Can You Get DLSS 3 Frame Generation on RTX 20/30? The Modding Workaround Explained

RTX 20- and 30-series GPUs cannot run native DLSS Frame Generation, but compatible single-player games may use FSR 3 or 3.1 through a DLL replacement. Here is how it works, what you need, and the risks.

Native DLSS 3 Frame Generation cannot be unlocked on RTX 20- or 30-series GPUs. NVIDIA requires RTX 40-series hardware or newer for its native Frame Generation path. The practical workaround is a game-specific DLL replacement that substitutes AMD FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 Frame Generation for the game’s DLSS-G interface. It can improve perceived smoothness in selected single-player games, but it is not native DLSS, is not universal, and carries image-quality, latency, compatibility, and anti-cheat risks.

The short answer

You cannot unlock native NVIDIA DLSS 3 Frame Generation on an RTX 20- or 30-series graphics card. NVIDIA’s native DLSS Frame Generation path requires an RTX 40-series GPU or newer; NVIDIA’s developer material currently identifies DLSS Frame Generation support on GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 GPUs.

What you can do on some older cards is install a compatibility mod that replaces the game’s NVIDIA DLSS-G DLL path with AMD FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 Frame Generation. The game may continue to use DLSS Super Resolution for upscaling, while the mod supplies the generated frames through a different implementation.

That distinction is the whole story: the workaround can make a supported game appear smoother, but it does not turn an RTX 2060, RTX 3060, or RTX 3080 into an RTX 40-series GPU. It does not add Ada Lovelace hardware, restore NVIDIA’s exact native Frame Generation behavior, or guarantee support in every DLSS game.

DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation are separate features

DLSS is a family of technologies, not one switch that provides every DLSS feature on every RTX card.

Feature What it does Older RTX support
DLSS Super Resolution Renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image using AI. Available on RTX 20- and 30-series cards in supported games.
DLSS Frame Generation Creates an additional displayed frame between traditionally rendered frames. Native NVIDIA support requires RTX 40-series hardware or newer.
Reflex and related latency features Coordinates game, driver, and display scheduling to reduce latency in supported titles. Availability and behavior depend on the game, GPU, driver, and implementation.

A game offering DLSS Super Resolution on an RTX 20- or 30-series card does not automatically mean that its DLSS Frame Generation interface can be used on that card. The game must expose a suitable DLSS-G integration, and the replacement mod must be compatible with that title’s rendering pipeline.

NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 announcement introduced Frame Generation with RTX 40-series hardware, and NVIDIA’s integration guidance treats Frame Generation as a separate part of the rendering pipeline. That pipeline depends on information such as motion vectors, camera data, depth information, HUD and UI buffers, swap-chain handling, and latency integration. A mod can intercept a software interface, but it cannot guarantee that every game exposes those inputs in a way that produces clean results.

What the older-GPU workaround actually does

The best-known approach is a drop-in DLL replacement or wrapper. A project such as Nukem9’s dlssg-to-fsr3 replaces the game’s NVIDIA DLSS-G path and supplies AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation instead. Its project documentation lists support for RTX 16-, 20-, and 30-series hardware, but also makes clear that compatibility is title-specific.

In a compatible game, the resulting combination is usually:

  • DLSS Super Resolution: still handled by NVIDIA’s DLSS implementation, if the game supports it on your GPU.
  • Frame Generation: supplied by AMD FSR 3 rather than native NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation.
  • Game integration: still controlled by the host game, its API, its version, and the data available to the replacement.

Another route is DLSS Enabler. Its documentation describes an all-in-one implementation built around a heavily modified FSR 3.1 frame generator, NVIDIA’s open Streamline framework, and an NVAPI emulation layer. Its documented installation path targets DirectX 12 games with native DLSS support. It is a different project and should not be mixed casually with dlssg-to-fsr3, older DLSS Enabler files, LukeFZ files, dummy NVAPI DLLs, or other wrappers.

Neither method is native DLSS 3 Frame Generation. DLSS Enabler also documents that its frame-generation implementation is not NVIDIA’s native Multi-Frame Generation. The exact features, options, and compatibility behavior depend on the project version and the game.

