance than in low-power or 2D games.
Is it a good fit for your game library?
| Your priority | Likely experience | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Indie, older, or art-directed games | Often the easiest category for high settings and high frame rates | Controller mapping and launcher behavior |
| Recent AAA at 30–45 fps | Generally realistic with a reduced preset, lower resolution, or upscaling | Worst-case scenes, not only built-in benchmarks |
| Native 1080p High at 60 fps | Title-dependent and unlikely in the heaviest releases | Independent tests with matching settings |
| Ultra settings with ray tracing | Usually requires substantial compromises or a lower frame-rate target | Whether the game offers a useful upscaler and scalable lighting options |
| Competitive multiplayer | Performance may be adequate, but software compatibility is decisive | Anti-cheat, secure-boot requirements, input support, and frame-time consistency |
When comparing benchmarks, match the game version, resolution, graphics preset, power mode, plugged-in state, upscaler, and frame-rate cap. A single “fps” number without those conditions is not a reliable buying guide.
Storage upgrades and practical ownership notes
ASUS states that the internal drive is upgradeable with an off-the-shelf drive. The available evidence does not establish a specific replacement or expansion model, so confirm the exact form factor, single-sided or double-sided clearance, capacity support, and installation procedure before purchasing a drive. Large modern games can consume substantial space, making storage planning important even when graphics performance is sufficient.
Also allow time for shader compilation, Windows updates, launcher updates, and game patches. These can temporarily increase CPU use or cause stutter on first launch without indicating a permanent hardware problem.

Bottom line for demanding PC games
The ROG Xbox Ally X is capable of running demanding Windows games, and its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme gives it a measurable advantage over the earlier ROG Ally X in ASUS’s comparisons. The realistic promise is flexible handheld play: many games can reach a stable 30–60 fps after tuning, while the newest and most demanding releases may need lower render resolutions, aggressive upscaling, or reduced presets. Cyberpunk 2077’s 28 fps at 1080p Ultra and 49.5 fps at 1080p Low, plus Alan Wake 2’s 640×360 FSR2 test, show why “can it run?” must be answered together with “at what settings and image quality?”
Check each game’s current requirements, launcher, controller, and anti-cheat support, then judge results using tests that disclose power mode and rendering settings. Firmware, drivers, and patches can change the outcome over time.
