Yes, you can download the official Minecraft Launcher for free on Windows 11—but the full game is normally paid. You can use the official Java demo or Bedrock trial at no cost, buy the PC bundle for permanent access, or play through a qualifying paid PC Game Pass subscription.

The official Minecraft download page and Microsoft Store provide the launcher, not a free copy of the complete game. Your Microsoft account must own the PC license, have an eligible Game Pass entitlement, or be eligible for a demo or trial.

- Open the official Minecraft download page.
- Choose the Windows 10/11 download option, or install Minecraft Launcher through the Microsoft Store.
- Open the launcher and sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Select Java Edition or Minecraft for Windows, which is the Bedrock Edition.
- Install the edition your account owns, access through Game Pass, or try the available demo or trial.

What do the free versions include?
Java Edition demo
The official Java demo requires a Microsoft account and is offered through the launcher when the account does not own Minecraft. It lasts approximately five in-game days, or about 100 minutes of real-time play. It is limited to single-player Survival. Multiplayer servers and commands are unavailable. LAN play is possible only with restrictions, including a limit of one demo account in the LAN game. See the official Java demo details.

Bedrock Edition free trial
The Bedrock trial, labeled Minecraft for Windows in the launcher, lasts approximately 90 minutes, or four and a half in-game days. It is single-player Survival only: commands, multiplayer, and Realms are unavailable. Trial availability can vary by platform and region, so the option may not appear for every account. Neither option is an unlimited free version of Minecraft, and neither trial provides the normal multiplayer experience.

No. Installing or upgrading to Windows 11 does not grant a Minecraft license. You need a purchased PC license, an eligible PC Game Pass or Ultimate subscription, or access to an official demo or trial.

The standard Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC package includes both Java Edition and Minecraft for Windows, plus the launcher. The license is associated with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. If that account owns the current PC bundle, both editions should appear in the launcher. A console or mobile purchase should not automatically be treated as a Windows PC license.

Bedrock supports cross-platform play across Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and mobile. Java cross-play is between Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Java and Bedrock worlds are not automatically interchangeable, and installing both does not let a Bedrock player join any Java server.

Buy Minecraft or use PC Game Pass?
Buy the PC bundle for permanent access
Buying the standard PC bundle is the clearest choice if you expect to play for months or years and want both editions without recurring payments. The U.S. Xbox listing showed the standard package at $29.99 or more on August 16, 2026. Prices vary by region, tax, promotion, and storefront updates, so confirm the live price before buying: Xbox Minecraft PC listing.
The Deluxe and Ultimate Collections cost more because they add cosmetic, Marketplace, add-on, or Minecoin content. They are only worth considering if you specifically want those extras; they do not make the core game free.
Use PC Game Pass if you want a lower upfront cost
Xbox currently lists Minecraft as included with PC Game Pass. This is access through a paid subscription, not permanent ownership. Access continues only while the qualifying subscription is active and while the title remains in the applicable catalog. Plans, prices, regions, and catalog availability can change.

Windows 11 requirements
Windows 11 compatibility alone does not guarantee smooth performance. Results depend on the processor, graphics hardware, memory, resolution, render distance, shaders, mods, and other settings.
- Bedrock: the product requirements list Windows 10 version 19041.0 or higher, 4 GB minimum memory, and 8 GB recommended memory. Example minimum graphics include Intel HD Graphics 4000 or AMD Radeon R5; recommended examples include NVIDIA GeForce 940M or AMD Radeon HD 8570D.
- Java: the official requirements list 8 GB minimum memory with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics, and 16 GB recommended memory. The recommended operating-system entry includes 64-bit Windows 11.
Check the official PC product requirements and Java Edition system requirements before purchasing. Requirements can change as the game is updated.
Why does Minecraft still say “Buy Now”?
You downloaded the launcher but have no entitlement
This is expected if the signed-in account owns neither the game nor an active Game Pass entitlement. Confirm the account, then use the available demo or trial, purchase the PC bundle, or check your subscription.
You bought Minecraft but the launcher does not recognize it
- Find the original purchase receipt.
- Identify the Microsoft account attached to that purchase.
- Sign out of the launcher and sign back in with that account.
- Check that the Microsoft Store and Xbox app are using the same account.
- Do not buy the game again until ownership is confirmed.
Other possibilities include using a child or family account instead of the purchasing account, buying on another platform, or encountering a Microsoft Store licensing or cache problem. Microsoft’s account and PC purchase guidance explains the licensing relationship.
The free trial does not allow multiplayer
That is a restriction, not necessarily a fault. Java’s demo blocks multiplayer servers, while the Bedrock trial blocks multiplayer and Realms. The official trials are not free multiplayer editions.
The launcher installs but the game will not start
Check Windows updates, available disk space, memory and graphics capability, Microsoft Store and Xbox sign-ins, and antivirus or firewall interference. If the problem began after adding mods or shaders, remove them temporarily. The correct fix depends on whether the failure is in the launcher, Store licensing, Java runtime, Bedrock installation, or hardware performance.
Avoid unofficial “free Minecraft” downloads
Do not use cracked launchers, torrents, key generators, pirated copies, or unofficial “full version” installers. They can contain malware, steal Microsoft credentials, corrupt worlds, omit official updates, create multiplayer problems, and violate licensing terms.

Use only Minecraft.net, the Microsoft Store, Xbox, and the official Microsoft sign-in flow. Treat a site as unsafe if it promises the full paid game for free and asks you to disable antivirus protection, run an unknown executable, or enter Microsoft credentials outside an official sign-in page.
