Yes in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, if both Miis’ dating preferences allow it; no in the original Nintendo 3DS game. The distinction matters because the newer game adds gender and dating-preference settings that the 3DS version did not have.
Can two boys date in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?
Yes. In Nintendo’s FAQ for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, players can set a Mii’s gender to Male, Female, or Non-Binary, and choose dating preferences from those same options. Preferences can include more than one choice, or none. Nintendo says, “Depending on the gender and dating preference you set, Miis may fall in love with one another.” Set each boy’s dating preferences to include the other’s gender, and they can become a couple; the settings make it possible, but do not guarantee that any particular pair will fall in love. Gender and dating preferences are separate settings
A Mii’s gender and the genders they can date are distinct choices. For two male Miis to be eligible to fall for each other, each should have Male included in their dating preferences. Nintendo also says a Mii’s gender selection does not change the game’s system or story content.
Could two boys date in the original 3DS game?
No. The original Tomodachi Life for Nintendo 3DS did not support same-sex romantic relationships. In a corporate statement issued May 9, 2014, Nintendo apologized “for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life.” The company said the design could not be changed with a post-release patch. What else does Nintendo say about relationships in the newer game?
