Older models such as Intel HD Graphics 4000 generally do not meet Windows 11’s DirectX 12 graphics requirement. HD Graphics 520, 530, 610, 620, and 630 may meet the graphics requirement, but many computers using them have unsupported sixth- or seventh-generation Intel processors. Windows 11 compatibility therefore depends on the exact GPU, driver, processor, TPM, firmware, and other hardware—not the words “Intel HD Graphics” alone.

This is a screening guide, not Microsoft’s official compatibility list. Intel’s API classifications are available in its graphics API support table, while Microsoft’s supported Intel processor list determines whether the CPU is officially eligible.
While checking graphics compatibility, Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated or corrupted GPU drivers and show recommended versions.

Windows 11’s actual graphics requirement
Microsoft requires a graphics adapter that supports DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver. Windows 11 also requires all of the following:
- A compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- At least 64 GB of storage
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
- TPM 2.0
- A 720p-or-higher display larger than 9 inches where applicable
See Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements for the current baseline. The important point is that “has Intel graphics” is not the test. You need suitable DirectX hardware, a usable WDDM driver, a supported processor, and a PC that passes the remaining requirements.

Find the exact Intel graphics model
Do not rely on a label that only says Intel HD Graphics. Use one of these methods.
Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the complete name, such as Intel HD Graphics 520 or Intel UHD Graphics 630.
DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Open the Display tab.
- Record the GPU name, driver model, driver version, and Feature Levels.
System Information
Press Windows key + R, enter msinfo32, and review the processor, BIOS mode, and firmware information. You can also check the processor under Settings → System → About.
Check the processor—not just the graphics
The processor is often the deciding factor. Examples include:
- Core i5-3320M: third generation
- Core i5-4300U: fourth generation
- Core i5-6200U: sixth generation
- Core i5-7200U: seventh generation
- Core i5-8250U: eighth generation
The first digits after the hyphen usually indicate the generation for common Intel Core models, but verify the complete processor against Microsoft’s live supported-processor list. A DirectX 12-capable HD Graphics 520 or HD Graphics 630 does not make an unsupported sixth- or seventh-generation CPU officially supported.
Run Microsoft’s whole-PC check
Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check before changing drivers or attempting an upgrade. Microsoft links to it from the Windows 11 specifications page.
The result can identify failures involving the CPU, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, firmware mode, memory, storage, or other requirements. If the result says the PC is incompatible, determine which requirement failed. A graphics-compatible system can still be rejected because its processor is unsupported or TPM is disabled.

Model-by-model guidance
HD Graphics 2000, 3000, 2500, and 4000
These are poor candidates for an official Windows 11 upgrade. Intel lists HD Graphics 2500 and 4000 as DirectX 11 hardware, below Windows 11’s DirectX 12 graphics requirement. Intel’s normal support path for HD Graphics 4000 is associated with older Windows versions rather than a current official Windows 11 driver.
That does not mean Windows 11 can never be made to boot on every such machine. It means the graphics hardware and driver path do not satisfy the normal official requirements. Treat HD Graphics 4000 and older as a no for a dependable Windows 11 upgrade.
HD Graphics 4200, 4400, 4600, and 5000
Intel classifies these fourth-generation graphics processors as DirectX 11.1 devices. Some fourth-generation graphics controllers also had DirectX 12 capabilities deprecated after a security-related driver change, according to Intel’s support documentation.
These models are therefore generally not officially compatible with Windows 11, even when the computer has enough RAM and feels fast enough for everyday work. A driver downgrade intended to run a DirectX 12 application on Windows 10 should not be treated as a Windows 11 compatibility solution.

Intel lists HD Graphics 520 and 530 as DirectX 12-capable. They may satisfy the graphics portion of the requirement when an appropriate WDDM driver is available. However, they are commonly paired with sixth-generation processors, which are generally absent from Microsoft’s officially supported Windows 11 CPU list.
Result: the graphics may be acceptable while the complete PC remains officially unsupported.

HD Graphics 610, 620, and 630
These seventh-generation graphics processors are also listed by Intel as supporting DirectX 12. Intel provides Windows 11 driver packages for some related generations, but that does not override Microsoft’s processor rules. Check the exact CPU, firmware, TPM, and PC Health Check result.
UHD Graphics 610, 620, 630, and newer
UHD Graphics is not the same generation as similarly numbered HD Graphics. UHD Graphics 620, for example, should not be judged using the assumptions for HD Graphics 620. UHD Graphics in eighth-generation-and-newer systems is often a viable Windows 11 platform when paired with a processor on Microsoft’s supported list and a suitable driver.

