Usually, not directly. Most laptops’ HDMI ports are output-only, so an HDMI cable from the Switch dock will not normally display the game on the laptop. For a regular Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED Model, use the dock with an external USB HDMI capture card and capture software such as OBS Studio. A direct connection is possible only on a laptop with genuine HDMI input, which is uncommon.
Usually, you cannot connect a Nintendo Switch directly to a laptop
Most laptops have an HDMI output, not an HDMI input. That means the laptop can send its own screen to a TV or monitor, but it normally cannot receive the Nintendo Switch’s video signal. Connecting the Switch dock to the laptop with a standard HDMI cable therefore usually does nothing.
The practical solution for a regular Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED Model is a dock and an external USB HDMI capture card for Nintendo Switch. The capture card receives the dock’s HDMI signal and makes it available to the laptop as a video source in software such as OBS Studio.
A direct HDMI connection can work only if your particular laptop has a genuine HDMI input. That feature is uncommon, and Nintendo advises checking the laptop’s specifications because operation is not guaranteed even when HDMI input is present.

Which Switch models work with a laptop?
| Switch model | Can it send video to a laptop? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | Yes, indirectly | The Switch dock, HDMI cable, USB capture card, USB cable, and capture software |
| Nintendo Switch OLED Model | Yes, indirectly | The OLED dock or another compatible dock, HDMI cable, USB capture card, USB cable, and capture software |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | No, not using the normal dock-and-capture method | Switch Lite does not support TV Mode |
The regular Switch and Switch OLED Model support TV Mode through a compatible dock and can output video over HDMI at up to 1080p in TV Mode. The Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, so adding a dock or capture card does not turn it into a console that can display on a laptop.

The recommended setup: Switch dock plus USB capture card
The signal path looks like this:
Nintendo Switch in dock
↓ HDMI
Capture card HDMI IN
↓ USB
Laptop running OBS or compatible capture software
This is not the same as using a simple USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. A capture card is specifically designed to receive an HDMI signal and present it to the computer as a video source.
What you need
- A dockable Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED Model
- The Switch AC adapter and a wall power outlet
- An HDMI cable from the dock to the capture card
- A USB HDMI capture card with an HDMI IN port
- A USB cable to connect the capture card to the laptop
- Capture software, such as OBS Studio
- Optionally, a second HDMI cable and a TV or monitor for passthrough
How to connect the Switch to the laptop
- Connect the official or compatible Switch AC adapter to the dock and plug it directly into wall power.
- Place the Switch fully into the dock.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the dock’s HDMI OUT port.
- Connect the other end to the capture card’s HDMI IN port. Do not use the capture card’s HDMI OUT for this connection.
- Connect the capture card to the laptop with its USB cable. If the capture card requires USB 3.0, use a compatible USB 3.0 port and the supplied cable where applicable.
- Install or open OBS Studio, then add a Video Capture Device source.
- Select the capture card from OBS’s device list and confirm the Switch picture appears in the preview.
In OBS Studio, the relevant source type is called Video Capture Device on Windows and macOS. The exact device name depends on the capture card. If the card offers resolution or frame-rate settings, choose a mode supported by both the Switch’s TV output and the capture card.
How to play with less delay
A capture preview on a laptop can have noticeable delay because the video must be processed by the capture hardware and software before it appears on screen. It may be acceptable for turn-based games, menus, or recording, but it is not always ideal for fast competitive games.

Switch dock HDMI OUT → capture card HDMI IN
capture card HDMI OUT → TV or monitor
capture card USB → laptop
Play on the TV or monitor while the laptop records or streams the same signal. Passthrough can provide a more direct display path, but its behavior, supported resolutions, and frame rates vary by capture card. Check those specifications before buying.
Can you use the laptop’s HDMI port instead?
Usually, no. The HDMI-shaped port on most laptops is designed to output the laptop’s display to another screen. HDMI is directional in this context: a cable cannot make an output-only port accept video.
Look up the exact laptop model in its technical specifications or manual. The documentation must specifically identify the port as HDMI input or otherwise confirm that it accepts incoming video. Do not assume that a port is an input merely because it has the same physical shape as the HDMI port on a TV.
Even with a laptop that has HDMI input, Nintendo does not guarantee that the Switch will work with that particular computer. A capture card is generally the more predictable solution.

