| Operating system | Windows 11 Home | SteamOS |
| Processor platform | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | 6nm APU |
| Memory and storage | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000; 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe | 512GB or 1TB OLED configurations |
| Display | 7-inch, 1920×1080, up to 120Hz, variable refresh rate | 7.4-inch, 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz |
| Battery information | Windows Central measured 1 hour 53 minutes in Cyberpunk 2077 on a tested unit reported with an 80Wh battery | Valve estimates 3–12 hours, depending on the content; battery capacity is 50Wh |
| Game access | Xbox and other PC storefronts, Windows launchers, and selected Game Pass downloads or cloud streams | Steam library, filtered through Valve’s compatibility ratings and Proton support |
The headline specification advantage does not automatically produce a better picture or longer runtime. The Ally X drives four times as many pixels as the Deck OLED’s 1280×800 mode, so a fair performance comparison must name the resolution and graphics settings. The Deck’s OLED panel can look more vivid even though its resolution and refresh ceiling are lower.

How the hardware changes game performance
Ally X has more published headroom
AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and 24GB of fast LPDDR5X-8000 memory give the Ally X a higher stated ceiling than the Steam Deck OLED’s older 6nm APU platform. That extra headroom is most useful in demanding games, CPU-heavy simulations, large open worlds, and titles where Windows features or modern graphics APIs are required. It also gives the device more room to target a higher frame rate when connected to a 1080p display.

More hardware does not mean every game will run at 120 frames per second. A handheld’s result depends on its power profile, thermal limits, resolution, upscaling, ray tracing, frame-rate cap, and the game’s own engine. At 1080p, the Ally X is rendering substantially more pixels than the Deck OLED renders at 800p. A game that appears faster on the Ally X at its native resolution might deliver a similar practical experience to a lower-resolution Deck setting once both are configured for comparable image quality.
What ASUS’s FPS figures do—and do not—show
ASUS publishes average in-game FPS comparisons for the 2025 RC73XA Xbox Ally X against the previous RC72LA ROG Ally X. The listed tests use 1080p, default graphics, and RSR/FSR disabled; the page distinguishes a plugged-in 35W Turbo mode from a battery 17W Performance mode. Those details matter because a 35W result cannot be treated as a battery result, and an average FPS number does not describe frame-time consistency or image quality.
That table is not a Steam Deck OLED benchmark. It uses a different product, operating system, display target, and test setup. Use it to understand how ASUS positions the new Ally X against its predecessor, not to calculate a percentage advantage over Valve’s handheld.

PC Gamer described the Xbox Ally X as the fastest handheld gaming PC it had tested at the time of its review and discussed performance at the 17W preset. That is a reviewer’s finding from its own test set, not a controlled Ally X-versus-Deck OLED benchmark. It supports the conclusion that the Ally X has substantial performance potential, but it does not establish a universal FPS multiplier.
How to compare a particular game fairly
- Run the same game build on both devices, including the same patch and graphics API where the game allows a choice.
- Set a common render resolution or use each device’s native resolution while recording the choice. A 1920×1080 test and a 1280×800 test answer different questions.
- Use the same upscaler state. ASUS’s cited table turns RSR/FSR off; turning an upscaler on for only one device invalidates a direct comparison.
- Record the power mode. The Ally X’s 35W plugged-in Turbo and 17W battery Performance presets are not equivalent workloads.
- Apply the same frame-rate cap and measure frame-time stability, not only the average. A locked 40 or 60 FPS can feel better than a fluctuating higher average.
- Check temperatures, fan behavior, and whether the device is plugged in. Sustained performance can change as the handheld reaches its thermal limits.
For a demanding new release, the Ally X is the safer choice when you want the option to trade battery life for more performance. The Deck OLED can still be the better experience when the game is well supported by SteamOS and its 800p target lets you use a stable frame-rate cap.
Display: 1080p 120Hz LCD versus 800p HDR OLED
| Display characteristic | ROG Xbox Ally X | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Panel size | 7 inches | 7.4 inches |
| Resolution | 1920×1080 (Full HD) | 1280×800 |
| Maximum refresh rate | 120Hz | 90Hz |
| Variable refresh | Yes, according to Xbox’s specification | Not stated in the cited product specification |
| HDR | Not stated in the cited Xbox specification | HDR OLED |
The Ally X’s 120Hz ceiling and variable refresh rate are valuable when a game moves between frame rates. VRR can reduce visible tearing and make uneven performance feel smoother within its supported range. The 1080p panel also gives text and desktop applications more workspace, although driving that many pixels can increase GPU load.
The Deck OLED’s advantages are panel type, size, and HDR support. OLED pixels can switch quickly and produce deep blacks, while HDR can add highlight and contrast range in games that support it. Its 1280×800 resolution is less demanding, which can help a modest APU maintain a consistent frame rate. Resolution, refresh rate, and panel type measure different things; none of them alone proves overall image quality.

