Can Xbox Cloud Gaming Run at 120fps? How to Get the Smoothest Stream

A 120Hz monitor won’t turn an Xbox Cloud Gaming stream into 120fps. Here’s how to improve stream stability and when local play is the right choice.

You can’t currently turn on 120fps for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft’s public materials document enhanced cloud streaming at up to 1440p for eligible games, devices, regions and Game Pass Ultimate users; they do not document a consumer setting for 120fps. The practical target is a stable, low-latency stream—generally described as up to 60fps where supported—not true 120fps cloud gaming. See Microsoft’s February 2026 cloud-streaming update and its November 2025 announcement.

Why a 120Hz screen does not mean 120fps cloud gaming

Frames per second (fps) describes how many distinct frames the game or stream delivers each second. Hertz (Hz) describes how often a display refreshes. Resolution describes the image’s pixel dimensions; bitrate describes data used to encode the stream; latency is the delay between an input and its visible result.

Term What it means
FPS Frames generated and delivered by the game or stream
Hz How often the display refreshes
Resolution The number of pixels in each image
Bitrate Data used to encode the video stream
Latency Delay between your input and the response you see

A 120Hz display can show a 60fps stream, but it cannot create the missing game frames. A TV’s motion-interpolation feature may invent intermediate images, but that is not the same as receiving a genuine 120fps stream and can add delay or artifacts. Microsoft likewise treats display refresh rate as a display setting, separate from the content being shown; see its Windows refresh-rate guidance.

Xbox Series X|S can run selected games at 120fps locally, but that console capability does not establish the frame rate of a game streamed from Microsoft’s cloud. The cloud server’s rendering, encoding, network, device and title all affect what reaches you. A game’s local 120fps mode may not be available in a cloud session, and faster internet cannot force the service to send more frames. Microsoft’s Series X|S glossary describes console capabilities, not a 120fps Cloud Gaming option.

Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming for the best available result

Aim for a stable, low-latency stream at the highest quality your title and device offer. Microsoft lists Cloud Gaming access for supported Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate plans, and select free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. The enhanced 1440p stream is associated with eligible Game Pass Ultimate users; a plan that includes Cloud Gaming does not automatically qualify every user or title for every quality feature. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page and the Xbox getting-started guide for availability and plan details, which can vary by region and change over time.

  1. Use a supported client. Update the device, Xbox app or browser, and—on a TV—its firmware. Microsoft lists Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, Mac computers through supported browsers, Android and Apple phones and tablets, Chromebooks, supported handhelds, and select Samsung, LG, VIDAA, Amazon Fire TV and Meta Quest devices. Supported browsers include current Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari. Availability depends on device and region; consult the Cloud Gaming device information and Xbox TV compatibility page. On a PC, visit xbox.com/play, sign in and launch a cloud-supported game. On supported TVs, use the official Xbox app rather than assuming a generic browser offers the same controls.
  2. Choose the highest stream quality offered for your session. If the current interface shows a stream-quality or resolution selector before launch or in the cloud-gaming controls, select the highest available setting. Microsoft has announced selectable resolution and support up to 1440p for eligible sessions, but not every title, device, account or region will show the option. If 1440p stutters, step down to 1080p or the next available setting. The controls can vary as Xbox updates its interfaces; its January 2026 web-experience announcement describes that experience as a public preview, so preview users may see different controls.
  3. Use a stable network. Microsoft recommends at least 10 Mbps down for mobile devices and around 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs and tablets, with 5GHz Wi-Fi if you cannot use Ethernet. These are guidance figures, not guarantees of 60fps or low latency. Wired Ethernet is preferable when practical; otherwise use a strong 5GHz or Wi-Fi 6/6E connection near the access point. Pause large downloads, backups and uploads, and try another time of day if congestion appears to be the problem. Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming guidance and TV requirements provide the cited connection figures.
  4. Reduce avoidable input and display delay. Connect the controller directly to the device running the game; on a PC, USB can be a useful troubleshooting test. Enable the TV’s Game Mode or low-latency mode, and disable motion interpolation and other picture processing if they add delay. Keep the app or browser in a supported full-screen mode where possible. These changes can improve responsiveness, but cannot raise the cloud stream’s frame rate.

Device-specific display settings

Windows PC

To set the monitor’s refresh rate, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the connected monitor and choose a supported rate such as 120Hz or 144Hz. The label can vary with Windows version and graphics driver. Microsoft documents this path in its refresh-rate instructions. This sets the display capability; it does not change the Cloud Gaming stream’s fps.

Xbox console

For locally installed games, open Settings > General > TV & display options and set Refresh rate to 120Hz if the console, display and HDMI connection support it. Use 4K TV details to check what the console recognizes. These settings govern the console’s local output and do not show that a Cloud Gaming session is streaming at 120fps.

TV, phone, tablet or handheld

On a TV, enable its gaming or low-latency input mode if available; exact names and options differ by model. For phones, tablets and handhelds, use the supported Xbox app or browser experience for that device and region. A 120Hz panel, a TV app, or a browser that works for Cloud Gaming does not guarantee access to the same stream quality or controls as another client.

If the stream looks wrong or a setting is missing

The display reports 120Hz, but the game looks like 60fps

The display is reporting its refresh capability, not the stream’s frame rate. The stream may be 60fps or lower, and some games render at 30fps or have variable performance. Check whether a quality selector is available, disable motion processing, and compare with a locally installed game whose 120fps mode is supported.

The 120fps option is missing

That is expected: Microsoft’s cited public consumer materials do not document a setting that enables 120fps Cloud Gaming. A local console performance mode does not necessarily apply to the cloud version. Do not rely on hidden browser flags, modified clients or extensions as a way to unlock it.

The quality selector or 1440p option is missing

It may depend on the game, plan, account, device, region or rollout, and the interface can differ between app, browser and preview experiences. Check the current plan and device information on the Xbox Cloud Gaming page; there is no universal menu path that exposes the option in every session.

1440p stutters or the image is unstable

Possible causes include Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss, high latency or limitations in the device’s video decoding. Try Ethernet or stronger 5GHz Wi-Fi, stop other heavy network traffic, lower the stream resolution, then restart the app or browser and test again. A lower, steady setting can be a better experience than a higher one that repeatedly buffers.

The TV supports 120Hz, but controls still feel delayed

The stream, TV app, network route, controller connection and display processing can each add delay. Enable Game Mode, connect the controller directly to the cloud-playing device, and test Ethernet or a less congested Wi-Fi connection. If competitive response or consistent frame pacing is the priority, streaming has more variables than local play.

How to get genuine 120fps

For a dependable 120fps target, play locally on an Xbox Series X|S or a suitable gaming PC. Install a game that specifically supports a 120fps mode, use a compatible 120Hz display and connection, and enable the relevant performance and display settings. Some games make visual or resolution compromises in that mode. Xbox Remote Play is a different service—it streams a game installed on your own console—and Microsoft’s public Remote Play page does not document a consumer 120fps mode, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed workaround.

When Cloud Gaming makes sense

  • Choose Cloud Gaming when convenience, trying a game without a download, or playing on a phone, browser, TV, handheld or older Xbox matters more than a guaranteed 120fps.
  • Choose local play when the game’s 120fps mode, competitive latency, predictable frame pacing or maximum display responsiveness is the priority.
  • Consider another cloud service only after checking official support in your region, the meaning of its 120fps claim, plan and game eligibility, device and codec requirements, and real-world latency from your location. A service’s headline refresh rate alone is not proof that it will suit your setup.