Verify DirectX and WDDM manually
In dxdiag, check the System tab for the installed DirectX version and the Display tab for Driver Model and Feature Levels.
Do not confuse “DirectX 12 is installed” with “the GPU supports the DirectX 12 hardware features Windows 11 requires.” Windows can contain DirectX 12 system components even when an older graphics processor cannot provide the required feature level. Intel’s model-specific API table is more useful for identifying the hardware’s maximum supported DirectX level.
Driver support is a separate question
A GPU can be technically capable of DirectX 12 and still lack a current or appropriate Windows 11 driver. Intel moved sixth- through tenth-generation processor graphics to a legacy support model beginning in 2022. Intel says updates focus on critical fixes and security vulnerabilities, with releases provided quarterly or as needed rather than regular new-feature support. See Intel’s legacy support notice.
Intel’s product pages list Windows 11 drivers for some seventh- through tenth-generation graphics products, including driver 31.0.101.2141 dated April 6, 2026. Intel also lists a sixth-generation package, version 31.0.101.2115, dated December 29, 2022. Driver availability helps with graphics support, but it cannot make an unsupported processor officially eligible.

On laptops, check the manufacturer’s driver first. OEM drivers may be customized for brightness controls, sleep, docking, external displays, and power management. Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant can help identify Intel hardware, but it does not replace the OEM driver or Microsoft’s eligibility check.
Use this decision tree
Green: likely officially compatible
Choose the normal Windows 11 upgrade path when the PC has:
- A processor on Microsoft’s supported list
- DirectX 12-capable Intel graphics
- A compatible WDDM driver
- TPM 2.0
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage
- A passing PC Health Check result
Yellow: technically possible but unsupported
This commonly describes a PC with HD Graphics 520/530 or 610/620/630 and a suitable driver, but a sixth- or seventh-generation processor that Microsoft does not support. It may install with an unofficial workaround, but it is not equivalent to an officially compatible system.
Red: poor candidate
Do not treat the machine as a dependable Windows 11 target if it has HD Graphics 4000 or older, fourth-generation HD Graphics without the required DirectX support, no usable Windows 11 driver, an unsupported processor, no TPM 2.0, incompatible firmware, or an unresolved PC Health Check failure.

What if the graphics passes but Windows 11 rejects the PC?
Do not replace the graphics first. Common causes include an unsupported CPU, disabled TPM, disabled Secure Boot, Legacy BIOS/CSM mode, insufficient storage or memory, or an OEM firmware limitation.
On a desktop, a supported discrete graphics card may address the graphics requirement, but it will not fix an unsupported processor, missing TPM, or incompatible firmware. On most laptops, Intel graphics are integrated into the processor and cannot be replaced independently.

Hybrid-graphics laptops may show Intel graphics alongside NVIDIA or AMD graphics. Windows can use Intel for the desktop and battery-saving tasks while using the discrete GPU for demanding applications. Check every adapter and its driver state.
Can you install Windows 11 anyway?
Sometimes an unofficial installation workaround can get Windows 11 to install or boot on hardware that fails Microsoft’s checks. That is an unsupported installation, not proof of compatibility.

A bypass should not be the normal recommendation when the goal is a reliable, officially supported computer.
Will Windows 11 run well on Intel integrated graphics?
Minimum compatibility is not a performance guarantee. A supported machine with adequate RAM, an SSD, working drivers, and reasonable thermals may handle Windows 11 desktop work, browsing, documents, and video playback acceptably. Intel integrated graphics share system memory rather than using dedicated VRAM.
Gaming is different. Performance depends on the particular game, resolution, memory configuration, CPU, cooling, and drivers. Even a DirectX 12-capable integrated GPU may be unsuitable for newer games. Windows 11 compatibility alone does not promise a particular frame rate or a good gaming experience.
Alternatives for an old Intel PC
- Stay on the currently supported operating system temporarily: use the time to back up files and plan a replacement.
- Consider a supported Linux distribution: this may work well if your applications, games, and peripherals are compatible.
- Replace the computer: this is the most practical option when the system combines HD Graphics 4000-or-older graphics, an unsupported CPU, missing TPM 2.0, and incompatible firmware.
Final verdict
Yes, if the exact Intel graphics supports DirectX 12, a WDDM 2.0 driver is available, the processor is officially supported, and the rest of the PC passes Microsoft’s requirements.
Maybe, for HD Graphics 520/530 or 610/620/630 systems whose graphics and drivers are suitable but whose sixth- or seventh-generation processors are unsupported. Windows 11 may be installable, but the configuration is not officially supported.
No, as a dependable official upgrade for most systems with HD Graphics 4000 or older, unsupported DirectX hardware, no usable Windows 11 driver, or failed TPM, firmware, CPU, or security requirements.
The decisive first steps are to identify the complete GPU name in Device Manager → Display adapters, identify the processor, and run Microsoft PC Health Check.
