Can You Downgrade Minecraft Bedrock? What to Know by Platform

Minecraft’s official instructions cover updates and world backups, not a general way to install an arbitrary older Bedrock release. Find the right next step for your platform and goal.

There is no general, officially documented way to choose and install any older Minecraft: Bedrock Edition release. Minecraft’s help pages explain how to update the game, back up worlds, and use Beta or Preview testing channels, but they do not provide a supported downgrade selector. The safest next step depends on whether you want an older game client or simply need to recover an earlier world save.

Can you downgrade Minecraft Bedrock?

Not through a general downgrade procedure documented by Minecraft’s official support pages. The official instructions describe updating through the relevant platform or store, not selecting an arbitrary historical Bedrock release. The steps and available options depend on your platform; the sources cited here do not establish one universal downgrade path for Windows, mobile devices, and consoles.

That distinction matters if your goal is to join a server or Realm that expects a different version: restoring an older world save does not change the installed game client. Do not treat community posts about third-party launchers as official guidance. They do not establish that a tool is currently safe, supported, compatible, or consistent with applicable licensing terms.

Protect your worlds before changing anything

Back up worlds before experimenting with installations or versions. Minecraft’s Android backup instructions describe a direct file-copy method only when the world’s File Storage Location is set to External. If your worlds are in Application storage, the same direct-copy method does not apply; Minecraft points readers to its Realms transfer instructions instead. See Minecraft Help’s Android world-backup guide.

  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs

Copy externally stored Android worlds

  1. Connect the Android phone or tablet to a computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
  2. On the device, choose “File Transfer” or “MTP” when prompted.
  3. On the computer, browse to Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds.
  4. Copy the minecraftWorlds folder or the individual folder for the world you want to preserve.

If the world uses Application storage, use the transfer route referenced in Minecraft’s help page rather than assuming the folder above contains it.

What to expect on each platform

Platform What the official instructions establish Downgrade guidance
Android Minecraft’s mobile help describes updating through the platform store and documents copying worlds when File Storage Location is External. Mobile update instructions; Android backup instructions. No official arbitrary older-version installation method is documented in these sources.
iOS Minecraft directs users to the App Store for manual mobile updates. Its Preview instructions describe TestFlight enrollment for an in-development build and note limited capacity. Mobile update instructions; Beta and Preview instructions. Neither source documents installing an arbitrary older public release.
Windows and consoles Minecraft’s update page covers current update routes and platform examples. Minecraft update instructions. The page does not describe a general Bedrock version-history selector. The Minecraft Feedback post is community feedback, not support documentation.

Beta and Preview are not downgrade selectors

Minecraft describes Beta and Preview as ways to access in-development builds, not as a documented means of choosing any past public release. On Android, joining Beta replaces the normal client, and Minecraft recommends backing up worlds first. On iOS, Preview uses TestFlight and has limited capacity. Check the official mobile Beta and Preview instructions for the relevant enrollment details.

Restoring a Realm backup changes the world, not the client

Minecraft Realms automatically creates backups at regular intervals. The restore feature lets you choose a manual or automatic save; restoring it returns the world to the state captured in that save, so progress made afterward may be lost. It does not install an older version of Minecraft. Follow Minecraft Help’s Realm backup restore instructions only if your goal is to recover an earlier world state.

Choose the right next step

  • You need an older world state: Look for a suitable world backup or, for a Realm, restore a saved Realm backup.
  • You want to protect an Android world: Check whether File Storage Location is External and follow the matching backup or transfer instructions before changing the installation.
  • You want a past public game version: The official sources here do not provide a general Bedrock downgrade method. Avoid assuming that a testing channel or third-party launcher is an officially supported substitute.
  • You need to match a server or Realm: Confirm which client version it requires, then check the update options available through your platform’s official store or Minecraft’s update instructions. The reviewed sources do not establish a supported rollback procedure for that purpose.

To confirm which edition you have, consult Minecraft Help’s guide to the different Minecraft editions; Bedrock availability and update routes vary by platform.
