A standard Game Boy cartridge provides the game program and sound data; the console’s Audio Processing Unit (APU) generates the music and effects. The game’s code schedules notes and configures the APU’s four sound channels. There is one unusual exception: external cartridge hardware can feed an analog signal into the console through VIN, but ordinary games do not need it.
How a Game Boy game turns cartridge data into sound
- The console runs the cartridge program. The cartridge ROM holds the game code and data. Its header includes an entry point and metadata about the game and expected hardware; it does not replace the console’s ordinary sound hardware. See Pan Docs’ cartridge-header reference.
- The game’s sound engine schedules musical events. Software decides when notes and effects begin, change, and end, then writes settings to memory-mapped audio registers. Those settings configure properties such as frequency, volume or envelope, waveform or noise, duration, and triggering. The Pan Docs audio-register reference describes these controls.
- The APU generates the signals. The Game Boy’s built-in APU has four channels, each suited to a different kind of sound.
- The console routes the audio to its outputs. The channel signals are mixed into left and right paths, amplified, and sent to headphones or the speaker. The built-in speaker combines the channels into mono.
What the four sound channels do
- Two pulse channels: Produce pulse waves with selectable duty patterns, useful for many melodic and rhythmic parts.
- Wave channel: Plays a waveform supplied by the game, allowing a different tone shape from the pulse channels.
- Noise channel: Produces a pseudo-random signal, often used for percussion and effects.
The APU makes the electrical sound signals; game software supplies the musical timing and settings. This division is why a cartridge can contain music data without itself being the ordinary source of the sound.

The unusual exception: audio through cartridge VIN
The cartridge connector includes VIN, an analog audio input. External hardware in a cartridge can send a signal through VIN for the console to mix into its audio path alongside the APU’s output. Pan Docs’ audio reference notes that no licensed games used this feature. It is therefore an exception, not the standard way Game Boy cartridges play music.

ROM-size information in a cartridge header describes how much read-only memory is present; it does not indicate that the cartridge ordinarily synthesizes the game’s audio. Cartridge designs may include mapper or other hardware, but in normal playback the game runs on the console and controls the console APU. For more technical behavior and implementation detail, see Pan Docs’ audio details.

What “8-bit sound” means here
“8-bit” is a broad label associated with the console era, not a precise description of the bit depth of every sound the Game Boy produces. The more useful explanation is that its APU combines two pulse channels, a programmable wave channel, and a noise channel under software control.