Steam Deck OLED’s official range
Valve lists 3–12 hours of gameplay for the Steam Deck OLED and explicitly says duration depends on the content. That range covers very different workloads: a light 2D game, a capped indie title, and a demanding 3D release do not draw power at the same rate. The Deck OLED’s listed battery capacity is 50Wh.
The available Ally X test
Windows Central reported 1 hour 53 minutes for the Xbox Ally X in a Cyberpunk 2077 battery test. The same comparison gave the prior ROG Ally X 2 hours 10 minutes; the article identified both tested devices as having 80Wh batteries. This is a single-game review comparison between two ROG devices, not a Steam Deck OLED result.
| Figure | What it represents | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| 3–12 hours | Valve’s current Steam Deck OLED gameplay estimate; content dependent | A guaranteed runtime for a specific game or a direct Ally X comparison |
| 1:53 | Windows Central’s Cyberpunk 2077 result for Xbox Ally X; tested units reported with 80Wh batteries | Typical runtime across all games or performance against Steam Deck OLED |
| 2:10 | Windows Central’s Cyberpunk 2077 result for the previous ROG Ally X | The newer Ally X’s advantage or disadvantage over Deck OLED |
No cited source provides a controlled Ally X-versus-Deck OLED test using the same game, brightness, frame-rate limit, resolution, operating mode, and measurement method. It would be misleading to place 1:53 beside 3–12 hours and call one device the battery winner.

How to run your own useful battery comparison
- Choose one repeatable game scene or benchmark and use the same save point.
- Set equal display brightness by measurement or by matching a defined slider position, then record whether HDR is enabled.
- Choose a common frame-rate cap and synchronize refresh settings as closely as the devices permit.
- Use a documented power mode on each handheld. Note whether the Ally X is in 17W Performance or a higher plugged-in profile.
- Disable background downloads and close launchers that are not needed for the test.
- Start at the same battery percentage and stop at the same low-battery threshold. Record elapsed time, average FPS, and any thermal throttling.
For travel planning, treat the Deck OLED’s estimate as a broad content-dependent guideline and the Cyberpunk figure as evidence that a demanding Windows game can empty an Ally-class 80Wh system in roughly two hours under review conditions. Neither number predicts every title.

Steam Deck OLED: four ratings, not a guarantee
Valve reviews Steam titles and labels them Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown. Verified means the game works well out of the box. Playable means it works but may require adjustments. Unsupported means it is currently not functional on Deck, while Unknown means Valve has not completed a review.
| Rating | Practical meaning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Expected to work out of the box | Whether a recent update changed behavior and whether your preferred controls match the tested setup |
| Playable | Works with one or more user adjustments | Text entry, on-screen keyboard, graphics settings, launcher steps, or controller mapping |
| Unsupported | Currently does not function as expected on Steam Deck | Whether a later game, Proton, or system update changed the rating |
| Unknown | Not yet checked by Valve | Community reports and the game’s own requirements before buying |
Valve’s checks cover input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Proton and anti-cheat support are part of the system-side assessment. Ratings can change as games, updates, and the device software change; a badge is a current signal, not a permanent promise. The review program is ongoing across the large and continually changing Steam catalog.
Ally X: Windows breadth with title-specific caveats
The Ally X ships with Windows 11 Home, so it can run supported games from Xbox and other PC storefronts and use their native launchers. Xbox also describes an Xbox Handheld Compatibility program for the Ally family. This is a broader storefront model than SteamOS, but Windows does not make every game effortless: launchers, drivers, anti-cheat systems, overlays, controller mappings, and account requirements still determine whether a title works well.
Xbox describes Game Pass as offering included games to download or stream, plus select owned games. Cloud gaming requires a subscription and applies only to selected games. A cloud-only title is not an offline installation, and a game included in a catalog can leave that catalog. Check the current listing and whether the game is downloadable before relying on it for travel.
Multiplayer and anti-cheat should decide the purchase
If your main games use kernel-level or otherwise platform-sensitive anti-cheat, verify the developer’s current support statement for SteamOS before choosing the Deck OLED. A game can be popular on Steam and still receive an Unsupported rating because its anti-cheat or launcher does not work through Proton. On Windows, compatibility is often broader, but the game may still require an online account, a specific launcher, or an update before it will start.
A title-by-title compatibility checklist
- List the exact games, not just the storefront you use.
- For Steam games, read the current Deck rating and the reasons behind it rather than relying only on the color badge.
- For Windows or Xbox games, verify the launcher, account, controller, and anti-cheat requirements.
- Determine whether the desired Game Pass title is downloadable, streamable, or unavailable in your region and subscription tier.
- Check whether multiplayer requires an anti-cheat service that supports the selected operating system.
- Recheck after major game or operating-system updates; compatibility status can change.
Software experience: Windows flexibility versus SteamOS focus
Why Windows helps on the Ally X
Windows gives the Ally X a familiar PC environment and direct access to multiple launchers. That is useful when your library is divided between Xbox, Steam, Epic, publisher launchers, and other PC stores. It also makes Windows-specific utilities and peripherals easier to use. The trade-off is that a desktop operating system can require more pointer input, updates, launcher sign-ins, and power-management decisions than a console-style interface.
The Ally X’s handheld experience still depends on how well each launcher handles controller navigation and resume. A title may launch correctly yet expose a small desktop window, a software keyboard, or a sign-in prompt that is awkward on a seven-inch screen.
Why SteamOS helps on the Deck OLED
SteamOS concentrates the experience around the Steam library, controller navigation, and a console-like sleep/wake flow. Valve describes pressing the power button to suspend the game and put the device to sleep, then pressing it again to resume where you left off. That behavior is particularly convenient for short sessions and commuting.
SteamOS is not a promise that every Steam title behaves like a console game. Playable ratings may require tweaks, and Unsupported or Unknown titles can involve troubleshooting. The benefit is that Valve surfaces compatibility information in the store and system interface instead of leaving every decision to a Windows desktop.