Why a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter does not solve the problem
A typical USB-C-to-HDMI adapter sends video out from a computer or compatible device to a monitor. It does not receive the Switch’s HDMI output and turn it into a laptop video source.
For the laptop to receive the console’s picture, the hardware must have an HDMI input and capture circuitry. That is why the correct product category is a USB HDMI capture card, not an ordinary display adapter.
What about a Switch Lite?
The Switch Lite cannot normally be displayed on a laptop through a dock and capture card. Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, and it has no ordinary docked HDMI-output workflow.
A replacement dock, HDMI cable, USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, or capture card does not change that limitation. If laptop gameplay is the goal, the standard Switch or Switch OLED Model is the appropriate hardware choice.

Choosing a capture card
Search for a USB HDMI capture card for Nintendo Switch rather than a generic HDMI cable or USB-C display adapter. Before purchasing, verify all of the following:
- HDMI input: The card must receive the Switch signal through an HDMI IN port.
- USB requirement: Confirm whether it requires USB 3.0, USB-C, or a particular USB bandwidth.
- Laptop operating-system support: Check compatibility with the version of Windows or macOS installed on the laptop.
- Supported resolution and frame rate: The Switch can output up to 1080p in TV Mode, but the capture card and software may support fewer modes.
- Passthrough: If you plan to play on a TV or monitor, make sure the card has HDMI OUT and supports the desired passthrough mode.
- Software and drivers: Confirm whether the card works as a standard video device in OBS or needs manufacturer software or current drivers.
- Included cables: Check whether the required USB and HDMI cables are included.
Specifications, availability, price, and operating-system support can change. Do not assume that every capture card has the same latency, image quality, passthrough behavior, or software support.

A high-speed HDMI cable is useful if the dock’s cable is missing or damaged, but it does not replace the capture card. Similarly, a Nintendo Switch dock replacement may be appropriate if the original dock is defective or unavailable, but the replacement dock still needs to send its HDMI output to a capture device or a display with a compatible input.

Troubleshooting a black screen or missing capture device
The laptop or OBS shows no picture
- Confirm that you have a dockable Switch or Switch OLED Model, not a Switch Lite.
- Make sure the console is fully inserted into the dock.
- Connect the dock’s AC adapter and plug it directly into wall power.
- Check that the HDMI cable is connected to the dock’s HDMI OUT port.
- Check that the other end goes to the capture card’s HDMI IN port, not HDMI OUT.
- In OBS, select the capture card as a Video Capture Device.
- Try a compatible USB port, especially if the capture card specifies USB 3.0.
- Check the capture card’s supported resolution and frame-rate settings against the Switch’s output.
OBS does not list the capture card
- Disconnect and reconnect the capture card.
- Try another compatible USB port and avoid an unpowered hub while testing.
- Close other software that may already be using the capture device.
- Install any current driver or utility required by the manufacturer.
- Restart OBS after connecting the capture card, then add a new Video Capture Device source.
Passthrough works, but the laptop preview does not
That usually indicates that the HDMI signal is reaching the capture card but the laptop-side USB connection or software configuration needs attention. Confirm the USB connection, select the correct device in OBS, and use a capture mode supported by the card. If the TV or monitor is connected directly to the card’s HDMI OUT, it should use a second HDMI cable.
The Switch has no TV picture at all
For general dock-video problems, simplify the chain: use direct wall power and connect the dock directly to the capture card or display rather than routing the HDMI signal through an HDMI selector or another intermediary. Also test the HDMI cable and, if possible, a different display or capture input.
Bottom line
Yes, you can use a Nintendo Switch with a laptop, but most laptops cannot accept the Switch directly through HDMI. For a standard Switch or Switch OLED Model, connect the console to its dock, route the dock’s HDMI OUT to a USB HDMI capture card, connect that card to the laptop, and select it in OBS Studio as a Video Capture Device. Use HDMI passthrough to play on a TV or monitor if laptop-preview delay is a problem. The Switch Lite is not compatible with this normal docked setup because it does not support TV Mode.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does connecting my Switch to my laptop with HDMI not work?
Most laptops have HDMI output-only ports, so they can send video to another display but cannot receive the Switch’s HDMI signal. A direct connection works only if the specific laptop has genuine HDMI input.
Can I use a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter instead of a capture card?
No. A typical USB-C-to-HDMI adapter sends video out to a display; it does not capture an incoming HDMI signal. You need a USB HDMI capture card.
Can I connect a Nintendo Switch Lite to my laptop?
No. Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, so it cannot use the ordinary dock-to-capture-card method.
The Bottom Line
The practical answer is yes—with a capture card. A regular Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED Model can appear on a laptop through its dock and an external USB HDMI capture card. A normal HDMI cable, USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, or Switch Lite dock workaround will not normally work.
