Yes. To hide smoke while keeping a Minecraft campfire lit, place a trapdoor above it and close it. To stop the smoke by putting the fire out, use a shovel on the campfire; you can relight it later.
Hide smoke without extinguishing the campfire
- Place a trapdoor above the campfire.
- Close the trapdoor to block the smoke. Open it again when you want the smoke to rise.
Minecraft’s guide says a trapdoor blocks all smoke until it opens again. It can also be redstone-controlled. Minecraft’s “Taking Inventory: Campfire,” published March 19, 2020, describes this method.
Stop the smoke by putting out the fire
Use a shovel on the campfire to extinguish it. The campfire can be lit again when you need it. This removes the smoke by stopping the fire rather than hiding the smoke from a lit campfire. Minecraft’s guide describes the shovel method.
What a hay bale does
A hay bale beneath a campfire increases the smoke’s reported rise from about 10 blocks to 24 blocks, making it useful for a taller signal—not for hiding smoke. These are the gameplay figures in Minecraft’s 2020 guide, not independently tested measurements. Source: Minecraft, “Taking Inventory: Campfire,” March 19, 2020.

Edition and version note
The cited Minecraft guide does not say whether these instructions differ between Java and Bedrock editions or across current game versions. A 2019 Java Edition snapshot announcement describes campfires as lightable and unlightable, but that historical note does not establish behavior in every current edition.
