If not, a community-documented Steam Console method may let you request older depot files using their app, depot, and manifest IDs—but it is unofficial, game-specific, and not guaranteed to work. Back up the files and check compatibility before launching an older build.
Check for an official older version first
- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas or Betas—the label can vary.
- If the publisher lists an older or legacy branch, select it and let Steam download the branch’s files.
This is the simplest route, but it works only when the publisher has exposed and retained a branch. Valve documents branch selection through a game’s Properties, and its Steam Support instructions for CS2 beta depots illustrate the process. If no suitable branch appears, Steam does not provide a universal rollback picker for every game.
What the Steam Console method can—and cannot—do
Steam’s content is divided into depots, and a manifest records the files included in a particular depot build. Valve defines a manifest as “a listing of all the files which are included with a depot build, along with metadata for all of the files, including the file size, SHA1 hash, and a set of flags.” A game build may use more than one depot, so downloading one older manifest may not restore the entire game version.
A Steam Community guide describes requesting depot content through the client console. This is community guidance, not a general downgrade procedure documented by Valve. SteamDB also describes restrictions that can affect access to older manifests; seeing a manifest listed in a database does not mean your account can download it. Availability depends on the game and relevant app, depot, manifest, branch, and ownership conditions.

Use the community manifest workflow carefully
- Identify the target version’s content. Find the game’s app ID, the depot or depots needed for the desired version, and the matching manifest ID for each. These IDs differ by game and version; do not copy IDs from an unrelated title.
- Open the Steam Console. Use the URI
steam://nav/consoleto open the console in the Steam client. - Request each required depot. Enter
download_depot <appid> <depotid> <manifestid>, substituting the actual IDs. Repeat for each depot required by the target build. - Wait for Steam to finish. The client should report where it placed the downloaded depot files. If the request fails, the manifest may be inaccessible, the IDs may be wrong, or the game’s depot setup may require a different set of files.
- Preserve a separate copy. Keep the downloaded files apart from the live installation first. If you replace installed files, retain a backup of the current version and the older files you want to preserve.
The command is described in the Steam Community guide to downloading older depot manifests. Its success is not assured: older-manifest access can be restricted, and the correct depot combination is title-specific.
Reduce the chance Steam replaces the older files
Steam Support documents the update preference Only update this game when I launch it. This can help manage when an update is applied, but it does not permanently lock the game to an older build. The Community guide warns that later updates can replace files copied into the game directory. Keep an independent backup if the older files matter, and record which version they represent.

Check compatibility before playing
An older build can have consequences that vary by game. Before launching it, check the publisher’s patch notes or documentation for:
- Whether saves made on a newer version can be opened by the older one.
- Whether required DLC is included or compatible with that build.
- Whether multiplayer requires a matching client and server version.
- Whether mods support the target version.
Because a build can include multiple depots, changing only one depot may leave a mixture of old and current files. The correct set cannot be determined without the game and target version.

Know what update and launch settings do
Update preferences can affect when Steam updates a game; they do not restore an earlier version. Likewise, launch options are not a general downgrade mechanism. Steam’s launch options guide notes that its common options apply to GoldSrc and Source games, not most third-party titles.
For a particular game, the practical choice is therefore either a publisher-provided branch or a carefully researched depot request. If neither is available, Steam’s update controls can help manage future updates but cannot retrieve an older build on their own.
