Sometimes—but sharing access to a game does not always give two people a license to play that same game at once. The answer depends on the platform, how many copies the family owns, whether the game supports multiplayer, and whether you are playing on one console or separate devices.
How family game sharing works
“Family sharing” is not one universal license. Some features let other accounts use games on a designated console; others lend access for a limited period or let family members borrow eligible games from a shared library. Those rules answer who can access a game, not necessarily whether two people can launch the same title simultaneously.

Playing together also requires the game itself to support the kind of multiplayer you want—local, online, or a shared session—and may require compatible devices, controllers, internet access, or a subscription. Check those requirements for the specific game.
What each platform allows
| Platform and feature | What is shared | Can you play the same title together? | Main condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Families | Eligible games in a family library | Yes, up to the number of family-owned copies of that title | Up to six family members; some games are excluded |
| Nintendo Switch 2 GameShare | A supported game shared by a Switch 2 host | Yes, recipients can play together during the GameChat session | Compatible game and systems; access ends with the session |
| Nintendo Virtual Game Cards | A digital game lent to a Nintendo Account family-group member | Not established as a general guarantee of simultaneous same-game play | One game can be lent per account for up to 14 days |
| PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play | Games and media purchased and downloaded by the account holder on the enabled PS5 | The cited Sony guidance does not establish that one purchase supports the same game on two PS5s at once | Enabled on one PS5 at a time |
| Xbox Home Xbox | Digital games, durable add-ons, and some subscription content on the purchaser’s Home Xbox | The licensing rules alone do not guarantee a particular two-console multiplayer setup | Roaming access on a non-Home Xbox requires the purchaser to remain signed in; consumables are not shared |
Steam Families: simultaneous play depends on copies
Steam Families replaced Steam Family Sharing and Family View. A family can have up to six members, and members can access eligible games owned by other family members while keeping their own saves and achievements. For a particular title, the number of people who can play simultaneously is limited by the number of family-owned copies. Valve’s Steam Families FAQ gives the example that buying a second copy of Portal 2 lets any two family members play it at once. Steam Families User Guide & FAQ.

Check whether the game is eligible
Not every game can be shared through Steam Families. Valve lists exclusions that include games requiring a third-party key, account, or subscription; free-to-play games and their purchased DLC; region-restricted games or DLC; games unavailable for a member’s operating system; titles excluded by the publisher; and games marked private by their owner. Check the game’s eligibility in Steam before relying on it for a shared session.
Nintendo Switch: distinguish GameShare from Virtual Game Cards
GameShare is the option for a shared play session
Nintendo says a Switch 2 can use GameShare to share supported games with friends and family who do not own them. The host must have a Switch 2; a compatible Switch 2 or original Switch can receive a shared game. Recipients can play the shared software only during the GameChat session in which it was shared, and access ends when that session ends. Compatible software and systems, internet access, and other terms may apply. Nintendo’s guide says GameChat supports up to 12 voice participants, while up to four people may share a game screen or join video chat at once; these are GameChat feature limits, not a promise that every game supports that many players. Virtual Game Cards are a separate lending feature
Nintendo describes Virtual Game Cards as a way to lend a digital game to a Nintendo Account family-group member for up to 14 days, with one game lent per account. The borrower keeps save data after the loan ends. Nintendo also explains that digital content is tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account and that users on a console where a Virtual Game Card is loaded can play it. These lending and loading rules are not the same as GameShare’s shared GameChat session, and do not establish a blanket right to play one copy of the same game simultaneously on separate systems. Nintendo Account FAQ.
Nintendo also supports local multiplayer on one system for compatible games, sometimes with additional controllers or accessories. Across systems, online or local multiplayer depends on the specific title. Nintendo: Play games across multiple Switch 2 or Switch consoles.

PS5: console access is not a second-console license
When Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play games and media purchased and downloaded by the account holder, including offline, and may receive some PlayStation Plus benefits. Sony allows the setting on one PS5 at a time. This confirms access on the enabled console; it does not establish that one purchase can be played by two accounts on two PS5s simultaneously. PlayStation: Console Sharing and Offline Play.
For remote play together, do not confuse console sharing with Share Play. Share Play streams a session and has its own requirements; it is a different feature from granting another console access to a purchased game.

Xbox: Home console access and roaming access differ
On the purchaser’s Home Xbox, other accounts can access digital games, durable add-ons, and qualifying subscription-enabled content without the purchaser staying signed in. On a non-Home Xbox, another user’s roaming access depends on the purchaser remaining signed in and connected. Consumable add-ons are tied to the account and are not shared. These licensing rules do not by themselves confirm that a particular game can be played together across two consoles; check the game’s multiplayer support and the accounts’ online-service requirements. Microsoft: Product sharing model for games.
Quick Recap
Before setting up a shared game, check these details
- Identify the feature. Confirm whether you mean Steam Families, Switch 2 GameShare, a Virtual Game Card loan, PS5 Console Sharing, or Xbox Home Xbox.
- Count the licenses. For Steam, simultaneous play of one title requires a family-owned copy for each person playing that title. On other platforms, do not assume a shared-library or console-access feature supplies a second simultaneous license.
- Confirm the setup. Note whether both players are on one console or separate systems, and check account sign-in, internet, subscription, and controller requirements for the specific platform and game.
- Verify multiplayer support. Sharing access does not make a single-player game multiplayer. Check whether the title supports local or online play with the other person.
- Check the game’s eligibility and session limits. Steam titles may be excluded from family libraries; Nintendo GameShare requires a supported game and ends with its GameChat session.
