A solid orange light on the PS4’s power indicator means the console is in Rest Mode—a normal low-power state, not an error. Press the PS button on a paired controller, or press the console’s power button, to wake it. A blinking orange light usually means the PS4 is entering Rest Mode and should turn solid after a few seconds.
What the PS4’s orange light means
Sony identifies a solid orange power indicator as Rest Mode. The console is not fully shut down, but it is not displaying the normal gameplay screen. A brief orange blink is the transition into Rest Mode, rather than a separate error code. The light can look amber or yellow depending on how it appears.
| Indicator | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Solid orange | Rest Mode | Press PS on a paired controller or press the console’s power button to wake it. |
| Blinking orange | Entering Rest Mode | Wait a few seconds for the light to become solid. |
| Blinking blue, then solid white | Starting normally | Wait for startup to finish. |
| Solid white | Powered on | The console is on. |
| Blinking white, then off | Shutting down | Wait until the light turns off. |
| No light | Fully off | Turn on the console normally. |
| Pulsing red | Overheating indicator | Turn the console off, let it cool, and ensure its vents have clear airflow. |
These indicator meanings are documented in Sony’s PS4 and PS5 power-indicator guide. Solid orange alone does not identify a hardware fault.
How to wake a PS4 from Rest Mode
- Check that the console’s orange light is solid rather than briefly blinking.
- Press the PS button on a controller paired with the PS4.
- If the controller does not wake the console, connect it to the PS4 with a USB cable and press PS.
- Alternatively, press the PS4’s power button once.
- During a normal start, the light blinks blue and then becomes solid white.
Sony lists the controller and console-button methods in its PS4 power-saving guidance. If the indicator changes as expected but the TV stays blank, treat that as a possible display or HDMI problem rather than assuming the orange light signals a console failure; Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs for display troubleshooting.

What Rest Mode lets the PS4 do
Rest Mode is standby, not a complete shutdown. Depending on the settings enabled on your PS4, it can supply power to USB ports for charging, remain connected to the internet for downloads and updates, and keep a supported application suspended so you can resume it later. These functions are optional; a solid orange light does not by itself mean a game is downloading or a controller is charging.
To configure the options, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode. The available choices include:

- Keep Application Suspended: Allows supported applications to resume after Rest Mode.
To adjust when inactivity causes the console to enter a low-power state, go to Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Time Until PS4 Turns Off. Available behavior and wording can vary with system configuration. Sony’s power-saving guide explains the Rest Mode settings.
How to turn the PS4 fully off
If you want the console completely shut down instead of in Rest Mode, use Power > Turn Off PS4 from the function screen. Wait for the power indicator to go out before disconnecting the AC cord. Sony warns that removing power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss or corruption, or damage the console.

If the orange light keeps blinking or the PS4 will not wake
A brief orange blink is expected as the console enters Rest Mode. If it continues blinking and the console is unresponsive, orange alone does not establish a particular hardware failure. Try this sequence:
- Wait briefly to see whether the light becomes solid orange.
- If the console responds, wake it and choose Power > Turn Off PS4.
- If it is frozen, hold the power button until the console beeps and shuts down. Wait until the indicator stops flashing before disconnecting power.
- Reconnect the power cable and try starting the PS4 again.
- If it still will not start, try Safe Mode or consult Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting steps.
A controller that is not paired or has a depleted battery may fail to wake the console; the USB connection-and-PS-button method is a useful fallback. If the console repeatedly fails to start, use Sony’s PS4 system software and Safe Mode instructions or PlayStation Repairs.

Starting Safe Mode
Turn the PS4 completely off, then press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable if Safe Mode asks you to. For a PS4 that cannot enter Safe Mode, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance says to turn it off, wait for the light to stop flashing, disconnect the power cable for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again.
A USB system-software update is an advanced recovery option, not a fix to try for an ordinary solid orange light. Sony’s official instructions specify a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive with folders named PS4/UPDATE and the update file saved as PS4UPDATE.PUP; in Safe Mode, choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK. Do not select Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software) casually: that option deletes all data on the console.
Make sure the light is on the console, not the controller
The console’s front power indicator and the DualShock 4 controller’s light bar have different meanings. A slowly blinking orange controller light generally indicates charging; when charging in Rest Mode, the light bar turns off after the controller is charged. See Sony’s controller-charging instructions if the orange light is on the controller rather than the PS4 itself.