What you need before installing a mod

1. A compatible NVIDIA GPU

The original dlssg-to-fsr3 project documents RTX 16-, 20-, and 30-series support. For this article’s target hardware, that includes cards such as the RTX 2060, RTX 2070, RTX 2080, RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080, subject to the project’s current compatibility notes and the game’s requirements.

Compatibility does not mean that every card in a series works identically. VRAM capacity, driver version, resolution, power limits, and the game’s own GPU requirements can all affect the result. The mod also does not remove the normal requirement that the game run acceptably without frame generation.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

2. A game with the right integration

The mod is not a universal way to add Frame Generation to any game. The title generally needs an existing DLSS implementation and, for the main DLSS-G replacement route, a compatible DLSS Frame Generation integration. A game with only DLSS Super Resolution may not expose the interface that the replacement needs.

Check the project’s compatibility list, release notes, and the game-specific instructions before installing. Compatibility can change after a game patch even when the GPU and driver remain the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. A compatible rendering API

Do not assume that a mod working in one rendering API will work in another. DLSS Enabler’s documented route specifically describes a DirectX 12 game with native DLSS support. Other projects or titles may have different requirements. Use the instructions for the selected project and game rather than copying a DLL recipe from an unrelated title.

4. A clean installation

DLL wrappers operate in a sensitive loading path. Before copying anything, remove incompatible or older versions of:

  • Earlier DLSS Enabler files.
  • LukeFZ files.
  • Dummy NVAPI DLLs.
  • Other DLSS, FSR, frame-generation, or graphics API proxy files.

Two tools attempting to answer the same DLL request can cause a missing option, an immediate crash, broken overlays, or inconsistent behavior. DLSS Enabler’s documentation specifically warns about conflicts with competing files.

5. A reversible installation

Record the game version, back up the game directory or at least the files you intend to replace, and know how to verify the platform’s files. Steam, Epic Games Store, and other launchers provide file-verification or repair functions, although the exact menu labels vary by platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

General installation workflow

The following is a safe, project-neutral outline. Do not treat it as a universal list of filenames: the correct proxy DLL name can vary by game loader, and release packages change over time.

  1. Confirm the title and API. Verify that the game already supports DLSS and that the selected project lists the game or a compatible integration. For DLSS Enabler, confirm that the documented DirectX 12 and native-DLSS requirements apply.
  2. Check the game version. Read the mod’s release notes and compatibility section for the current version of the game. A DLL that worked before a patch may stop working afterward.
  3. Choose one project. Use the documented release of dlssg-to-fsr3, DLSS Enabler, or another specifically supported replacement. Do not combine installation instructions from multiple projects.
  4. Download from a trusted project or established mod distribution. Avoid arbitrary DLL mirrors and repacked archives from unknown uploaders. Verify that the files match the project’s published documentation.
  5. Remove conflicting files. Uninstall or delete older wrappers, dummy NVAPI files, and competing frame-generation injectors before installing the chosen version.
  6. Find the correct game directory. Copy files beside the game executable or into the location specified by the project. The directory is not always the top-level installation folder.
  7. Use the recommended proxy name. The project may document more than one proxy-DLL filename because games do not all load the same interface. Use the name recommended for that title instead of assuming one filename works everywhere.
  8. Launch and inspect the log. Nukem9’s project documents a log file created in the game directory at launch. Look for initialization errors, missing dependencies, unsupported paths, or evidence that another wrapper loaded first.
  9. Enable the game’s settings. If the replacement works, enable DLSS Super Resolution and the Frame Generation option using the labels exposed by that game or mod. Some titles may require a restart after changing the option.
  10. Test before judging it. Use a repeatable single-player scene with camera movement, foliage, particles, transparency, HUD elements, and fast traversal. Compare the same resolution, quality mode, and graphics settings with the mod disabled and enabled.

Do not delete the original game files permanently unless the project specifically instructs you to. If the game stops launching, remove the replacement files and restore the originals or run the launcher’s repair process.

How to tell whether it actually helped

Frame-generation mods make the displayed image cadence look smoother by inserting generated frames. They do not make the underlying game simulation or base rendering complete twice as quickly.

