Buying a PlayStation game on disc does not give you a disc-free digital license on PS5. Some eligible PS4 games offer a digital PS5 upgrade, but you must keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play that upgraded version. To play without a disc, you need a separate digital license.
What happens when you upgrade a PS4 disc game?
For some PS4 games, PlayStation offers an upgrade to the digital PS5 version. The offer may be free or paid, and it may only be available for a limited time. An upgrade download does not convert your disc license into digital ownership: PlayStation says you need to keep the disc inserted each time you play the upgraded game. See PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade instructions for the process and terms.

Check whether your game has an offer
- Sign in to your PlayStation account on a PS5 with a disc drive.
- Insert the PS4 game disc and open the game’s hub.
- Select the upgrade offer, if one appears, and review its price and terms before downloading or purchasing it.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play the digital PS5 version.
An internet connection is required for this upgrade process, and the disc’s country or region must match the country or region of your PlayStation account. The offer and its price depend on the specific game; check its Store page while signed in rather than assuming an upgrade is available or free.
Can you use the disc on PS5 Digital Edition?
No. PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 game discs, so it cannot use a disc-based upgrade or play a PS4 game from disc. PlayStation’s FAQ states that Blu-ray discs are not compatible with PS5 Digital Edition; see PS5: The Ultimate FAQ.

#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
What if you want to play without the disc?
If the game offers no eligible disc upgrade, PlayStation’s general upgrade instructions do not provide a way to exchange that physical license for a disc-free digital one. Check the Store for a separate digital version if you want to play without inserting the disc. An eligible digital PS4 game may have its own PS5 upgrade offer, including on PS5 Digital Edition, but that is a digital-to-digital upgrade route—not a conversion of disc ownership.
