Yes. A Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card can be lent to another player, and its portability makes resale a practical option—but Nintendo’s FAQ does not spell out resale terms or make an explicit resale guarantee. The card contains a key, not the game data: whoever borrows or buys it must download the game on their own console and keep the card inserted to play.

What a game-key card includes—and what it does not

Nintendo defines a game-key card as a physical game card that contains no game data, only the key needed to start the software. The first time it is used on a Switch 2, the console must download the game data over the internet. The downloaded data is stored on the console, while save data is stored in the console’s internal storage.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described the format at the company’s 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in 2025: “The game-key card used for Nintendo Switch 2 does not contain the full game data for the game itself; instead, it stores a key to activate the software. An internet connection is required for downloading the data for the game the first time you play it. Subsequent gameplay does not require an internet connection, but the game-key card must be inserted into the system.” Nintendo said the format was introduced to accommodate larger game data sizes on Switch 2; that is Nintendo’s stated rationale, not an independently quantified comparison. Nintendo’s 2025 shareholder Q&A has the full answer.

Can you borrow a game-key card?

Yes. Nintendo says a game-key card can be used on any Switch 2 system, and no Nintendo Account is required to download its game data. That means the physical card can be handed to someone using another console. On that console, the borrower needs an internet connection for the initial download, enough storage, and the card itself whenever they want to play.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Before lending one

  • Check that the borrower’s console can connect to the internet for the first-use download.
  • Make sure it has enough free internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card. The game’s packaging states the required space.
  • Plan to lend the physical card for as long as the borrower needs access; the downloaded game still requires the card to be inserted to start.

Downloading the data does not transfer the card or make the game independently playable without it. The borrower’s save data is stored on their console, separately from the card.

Can you resell a game-key card?

The format supports handing the physical card to another owner: Nintendo says it works on any Switch 2, and downloading the data does not require a Nintendo Account. A buyer should therefore be able to use the card on their own console after downloading the game data.

Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

That is a practical conclusion from Nintendo’s stated operating rules, not a quoted resale policy. Nintendo’s FAQ does not expressly address resale or set resale terms. Do not assume that a downloaded copy of the game can be passed on separately: the card remains necessary to play.

Does a game-key card need internet every time?

No. Internet is required to download the game data the first time the card is used on a given system. Nintendo says subsequent gameplay does not require an internet connection, but the game-key card must remain inserted. If the card is used on another Switch 2, that system needs its own first-use download.

How much storage does the download need?

The required space varies by game; Nintendo directs players to the game packaging for the title’s storage requirement. The console needs enough free space in internal storage or on a microSD Express card to download the data. A microSD Express card is an optional way to add storage if the console’s available space is insufficient, not a requirement for every game-key card. Check the game’s stated need and current compatibility information before choosing an expansion card. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ for its current game-key card guidance.

How game-key cards differ from other Switch 2 formats

Format What it contains or manages Download and internet What is needed to play or lend
Game-key card A physical card containing a key, not the game data. Internet is needed for the first-use download on each system. The game data must be stored on the console, and the card must be inserted to play.
Regular physical game card Nintendo’s FAQ distinguishes regular game cards from game-key cards; the game-key card section says the latter contains only a key. Not stated in the cited game-key card guidance for regular cards. Not stated in the cited game-key card guidance for regular cards.
Virtual game card A feature for managing digital purchases, not a physical game-key card. Uses separate rules for digital game access. Nintendo describes lending virtual game cards within a family group under that feature’s rules.

Nintendo’s virtual game card feature is separate from lending or reselling a physical game-key card. Its family-group lending rules do not govern the physical-card arrangement described above. Nintendo introduced the feature alongside Switch 2; see Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement.

Practical takeaway before you hand over the card

Think of the card as a portable physical key and the downloaded game as console-stored data. A recipient needs both: their own download on a system with internet access and sufficient storage, plus the card whenever they play. Nintendo’s materials support lending and make resale a reasonable practical inference, while leaving formal resale terms unstated.
