A Windows VPS may work, but Windows alone is not enough: verify that the virtual graphics setup meets vMix’s requirements and that the machine can sustain the stream’s outbound bandwidth. vMix does not provide time-of-day scheduling for a full TV-style program schedule.
Choose the right vMix playback feature
For a continuous sequence of local video and audio files, vMix offers two relevant options. Choose based on whether you are playing files in one input or switching among several vMix inputs.

Neither option is a time-of-day scheduler. If your programming requires shows to start at particular clock times, vMix’s documented looping feature alone does not supply that automation.
Set up the continuous stream
- Prepare your media and preset. Put the files you intend to play on storage accessible to the VPS. In vMix, use List for a sequential collection of files, or create a PlayList if the sequence must switch between vMix inputs. Keep the associated preset available, especially for a PlayList.
- Configure playback. For List, add the files, enable Auto Next and turn on Loop. For PlayList, add the required inputs in order and enable Loop. Check that the list or playlist reaches its end and returns to its beginning as intended before relying on it unattended.
- Choose a YouTube destination. vMix documents a YouTube Live workflow in which you select YouTube Live, sign into the account, create a stream or select an event, and start streaming. Interface labels may have changed since that guide was last updated in 2021, so follow the current screens in vMix and YouTube. vMix YouTube Live setup guide
- Or configure a custom RTMP destination. Select vMix’s Custom RTMP Server destination and enter the destination URL and stream key supplied by the streaming provider. Treat the key as a credential: do not put it in a public preset, screenshot or shared message. vMix streaming settings
- Set output quality and verify the status. vMix exposes streaming quality settings and stream status controls. Choose settings appropriate to the media and the VPS connection; the available sources do not establish a single bitrate, resolution or keyframe interval that fits every YouTube stream. Check YouTube’s current stream health and vMix’s status before leaving the stream unattended.
- Test ending and recovery behavior. The documented YouTube workflow says ending the stream in vMix also ends it on YouTube. Plan how you will detect and restart the stream after a disconnection, application failure or VPS maintenance; vMix documentation describes the playback and streaming functions, not guaranteed unattended recovery.
Check whether the Windows VPS is suitable
A VPS is not suitable merely because it runs Windows. vMix’s published hardware guidance lists Windows 10 or 11 and calls for a dedicated DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics card at minimum; it recommends a dedicated NVIDIA card with 2 GB or more memory. The documentation notes that graphics speed affects how many inputs, outputs and simultaneous production tasks are possible. A VPS that exposes only a basic virtual display may not meet the stated graphics requirement. - Graphics and drivers: Confirm the VPS exposes compatible graphics hardware and that the Windows environment can use the required drivers.
- Outbound network: Confirm the provider permits sustained outbound streaming and that available upload capacity exceeds your configured stream bitrate with room for network variation. vMix identifies the internet connection as a factor in streaming quality. vMix streaming settings
- Remote administration: Make sure you can access the Windows desktop or console to inspect vMix, playback and stream status.
- Operational recovery: Decide how you will monitor the stream and respond to Windows updates, host maintenance, a lost connection or a vMix crash. The documentation does not establish automatic recovery for those events.
No specific VPS provider or configuration is certified by the cited vMix documentation. Ask the provider about Windows licensing, virtual GPU and driver access, sustained upload capacity and remote-console access before committing.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist stops at the end: Check that Loop is enabled. For a List, also check Auto Next so playback advances between files.
- It plays files but does not switch among scenes or inputs: List is designed for a collection of media files in one input. Use PlayList when the sequence needs to switch among vMix inputs.
- vMix runs, but the VPS graphics are inadequate: Ask the provider to confirm the exposed GPU and driver support against vMix’s published requirements. A generic virtual display is not proof that the requirement is met.
- The stream drops or quality suffers: Check vMix’s stream status, configured quality and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity. A connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate can undermine streaming quality; allow headroom for variation.
- YouTube ends when you stop vMix: This is the behavior described in vMix’s YouTube setup guide. Do not stop the vMix stream unless you intend to end the YouTube stream as well.
- The stream does not restart after a crash or maintenance: The documented loop controls cover media playback, not automatic recovery from application or host failures. Arrange monitoring and a restart procedure, or use a service that explicitly provides recovery when YouTube drops the stream.
Keep the content and channel in good standing
A continuous playlist still needs content you have the right to broadcast. Before going live, check permissions for music, game footage and other third-party material, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies. Looping a video does not itself establish that you have the necessary rights or that the channel qualifies for monetization. Because platform rules can change, verify them in YouTube’s current help and Studio interfaces rather than relying on an old setup guide.