  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Track these separately:

  • Rendered FPS: the rate at which the game produces fully rendered frames.
  • Displayed or presented FPS: the number that may include generated frames.
  • Frame-time consistency: whether motion is smooth or interrupted by spikes and stutter.
  • Input latency: how quickly a control appears on screen.
  • Image quality: whether the generated frames contain ghosting, flicker, or unstable UI elements.

A higher displayed FPS is not equivalent to the same increase in rendered performance. The game may still be CPU-limited, shader-compilation-limited, or constrained by its original rendering workload. Frame generation cannot remove those bottlenecks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most sensible starting point is a stable, playable base frame rate, rather than enabling the mod solely to produce a large on-screen FPS number. A frame limiter can help maintain consistent pacing, but the correct limit depends on the game, display refresh rate, driver behavior, and the particular mod. DLSS Enabler documents frame-limiting and dynamic frame-generation controls; those controls should not be assumed to exist in every replacement project.

Common image-quality problems

FSR 3 Frame Generation is not identical to NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation. Different implementations can behave differently in areas where the renderer has incomplete or rapidly changing information.

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Ghosting behind characters or objects Motion-vector limitations, disocclusion, or a difficult camera path. Test another scene, reduce motion-related settings if available, compare with the mod disabled, and check for a title-specific fix.
HUD doubling or instability The UI is being included in the frame-generation input or is not being handled correctly. Check whether the project documents a UI option or game-specific workaround. If not, disable frame generation for that title.
Flickering foliage, particles, or transparency Rapidly changing or transparent elements are difficult for interpolation. Compare several locations and camera speeds. A different quality setting may reduce the artifact, but the mod may simply be unsuitable for that game.
Smooth camera motion but delayed controls Generated frames do not make input arrive at the same cadence as fully rendered frames. Keep the base frame rate stable, avoid chasing an inflated displayed FPS, and disable the feature if latency is more objectionable than the visual smoothness is useful.
Stutter despite a high displayed FPS Base frame-time spikes, CPU limits, shader compilation, or wrapper overhead. Compare base frame times with frame generation disabled and use a limiter or lower settings that address the actual bottleneck.

What the mod cannot restore

A replacement can satisfy enough of the game’s frame-generation interface to function, but it does not reproduce every part of NVIDIA’s native implementation. Do not assume it restores:

  • The exact behavior of native NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation.
  • All NVIDIA Reflex integration or driver-level latency handling.
  • Identical HUD, particle, transparency, and disocclusion treatment.
  • NVIDIA App reporting or native driver integration.
  • Support in every game that advertises DLSS 3.
  • NVIDIA’s newer Multi-Frame Generation features on RTX 50-series hardware.

This is why a replacement can look impressive in one supported title and produce distracting artifacts or no usable result in another. Production-quality frame generation relies on correctly supplied motion vectors, camera data, UI buffers, swap-chain behavior, and latency coordination. The wrapper has to work with whatever the game exposes.

Troubleshooting guide

The Frame Generation option does not appear

  • Confirm that the game has native DLSS support rather than only another upscaler.
  • Check whether the game must support DLSS-G specifically.
  • Make sure the replacement files are beside the correct executable.
  • Try the proxy-DLL name documented for that title.
  • Remove competing wrappers and dummy NVAPI files.
  • Read the launch log for an initialization or unsupported-path error.
  • Confirm that the mod supports the installed game version and rendering API.

The game crashes at startup

  • Remove the replacement files and launch the unmodified game.
  • Restore any backed-up originals or use the platform’s file-verification tool.
  • Remove older DLSS Enabler, LukeFZ, or other proxy files.
  • Check the project’s issue tracker or compatibility notes for a version-specific conflict.
  • Do not add random replacement DLLs from an unrelated mod package.

The game launches but performance is worse

Disable frame generation and compare the underlying rendered frame rate and frame times. A CPU bottleneck, shader compilation, unstable base frame rate, or wrapper conflict can outweigh any benefit from generated frames. If the game is already struggling to produce consistent real frames, the mod may make the counter look better without making interaction feel better.

