No: the claim that Nintendo Switch 2 physical and digital games have unchanged prices is no longer accurate for every eligible new Nintendo-published game. Nintendo says that starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026, new digital games published by Nintendo and exclusive to Switch 2 can have a different MSRP from their physical versions. That policy does not set a price gap for every game or determine what retailers charge.
What changed in Nintendo’s Switch 2 game pricing?
At the US launch in 2025, Nintendo announced the same MSRP for the listed games in both formats: Mario Kart World was $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza was $69.99. Those were launch-era prices, not a promise that later games would always cost the same in physical and digital form. Nintendo also said prices could be adjusted in the future depending on market conditions. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 announcement gives the launch pricing details.

Nintendo’s later policy applies to new digital games that are both Nintendo-published and exclusive to Switch 2. Beginning with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026, their digital MSRP may differ from the physical version’s MSRP. Nintendo has not announced a single, universal difference between formats; prices can vary by title. Nintendo’s support article on Switch 2 game pricing describes the policy.
What does the Yoshi example show?
Nintendo’s US listing gives Yoshi and the Mysterious Book a digital price of $59.99 and a release date of May 21, 2026. The official listing cited here does not establish the physical MSRP, so it is not enough to calculate or claim a physical-versus-digital price difference. Nintendo’s April 23, 2026 game announcement contains the digital listing.

Which games does the policy cover?
- Covered by the stated policy: new digital games published by Nintendo and exclusive to Switch 2, starting with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
- Not established by the policy: a different price for every Switch 2 game, for third-party games, or for every older game in the catalog.
- Retail prices: Nintendo’s MSRP is not a guarantee of the price at checkout. Nintendo says retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and prices may vary by title.
Nintendo says the packaged and digital versions offer the same experience and attributes the price distinction to the different costs of producing and distributing each format. The format affects how a game is delivered; Nintendo’s statement does not describe a difference in game content. Nintendo’s policy statement explains its rationale and retailer pricing.
How to compare a physical and digital price fairly
- Check the exact game and edition. Confirm that the listings are for the same title and edition, rather than comparing different bundles or versions.
- Compare prices in the same region. Currency, taxes, retailer pricing, and availability can differ by market.
- Separate MSRP from checkout price. Nintendo’s suggested price and a retailer’s current price are not interchangeable; compare what each seller actually charges.
- Verify both formats before calculating a gap. For Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, the cited Nintendo listing establishes the US digital price but not the physical MSRP. A precise comparison requires an authoritative current physical listing as well.
Are console price increases part of this game-pricing change?
No. Nintendo announced separate, region-specific increases to the Switch 2 system price. They concern the console, not a universal change to game prices.

Nintendo said other regions would also implement console price changes, with local details to come from regional subsidiaries.