Storage and expansion
The Ally X includes 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. Steam Deck OLED is sold in 512GB and 1TB configurations. Modern PC games can consume a large part of either internal drive, especially when shader caches, language packs, and multiple launchers are installed.
Both product families support microSD expansion according to their respective product information. A card is useful for a secondary library, older games, emulation files, or media, but it does not remove the need to check load times, install sizes, and free space. Keep frequently played, storage-heavy games on the internal SSD when loading performance matters.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when these priorities dominate
- Your must-play list includes Windows-only launchers, Xbox PC titles, or multiplayer games whose anti-cheat support is uncertain on SteamOS.
- You want the option to run demanding games at higher power settings and have more memory headroom.
- You prefer a 1080p, 120Hz panel with variable refresh rate for desktop clarity and fluctuating frame rates.
- You want one handheld that can access several PC storefronts without installing another operating system.
- You are comfortable managing Windows updates, launchers, sign-ins, and per-game power profiles.
Choose the Steam Deck OLED when these priorities dominate
- Most of your games are on Steam and have a favorable current Deck rating.
- You value the 7.4-inch HDR OLED display, deep blacks, and a 90Hz ceiling more than 1080p resolution.
- You want SteamOS’s integrated library interface and simple suspend/resume behavior.
- You prefer a lower native resolution that can reduce rendering demand in supported games.
- You are willing to check Playable notes and avoid or troubleshoot titles with Unsupported or Unknown status.
Use this tie-breaker for mixed libraries
Start with the three games you would be most disappointed to leave behind. If any requires a Windows launcher or anti-cheat system that does not support SteamOS, the Ally X removes the larger compatibility risk. If all three are Steam titles with Verified or well-documented Playable ratings and you care most about the screen and suspend flow, the Deck OLED is the more coherent choice.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the highest refresh rate as guaranteed FPS
A 120Hz panel can display up to 120 refreshes per second, but the game and power mode must produce matching frames. Use a stable cap appropriate to the title rather than buying on the refresh number alone.
Mistake: comparing battery figures from different tests
Do not compare Valve’s content-dependent 3–12-hour estimate with the Windows Central Cyberpunk result as if both were laboratory measurements. Workload, brightness, frame cap, resolution, and power mode can move runtime substantially.
Mistake: assuming Windows means universal compatibility
Windows broadens launcher access but does not waive anti-cheat, account, driver, or service requirements. Confirm the exact game and its current online requirements.
Mistake: assuming Verified means every Steam game works
Verified applies to reviewed titles that meet Valve’s criteria. Other titles can be Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown, and ratings can change after updates.
Mistake: buying for a subscription catalog without checking availability
Game Pass contents and cloud eligibility are title-specific. Confirm that the game is included for your subscription, available in your region, and downloadable if you need offline play.
Bottom line for performance, battery, and compatibility
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the stronger choice for demanding Windows gaming and mixed storefront libraries, backed by its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB memory, 1TB SSD, and 1080p 120Hz VRR display. The Steam Deck OLED is the better fit for a Steam-centered library and buyers who prioritize its HDR OLED panel and SteamOS suspend/resume experience.
Do not declare a battery-life winner from the currently available figures: Valve’s 3–12-hour estimate is content dependent, while the 1-hour-53-minute Ally X result is a single Cyberpunk 2077 review test under conditions that are not matched to the Deck OLED. Your specific games, launchers, anti-cheat requirements, and preferred screen experience should decide the purchase.
