Yes—but the player rank is called Pirate Legend, not Pirate Lord. Reach rank 50 with at least three Trading Companies to earn Pirate Legend status. The Pirate Lord is a separate character who grants Legends access to Athena’s Fortune.
What does “Pirate Lord” mean in Sea of Thieves?
The phrase refers to two different things. Pirate Legend is an achievement players earn through Trading Company reputation. The Pirate Lord is a character in the game, not a player rank you can unlock or become.

How do you become a Pirate Legend?
Rare’s Become A Legend page states: “Reaching rank 50 with at least three Trading Companies will earn you the status of Pirate Legend.” Rare’s Adventure page likewise describes the requirement as rank 50 in any three Companies.
- Build reputation with Trading Companies by taking part in their activities.
- Reach rank 50 in at least three different Trading Companies.
- Once you meet the threshold, you earn Pirate Legend status and can access Athena’s Fortune progression.
The official progression pages establish the threshold but do not identify one universally fastest route. Choose the Companies and activities that suit how you play rather than relying on a promised shortcut.

What does Pirate Legend unlock?
Pirate Legend is a gateway to Athena’s Fortune, a Trading Company with its own ranks and Voyages. Rare’s current progression page says Legends can purchase Athena’s Fortune Voyages. The Xbox guide describes the Pirate Lord as granting Legends access to Athena’s Fortune, including its hideout.
It is not the end of progression. Official updates have added to Athena’s Fortune over time: Season 11 release notes describe refreshed, shorter Athena’s Fortune Voyages and shop access for Pirate Legends, while release notes 2.5.1.1 describe expanded Athena’s Fortune ranks and rewards.

Does buying Sea of Thieves make you a Pirate Legend?
No. Owning or installing the game does not grant the in-game status; you still have to meet the Trading Company rank requirement. Rare’s buy page lists current editions and platforms.
