Can You Connect a Bluetooth Keyboard to a Nintendo Switch?

A Bluetooth keyboard will not pair through a supported Switch setup. Use a dock-connected USB keyboard in TV mode, where the game supports it.

No—not through an officially supported direct Bluetooth pairing. Nintendo’s documented keyboard option is a USB keyboard connected to the dock, and it works only in TV mode with games or other software that accept keyboard input. That dock-based method applies to Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch 2; Nintendo does not offer it for Switch Lite.

Can you pair a Bluetooth keyboard directly?

Nintendo does not provide a supported way to pair a Bluetooth keyboard with a Switch or Switch 2. The console’s Bluetooth features do not mean it supports every type of Bluetooth device: Nintendo documents Bluetooth audio separately, while its keyboard instructions specify USB connection through the dock. The Bluetooth Audio menu is for audio devices, not keyboards.

So a Bluetooth keyboard that works with a phone, tablet, or computer should not be expected to appear as a usable keyboard in the Switch’s Bluetooth settings. This describes Nintendo’s supported setup; it does not rule out every unofficial adapter or hardware workaround.

Use a USB keyboard through the dock

Nintendo says a USB keyboard can be connected to a dock’s USB port for use with compatible software. It does not guarantee that every keyboard will work. To try the supported method:

Does the dock-connected keyboard work in handheld or tabletop mode?

No. The official method relies on the dock’s USB ports, so it is limited to TV mode. Removing the console from the dock also disconnects dock-connected keyboard devices, as Nintendo explains in its dock connection guidance. For handheld, tabletop, or Lite play, use the game’s on-screen keyboard where available.

What can you do with a keyboard?

A connected keyboard is an additional input device, not a universal replacement for Joy-Con or a Pro Controller. What it can do depends on the game or application. It may accept text for chat, search, or login fields, or provide game-specific controls where the software supports them.

What about a wireless keyboard with a USB receiver?

A keyboard with a proprietary 2.4GHz USB receiver is different from a Bluetooth-only keyboard: the receiver plugs into the dock and presents itself as a USB input device. It may work if the Switch recognizes it, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility. Check the keyboard maker’s current Switch support information before buying.

A Bluetooth-to-USB adapter is another, unofficial approach. It adds a pairing and compatibility step, and may bring problems with supported profiles, power, keyboard layout, or latency. It is not an official fix and is a poor default purchase if you need a dependable setup. A basic wired USB keyboard is the simplest option to try.

Troubleshoot a keyboard that does not work

  1. Check the mode: confirm the console is docked and in TV mode.
  2. Check the connection: plug the keyboard or receiver into a USB port on the dock, not just into a charger.
  3. Check the software: test an actual text-entry field or a title whose publisher confirms keyboard support.
  4. Try another dock port: reconnect the keyboard and test again.
  5. Simplify the setup: disconnect hubs and other unnecessary USB devices, then test a basic wired keyboard if available.
  6. Check wireless mode: for a receiver keyboard, make sure its receiver is connected and the keyboard is set to 2.4GHz receiver mode rather than Bluetooth.
  7. Check the layout: Nintendo documents a USB-keyboard language setting under HOME Menu → System Settings → System. See its keyboard language guidance.
  8. Restart and update: restart the console, reconnect the keyboard, and install available console and software updates.

If a keyboard does nothing in one game, that alone does not show that the keyboard or dock is faulty; the game may not accept keyboard input.