The game updates and stops working

Remove the mod before troubleshooting the patched game. Verify the files, launch the unmodified version once, then check whether the project has released an update or a new title-specific instruction. Do not assume that copying the old files back after every patch is safe.

Antivirus software flags a DLL

DLL injection and proxy behavior can trigger antivirus warnings even when a file comes from a legitimate project. That is not proof that every flagged file is malicious, but it is a reason to verify the download source and inspect the project documentation. Do not blindly whitelist a repacked binary from an unknown site. If the warning cannot be resolved confidently, do not install the mod.

Multiplayer and anti-cheat warning

Do not use these modifications in competitive or anti-cheat-protected multiplayer games unless the developer and the mod documentation explicitly establish that the modification is permitted. Nukem9’s documentation describes multiplayer use as ill-advised and warns that it may lead to account bans. DLSS Enabler likewise warns that anti-cheat software can treat frame-generation injection as a cheat attempt.

  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

The safest use case is an offline or single-player title, installed only after checking its rules and the current mod notes. A mod’s purpose being graphical does not guarantee that an anti-cheat system will distinguish it from other forms of DLL injection.

Is it better to mod an older card or upgrade?

For someone who already owns an RTX 20- or 30-series card, trying a compatible single-player mod can be a reasonable way to experiment without buying new hardware. It is not a substitute for the broader support and integration available on an RTX 40-series or newer GPU.

If you are comparing hardware rather than looking for a required component, an GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card is an example of the RTX 30-series class discussed here. Exact models, stock, seller reliability, and pricing change constantly, so treat it as hardware context rather than a recommendation or a requirement for the mod. The mod project’s documented support, the game’s compatibility list, and your own base frame rate matter more than the model name alone.

Upgrade considerations are straightforward:

  • Keep the older card and mod: lowest immediate cost, but compatibility and image quality vary by title.
  • Keep the older card without frame generation: the most predictable behavior, but you receive only the native features supported by the card and game.
  • Move to RTX 40 or newer: enables NVIDIA’s native Frame Generation path in supported games, but involves the cost, power requirements, and availability of a new GPU.

Verdict

Older RTX cards cannot be given native DLSS 3 Frame Generation through software. They can, however, run a different frame-generation implementation in some compatible games by using a DLL replacement or wrapper that substitutes AMD FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 for the game’s DLSS-G path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That workaround is worth considering for supported single-player titles when the base frame rate is already stable and the user is willing to test for artifacts, latency, crashes, and update-related breakage. It is not universal, it is not native DLSS, and it should not be used casually in multiplayer. Always verify the exact game, version, API, project release, proxy filename, and compatibility notes before copying files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can RTX 20- and 30-series cards run native DLSS 3 Frame Generation?

No. NVIDIA’s native DLSS Frame Generation path requires an RTX 40-series GPU or newer. A mod can replace the DLSS-G interface with FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 Frame Generation, but it does not add the hardware or behavior of native DLSS Frame Generation.

Will the mod work in every game that supports DLSS?

Not necessarily. The game generally needs native DLSS support and a compatible DLSS-G integration, and the project must support the game’s version and rendering API. DLSS Super Resolution support alone is not enough.

Does FSR 3 Frame Generation provide the same performance and quality as DLSS Frame Generation?

No. Generated frames can make motion appear smoother, but they do not increase the rate at which the game produces fully rendered frames. They can also add latency or show ghosting, flicker, HUD problems, and stutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to use a DLSS-to-FSR frame-generation mod online?

Use it only in single-player or offline games unless the game developer and mod documentation clearly permit it. DLL injection may trigger anti-cheat systems, and the projects warn that multiplayer use can result in bans.

What should I do if the game crashes after installing the mod?

Remove the replacement files, restore the originals or verify the game files, remove competing wrappers, and check the project’s compatibility notes for the current game version. A game update may require a newer mod release or make the title incompatible.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: RTX 20- and 30-series cards cannot run native NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation, but selected single-player games can use a DLL-based FSR 3 or FSR 3.1 replacement. Expect title-specific results, possible artifacts and latency, and meaningful anti-cheat risk.
