There is no verified, universal item-duplication method established for every Minecraft 1.20 edition and patch. The best-documented Java 1.20.4 issue involving stored items caused them to vanish—not duplicate—and Mojang says it was fixed. Claims of other glitches should be treated as unverified unless demonstrated on your exact edition, patch, and play environment.
Why “Minecraft 1.20” is not specific enough
A dupe claim can depend on whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, the exact patch number, and whether the world is single-player, a Realm, or a multiplayer server. The official release information relevant here is for Java Edition; it does not establish how a method behaves in Bedrock. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes describe the Trails & Tales update, but do not document an item-duplication method.
Before trusting a tutorial, check that it identifies the same edition and exact patch you are running, and that it demonstrates the method in the same kind of world or server. A video title saying “1.20” or “1.20.1” is not proof that a glitch still works on another patch or in multiplayer.
The Java 1.20.4 decorated-pot bug deleted items
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.4 release notes list bug MC-267185: “Decorated pots can delete items when reloading the world.” The Java Team’s December 7, 2023 announcement says the hotfix addressed a critical bug that could cause items to vanish after being stored in a Decorated Pot. This was item loss, not duplication, and Mojang says it was fixed in 1.20.4.

Do not use that bug report as a dupe tutorial. An item disappearing after a reload is the opposite of a reliable way to create extra items.
What the Java 1.20.1 crash report does—and does not—show
A public Mojang bug-tracker report, MC-263749, describes an apparent duplication after a crash in Java 1.20.1. The report is marked “Unconfirmed” and “Duplicate.” Its crash-associated account does not establish a controlled, repeatable technique, so it is not enough to support step-by-step instructions or a promise that it works.

How to judge a claimed dupe method
- Edition: Confirm whether the claim is for Java or Bedrock; do not assume a method transfers between them.
- Exact patch: Look for the full version number, not just “1.20.” A claim for 1.20.1 does not verify compatibility with 1.20.4.
- Play environment: Check whether it was demonstrated in single-player, on a Realm, or on the same kind of server you use. Server rules and behavior can differ.
- Evidence: Prefer a repeatable demonstration on the matching setup over an unconfirmed bug report or a video claim without clear compatibility details.
- Risk: Avoid methods that rely on crashing or corrupting a world. The reports cited here do not establish a safe, dependable way to duplicate items.
A community video claims methods for Java 1.20 and 1.20.1, but that claim does not verify a specific patch’s current behavior or multiplayer compatibility. Treat it as an unverified lead, not a guarantee.

The available evidence does not establish a currently working dupe for your exact setup. For Java, the cited official 1.20.4 issue was about items vanishing from decorated pots and was fixed; the cited 1.20.1 crash report remains unconfirmed. These sources do not settle whether any exploit works in a particular current world or server, and they do not establish a Bedrock method.
