No—not as a permanent transfer. A digital Nintendo Switch game stays with the Nintendo Account that bought it, and Nintendo says you cannot transfer a digital purchase to another account. You can share access in limited ways: load its Virtual Game Card on a console other people use, lend an eligible Virtual Game Card temporarily to someone in your Nintendo Account family group, or give the recipient a physical game card instead.

Can you transfer a digital Switch game to someone else’s account?

No. Nintendo says digital games and downloadable content cannot be transferred from one Nintendo Account to another. The purchase remains tied to the account that bought it, so choose the intended account before purchasing.

That means a game already bought on your account cannot become a permanent digital game on a friend’s or family member’s account. Sharing access does not change who owns the digital purchase.

See Nintendo’s transfer guidance.

Ways someone else can play your digital game

Load the Virtual Game Card on a shared console

If you share a console, load the game’s Virtual Game Card on that system. Other users on that console can play the game, but the purchase remains associated with the account that bought it. This is console access, not a transfer to another person’s account. Nintendo’s digital purchase instructions explain access across consoles.

Lend an eligible Virtual Game Card temporarily

You can lend an eligible Virtual Game Card to someone in your Nintendo Account family group. The consoles must be near each other and online to lend or borrow. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide, checked October 8, 2026, says a lender can have up to three loans out at a time, while each borrower can borrow one game at a time. A loan returns automatically after 14 days. Some games may not support lending, and the lender cannot play that Virtual Game Card while it is lent.

Because lending is temporary, it does not give the borrower a game to keep. Check Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide for the current lending steps and eligibility details.

Transfer the digital purchase No; Nintendo does not allow transfers between Nintendo Accounts. The purchasing account retains the game. Not applicable. Not applicable.

No family-group requirement or time limit is stated for this shared-console access in the cited guidance. Not stated for this specific shared-console arrangement in the cited guidance.
Lend a Virtual Game Card No; the borrower gets temporary access. An eligible borrower in the lender’s Nintendo Account family group. Consoles must be near each other and online to lend or borrow; automatic return after 14 days. A lender can have three loans out, and a borrower can hold one loan at a time. No. Nintendo says the lender cannot play the card while it is lent.
Give a physical game card The recipient can play using their own console and account; the physical card is not a digital purchase transferred to their account. Whoever has the card inserted in the console they want to play on. No Nintendo Account family-group or lending period is stated for using the physical card. The card must be available to the person playing it.

If you want the recipient to keep a game

Nintendo does not provide a way to move a digital purchase you already own onto another account. The clearest option is to give the recipient a physical Nintendo Switch game card. Nintendo’s instructions for playing games across consoles say to insert the physical game card into the console where the recipient wants to play.

If the recipient wants a digital copy, they need to make the purchase through their own Nintendo Account. A gift card may be another route for them to choose and buy a game themselves, but availability and terms depend on the region and listing; the cited Nintendo pages do not establish current gift-card availability.

Do save data and game access transfer together?

No. Save data is separate from the game purchase and is associated with the Nintendo Account and console, not the physical game card. Transferring or sharing access to a game does not, by itself, move the purchaser’s save data. Nintendo describes save-data transfer and Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup as options for using supported saves on another console; see its multiple-console guidance.
