Lunar Client lets you add compatible third-party Fabric mods on Minecraft 1.16.5 and later. Choose a compatible profile in the launcher and install through its Mods area or Explore; a mod’s presence in the list does not guarantee it will work, since compatibility varies by version and mod.
What kinds of mods can you add?
Lunar Client’s documented custom-mod feature is for Fabric mods on Minecraft 1.16.5 and later. Its FAQ uses the shorter wording “1.16+,” but the detailed instructions and troubleshooting guide specify 1.16.5+, so that is the safer version threshold to follow. Lunar’s FAQ says you cannot add mods to Minecraft 1.7, 1.8, or 1.12.

This is not a general promise of support for every loader. The dedicated guidance describes third-party mod loading as Fabric-based. Although Lunar’s profile guide lists options such as Forge for profiles and older modpacks, that does not establish that Forge mods can be added through the custom-mod feature. How to install mods in Lunar Client
- Select a compatible Minecraft version. In the Lunar Client launcher, choose a version supported by the mod and create or open that profile’s settings. For the documented custom-mod feature, use Minecraft 1.16.5 or later.
- Use the Fabric-based mod setup. Open the profile’s Mods area. Alternatively, use Explore to find and install compatible mods from CurseForge or Modrinth. Lunar’s CurseForge installation guide describes both Explore and manual installation.
- Install manually if needed. Get the mod file from its distribution page, then drag it into the profile’s Mods area or folder in the launcher.
- Check the match before launching. Confirm that the mod supports the selected Minecraft version and Fabric loader. Also consider whether it is compatible with Lunar Client’s features; Lunar warns that not all mods work with the client.
What to do if Lunar Client crashes
A crash or launch error can come from an incompatible mod or a conflict between mods. Remove recently added mods one at a time, trying to launch after each removal, until you identify the one causing the problem. Lunar’s mod-loading troubleshooting guide recommends this isolation approach.

If the problem persists, Lunar’s CurseForge guide also suggests disabling Lunar features as a troubleshooting option. If you cannot identify the cause, contact Lunar Client support and provide the relevant logs so the issue can be reviewed.

The current custom third-party mod instructions specify Fabric, not Forge. Lunar’s profile documentation lists Forge among general profile options, but that is a separate capability and should not be taken as confirmation that a Forge mod will load through Lunar Client’s custom-mod feature. The troubleshooting guide describes possible future support for legacy versions on Forge as a plan, not an available feature.
